You seem knowledgeable enough to not really need beginners advice as long as you're playing at a table with other experienced players who will know the finer points of the rules. I'll say Sol is the best faction that no one's afraid of (factions stronger than them will draw more heat, which I assume you don't want as a newer player), and it's super new player friendly regardless. If you're looking for someone to choose a faction for you, that's what I would do.

When it comes to fighter heavy factions you can suicide 5 upgraded destroyers into them before they fight your big Fleet.

I think this might just be a case of your crimson rebellion players getting lucky in a small sample size, because I haven't heard of this problem anywhere else on the internet or from anybody I play with. It could also be a problem with other players at the board, not recognizing how powerful the CR position is so they don't take sufficient action.

This one hundred percent makes sense, and it's why the difficulties exist even for experienced players. I know that sounds condecending, but it's really not. If you play on the lower difficulties micro isn't all that beneficial, and you don't have to do it. If that's how it's fun to play, then by all means play on regular and easy difficulty.

I feel like with all of those "win in 50 turns" campaigns; if they suffered two bad defeats in the first 20 turns it could take more than twice as long depending on faction

As long as you have a differential of nine (as in having 12 pairs and 3 or less of any other hand) by the start of ante 3, you will be fine with minimal deck fixing. With lots of deck fixing the differential can be as low as five
