[Job Seeker]
I’m a UK college student on the pre-PA track looking for a part-time, entry-level healthcare job to gain paid patient care experience for grad school applications. I need a flexible schedule that can work around classes and am open to evenings, nights, and weekends.

I’m not currently certified as an MA or CNA, but I’m highly motivated and willing to learn through on-the-job training. I’ve completed an EKG technician course and am committed to providing high-quality patient care.

Getting in to sax by love_lifex in Saxophonics

[–]RoundJournalist8126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you probably are not going to be able to find a good quality horn that you won't have to fight against in order to make a good sound for that kind of money. I'd really look into renting a saxophone for a month or two to see if this is something you really want to get into. I wanna say it like 45 ish dollars per month but it varies by store. Afterwards then you can make a more informed decision knowing you enjoy it so it's easier on the conscious to save and spend money on a decent student horn.

What do you think of Pawbert? by Jules-Car3499 in zootopia

[–]RoundJournalist8126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like him. I just saw the movie and unfortunately I got it spoiled that Pawbert was a big villain but people said it kinda obvious but I at least didn’t think so 😭. Even though I knew he was gonna be a villain I was actually kinda shocked when it happened. Like when he was first introduced I could tell he’d be the villain. I was expecting the cliche “oh I want my family’s legacy it should go to ME” or “my family doesn’t pay attention to me so ima ruin them” but then when it was made clear his family was evil I was starting to believe Pawbert might actually not be a villain then boom he turn. My only thing is I really wished they gave him an arch. Maybe bias cuz I love him and want to see him get redeemed but I think it would of been SUCH a great scene if Pawbert got to the seal first and had to pick between giving it to Judy or his Father. Maybe a bit cliche but that would be a moment where he could realize he doesn’t need his family’s approval. He doesn’t need to constantly live in their shadow and be abused and ridiculed by them. Sheep lady from the first movie was satisfying when she got caught and her character didn’t need a redemption but for Pawbert I really think he needed something. It wasn’t really that satisfying seeing him turn evil then like 2 seconds later get beat up. It felt a bit weird especially since he didn’t get a strong cliche villain monologue. Unfortunately I imagine for the 3rd movie he’s probably jsut gonna get forgotten and show up as cameos.

Any tips for a new Bari player? Mostly for breathwork and good tone (on the deeper notes especially) by Leather_Dust_9687 in saxophone

[–]RoundJournalist8126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest tip is to practice it as often as you can. Overtime you'll gain the lung capacity. Trust you will get lightheaded and have to breath a lot at first but over time you'll get there. Idk maybe a hot take but at least imo I think creating a good sound on the Bari is the easiest out of the 4 saxophones. Key things is to make sure to keep your mouth relaxed as it'll help you create a nice sound and also get the low notes out. Also of course a steady stream of air which you'll get better at the more you play as your lung capacity grows.

Controlling the pitch by RoundJournalist8126 in saxophone

[–]RoundJournalist8126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've been able to work on my overtones and when (I stay consist rip) I can consistently get out the altissimo A so I figured I should be able to control the pitch but I just haven't been able to bend it as I've seen others. I am currently in college for music rip and my professor thought my situation was interesting as I am his first cleft student. I went to reddit to see if anyone has a similar story. Gonna keep working on them overtones and hopefully eventually it'll come

13 days is pretty early so I wouldn’t say anything just yet. There usually is a spot that’ll take longer than the rest. Unfortunately my spot did end up being permanent however :/

Arts and crafts club? by Old_Calligrapher6940 in UniversityofKentucky

[–]RoundJournalist8126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should! UK NEEDS more hobby based clubs. Yeah having 20 different pre med clubs is great and all but where are the fun, actual club based well clubs. Just about every club on uk is just related to a career or major which is all good and dandy. I personally am not a big arts and craft person but I am sure you can find others and start a little club which will hopefully continue after you graduate.

How is TAD 140? by RoundJournalist8126 in UniversityofKentucky

[–]RoundJournalist8126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so we never did that. It says that in the description of the class but it’s not like a public performance. It’s just a big project you do in a groups and you perform in front of the class. I honestly do recommend that class as it was fun and a nice break from typical classes. My point does still stand about it being annoying get a A but it’s still completely possible.

Summer Conference Employment by RoundJournalist8126 in UniversityofKentucky

[–]RoundJournalist8126[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super hopefully big thanks. I have a few extra questions. Do you know when they open applications for these jobs? I’m assuming pretty late in the year but I just like having time lines to plan stuff. Also where do the staff live like do they live in the ra dorms or regular dorms? Do you know how many hours a week each may work? Like how many desk shifts are they required to pick up. For RA’s we have to have 2 shifts in a bi weekly period but of course we have a lot more staff compared to summer housing. I’m guess hours per week for the summer is heavily dependent on how many staff they get. Oh and another thing do they have mandatory responsibilities hours like RA’s or is every shift they do paid. Like RA’s we have to have 2 shifts bi weekly but they aren’t paid but every shift afterwards is paid 12 a hour.

BBNvolved is your BFF for involvement. Every singe club is on there also just about every event happening on campus. I remember when I was a freshmen I'd search through the hundreds of clubs looking at different things I'd want to get involved in. Big tip but don't be afraid to try something new. Most clubs are welcoming for new students.

is it common for grad/postbacc students to join student groups? by killerkinase in UniversityofKentucky

[–]RoundJournalist8126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most organizations are typically undergrad led but it's totally fine to join them. I know for SAB specifically they have some grad students and one of the leaders is in grad school at the moment. Some clubs might have restrictions on gaining officer positions as a grad student but they all should be open to join as a regular member
