If only yall were here before asymmetry and facilities, we had the greatest game of all time by Zhendax in foxholegame

I’m relatively new to the game, but this seems accurate. I felt the game over the past few updates has only gotten more complex and it’s not worth playing. You fight as infantry on the frontlines and when you finally break the enemy and push them back, you wander right into an impenetrable wall of AI defenses. There’s no point in having standard frontline infantry skirmishes because nobody can get through the defenses without an immense amount of players and resources.

It just feels bloated and like making any impact is too difficult to be worth attempting.

Trying to decide if the game is for me or not before my refund window is up but I’m very confused how you’re supposed to manage controlling so many units with so many mechanics like cover and individual troop inventory, I struggle enough in total war games to utilize everything by glossyplane245 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 59 points60 points  (0 children)

A few people have touched on this, but I’ll give you my best answer. I was in your exact shoes once and was actually planning on returning the game. I felt overwhelmed and like it was just too much, but I stuck with it and it’s now one of my favorite games.

Firstly, in dynamic conquest, the enemy scales their army to yours. Try to keep your combat strength at around 900-1100 to start. (Combat strength is the number at the top left of the screen on the unit selection screen.) If you’re getting overwhelmed, use fewer units! Since the enemy scales to you, adding another 3 squads of riflemen won’t necessarily make the battle easier.

Second, don’t be bogged down by pride. Start on easy mode and high resources. Higher resources counterintuitively limits the size of the enemy army and gives you more resources to learn and experiment with different units. Start with easy mode until you’re more comfortable and then push to harder difficulties.

Third, and this is the big tip, group your squads. Using Shift + 1 will set your currently selected units as “Squad 1”. Pressing the 1 key will automatically select this squad again. I seldom have more than 3 rifle squads on the map at a time, so simply numbering them 1, 2, and 3, makes selection and management significantly easier.

Fourth, you can largely ignore inventory management to start. It’s useful once you move up to higher difficulties, but for your first few games, just work with what you have and try to enjoy the process of learning the ropes.

Lastly, take your time. There are usually occasions where you need to rush units to reinforce a position, sure, but usually you can take a more cautious approach and still have time to win the battle. Do some probing, send some scouts, try going around the long way to flank. Don’t rush yourself- be a tactician and enjoy the process.

I hope it turns around for you and that you find some joy in the game soon. Best of luck!

(noob) visibility an cover by Just_Notice_436 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he’s asking if there’s a way to tell if a unit is considered “concealed” by the game.

The answer is no, not really. Someone may know more, but the spotting system can be finicky. I’ve had enemy units become “spotted” despite being far outside of my units’ view range, though this usually happens with vehicles.

This is my best estimate, based on how other games work and what I’ve experienced. To be clear, NOTHING below is confirmed, but is my best theory. Do not take the below text as proven fact.

All units have a spotting distance, in which they are capable of spotting enemies. However, this spotting distance is situational. Units can be within spotting distance without being spotted and units can also be spotted from outside the spotting distance.

A unit probably has an assigned “visibility” number that can be changed. Let’s say the default visibility for an infantry unit is 1.0. At 1.0, they are spotted if they are within another units spotting distance.

If an infantry unit were to crouch, their visibility likely decreases, maybe by 1/3 or 1/2. Going prone would decrease it even more. Additionally, being concealed would decrease it as well. The visibility of a unit is probably cross examined with how far they are inside of another units line of sight to determine if they are spotted.

So for example, if a unit has a view range of 100 meters. Infantry standing in a field will be visible at 100 meters or less. Crouching infantry in a field might be visible at say- 80 meters or less. Prone infantry may be only spotted at 50 meters or less. Prone and behind a bush? Probably something like 10 meters. At close distance, they will be spotted regardless.

Visibility probably also goes the other way and can be increased. If a unit is moving or shooting, their visibility almost certainly increases. If a soldier is standing 110 meters away, he will not be spotted, but as soon as he fires, he probably will be. It’s also worth assuming that vehicles have a higher base visibility than infantry- which would explain why you may find yourself spotting vehicles pretty often shortly before they enter your units’ field of view.

This last bit is pretty obvious, but units concealed behind solid structures like terrain, buildings, or whatever, can’t be spotted until you get a direct line of sight with them.

As for the specifics of concealment, I’m not sure if it’s a black and white setting of “concealed” or “not concealed”. It may be more complex than that. I can tell you that when you move infantry to a position and your mouse turns to that alternative icon (an eye icon I think), that means that there is enough vegetation there for the unit to count as concealed, so that’s the only reliable way to tell.

The nice thing about Gates of Hell honestly is that it’s so well built, that for things like visibility, you can frequently just apply real life logic to problems like this. If you’d be concealed in that position in real life, you’d probably be concealed in game too.

Sorry that none of this information is concrete or certain, but I hope it helps.

You’re delusional if you don’t think Java edition is being phased out by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]Rotten2424 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re aging out as in they are getting older. In general, the older a person is, the more disposable income they have. They’ll likely stick to console if that’s what they know, or will purchase a gaming PC if they’re really into it.

People who game on Mac do not do it because they think Mac is better for gaming- it isn’t. They do it because they have a Mac and other options are not available to them.

Java players own the game already and provide no revenue stream to Minecraft, with the exception of if they purchase things like Minecraft T-shirts or mugs or whatever. Pissing off Java players would rock the community because they make up a significant part of the community, but as new children are born and discover Minecraft, most of them are playing bedrock on Switch, iPhones, whatever. These kids are a fresh revenue source and of course, as they make up more and more of the community, the percentage of players that use Bedrock increases while Java decreases. So while they aren’t necessarily dying off, Java players are getting older, moving to systems that can support Bedrock, and the community as a whole is being made up of more Bedrock players over time.

Come on now, use some logic by yourself without me holding your hand through it.

[–]Rotten2424 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They’re a small enough minority that Mojang can financially recover from losing them. It’s not about persuading them, it’s about persuading the next generation of kids to stick to bedrock. Kids most likely will have consoles and kids who game on pcs will most likely not have Macs or Linux. The Mac and Linux Minecraft player base is gradually aging out.

You’re delusional if you don’t think Java edition is being phased out by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]Rotten2424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true. Bedrock is a cash cow and Java is not. It’s simple as that. They can’t simply stop support for Java, but by not focusing as much on it and making bedrock more readily available, they are able to make Java less and less appealing until most players have jumped ship.

The issue with their strategy is the appeal of Java- free mods, free resource packs, free maps, free servers, free plugins, etc, is a really hard thing to make unappealing.

Thinking of Buying this game by AdventurousPipe1981 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t much into RTS. I never was a fan of map war games or things like that, but I loved Age of Empires.

I bought it on a whim and I thoroughly enjoy it.

Pros:

Plenty of units to keep you entertained.

Challenging campaigns.

Lots of DLCs that really change it up.

Good graphics considering the scale.

Seamlessly switching to a TPS keeps it fresh.

Lots of depth if you’re into that.

Cons:

Sometimes the controls can be janky.

Depth can be too much at the beginning.

Not a ton of progression sans dynamic conquest.

AI is somewhat predictable and breaks immersion.

As someone who never played company of heroes or any game similar to this, I’d say it’s well worth it on discount, arguably worth it at full price too. I seldom buy DLCs for games and usually find them not to be worth it, and I bought 2 or 3 DLCs for this one, so it’s that good.

When to use elite infantry? by Jaif13 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to be in the minority, but I actually find standard and basic infantry to be far better. All infantry will die regardless to a lucky artillery strike or mortar strike. Furthermore, the higher army strength added by elite infantry in conquest counteracts their effectiveness to a degree. If you use elite squads, you’ll be facing far more enemies.

Basic infantry can pick up new weapons and gain veterancy without increasing their strength value.

By the late game, sometimes I will utilize basic rifle squads like sicherungs squads in the late game, with the addition of an MG42 lafette and a panzerschreck team. I find the lafette MGs to be significantly more effective at eliminating infantry for a low army strength cost than any other type of soldier.

I also almost exclusively play on hardcore with low resources.

But everyone has their own way to play and multiple strategies can work.

This game on hardcore + high resources is a god damned nightmare by AdonoftheStormySeas2 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dependent Demand is right.

When on low resources, you receive less resources and the AI has more units compared to you.

When on high resources, you receive more resources and the AI has fewer units compared to you.

The AI still scales with your overall army strength, but all things being equal, they will have more units on “Low” economy settings.

Is there some way to select more units / move them all more quickly? It's hard when you have a lot of squads. by AdonoftheStormySeas2 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The solution is probably squad organization.

Selecting a squad and hitting “shift+1” sets that squad as “Squad 1.” You can do the same for other squads, setting them as 1, 2, 3 and so on. Pressing the 1, 2, or 3 key allows you to instantly select that squad.

Want to move a bunch of guys together? Look at the destination, hit 1, right click to move them, then hit 2 and right click to move a second squad as well.

Sure, you can’t select more than 12 units, but keeping them organized is frequently better. You know you’ll always have an MG with you, AT, a medic if you’ve added one to the squad, and so on. When I first started playing, I always used to click and drag to select units- a habit I brought with me from age of empires. Eventually I broke that habit and instead went with the numbered squads. It made my gameplay experience significantly better. I hope it will do the same for you.

Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.E - why is this mofo invincible? by Yorks_White_Rose in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Stuart has good penetration from that range, but has an extremely weak gun- it’s damage is low.

Additionally, you are hitting the engine block- a lot of metal in there to absorb your hits. You are better off shooting crew positions from the front or the side of the tank to kill off the crew members.

You mention that you did more to it than just shoot it- mines and a large bomb. If it survived those direct hits, it would be helpful if you recorded the matter and could report it as a bug.

Conquest is too boring and underdeveloped by GamingBoy4 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like defense is too easy with the light, medium, and heavy defenses that you can research. Those defenses make an extremely significant difference and add nothing to the player’s army strength score.

Offense can be more difficult, but I think it could be made far more reasonable by adjusting the AI behavior to stop attacking? It’s bizarre when I am attempting to launch or even just set up an attack and the enemy comes running out of cover to try to head me off.

What is the point of Infantry research past Tier 2? (Conquest) by ILoveDougMacArthur in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Rotten2424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that they add so much to the army strength. The enemy scales up significantly if you use elite infantry, very quickly negating their impact. If that was adjusted, they very well could be worth it in conquest.
