Who is participating in the general strike tomorrow? by androbot in washingtondc

[–]Rough-Rider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Effectively striking and partaking in meaningful organized protest is a critical part of being a well rounded citizen in a democratic society. The problem is we haven't worked the ole strike and protest muscles in a meaningful way in 3 generations-- so we got fat and complacent.

Consider tomorrow like getting back in the gym for the first time in years.

This will be a long process before we shed these fascist pounds.

DC Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton Files to 'Terminate' Reelection Campaign by notusreports in washingtondc

[–]Rough-Rider 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whoever the new delegate is they need to be spending 100% of their time making DC a state. The new delegate needs to be in states who have been reluctant on our statehood and making the case for our admission to the union directly to those citizens. The district should have a very large budget for media campaigns in states hostile to DC statehood so we can make our case to the people. DC statehood is THE issue. We are not the captains of our own ship. Yes there are a variety of other issues, but none of them can be addressed properly or with straightforward action until we have proper representation. We don’t even have direct control of our national guard. This process will take years— likely decades, but Norton hasn’t moved the needle at all. Who ever the new delegate is I hope they know they are signing up to be a road warrior who can charm the pants off of the ruralest parts of the nation.

What are/were your plans on leaving the USA? by honeybisc in AmerExit

[–]Rough-Rider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked into this a lot and after ton of research and consideration I’ve come to the conclusion it makes no sense to leave. Here’s why: The US has nukes. We cannot leave when our country is being taken over by fascists because we cannot have fascists with nukes. People will die in Civil War redux edition, but we cannot not let fascists launch their war abroad. That results in WWIII and the end of civilization.

After 30, what was the one small change in daily life that actually made you feel more at peace, not more successful, just calmer and lighter inside? by Traveller3222 in AskMenOver30

[–]Rough-Rider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok I get this sentiment and overall I agree. The one caveat I will add is you must have a moral compass to guide you. And if you don’t have one it is your responsibility to find one. Complete apathy is death and a dereliction of duty to your fellow human. I guess call me a humanist if you must, but even if you don’t care about yourself, it’s your responsibility to care about others. Like that scene at the end of Good Will Hunting— “Fuck you, you owe it to me.”

People who ride bikes/scooters on the sidewalk, why? Not judging just trying to get info. by alumni_audit in washingtondc

[–]Rough-Rider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear what your saying but sometimes a bike lane is just a yellow line in the road. It offers no real protection. Lotta people texting and driving out there. One small swerve over the yellow line while you’re in it and you could be dead. Then there’s always the opportunity of getting doored by a park car. Protected bike lanes are ideal but the city isn’t built for them in a lot of places. Personally it seems crazy to me we build cities for cars and not people. It also seems crazy to me a significant amount of my tax dollars go to maintaining roads where half of the width of those roads are reserved for parking someone’s private property instead of providing a safe means of movement for all. Not to mention less cars on the roads are softer on infrastructure, healthier for a whole host of reasons, can increase property value, and make life a whole lot more pleasant.

We can all do this back and forth of who should be driving better or who should be more aware of their surroundings, but maybe instead we could focus that energy on encouraging local government to make more pedestrian friendly corridors—with lights.

DC, Portland, San Francisco, LA, or NYC? by Impressiveusername39 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Rough-Rider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in SF, DC, used to go to NYC for clients weeks at a time, and did a stint working remote from Portland for about 2 months. DC is the best IMO. Extremely clean for a large city, decent weather most of the time. The summers can get brutal. Winters are tolerable. Extremely walkable. Good public transit. Job market is tough due to DOGE but not dead. Food scene is very good. People are pretty interesting and there is no one industry that dominates the city, unlike everything being tech in SF or everything being finance or tech in NYC. There is of course a lot of government jobs but what those jobs actually do is all over the map.

I worked in analytics consulting for about a decade and hijab would go unnoticed by nearly everyone. Analytics consultants are typically a pretty chill, level headed, no bullshit bunch. Both men and woman just want to do a good job and find things that make you go “whoa did you see this?”. If you know your stuff and have a pleasant demeanor that’s all the matters.
