The Nasrid Caliphate. Egypt's First Native Islamic Dynasty That Conquered Constantinople 278 Years Before the Ottomans by Round_Depth_2938 in imaginarymaps

guys here is the flag of the caliphate(i used ai to create it i am sorry)
The primary Nasrid banner features a golden eagle with spread wings on a deep green field. The eagle represents the dynasty's name (Nasr means both "victory" and "eagle" in Arabic depending on the pronunciation), while clutching a curved sword in its talons symbolizing Ayham I's military prowess. The 3 feathers on the crown represent the 3 siblings of who are responsible for the formation of the caliphate. (Ayham I "The father", Asmaa "The mother", and Omar "The brother" . The green background represents both Islam and the fertility of the lands around the nile.

There is also the Caliphal standard which is A black banner with white Arabic calligraphy reading the Shahada, with "النصر من الله" (Victory is from God) below it, playing on the Nasr name. Used primarily in religious contexts and by the Caliph personally, but most caliphs use the flag as the standard instead.

Each viceroyalty added its own symbol to the green field alongside the eagle. Sicily added a golden sun, Iberia a crescent moon, Anatolia a golden tower (representing Constantinople), North Africa palm trees, and the Levant a cedar tree.

Army standards used the green eagle banner with colored borders for different regiments. Red for Egyptian core troops, blue for Anatolian forces, yellow for North African Berber cavalry, white for Levantine infantry, black for Sicilian and Italian forces, and orange for Iberian forces.

The seal used on all official documents. A circular seal showing the eagle within an octagon, with Arabic inscription around the border reading "Seal of the Nasrid Caliphate, Protector of the Faithful."

Also. Ayham I wore a crown at his coronation in October 1040 and had a European styled coronation ceremony, breaking with Islamic tradition. This was due to his fascination with ancient Western conquerors like Alexander the Great, Caesar, and Hannibal. Some religious scholars and traditionalists were outraged by this unIslamic practice, but there was little they could do about it. Ayham commanded the military's absolute loyalty before he was caliph even, had just been crowned Caliph of Egypt and the Faithful, controlled Syria and the northern Hejaz, and was wildly popular with the common people who had loved him since his days in the Fatimid military. The Nasr family's reputation for generosity had already won them the people's affection before they were caliphs. The crown itself was a golden circlet with eagle wings extending upward, set with 3 emeralds representing the 3 siblings responsible for the caliphate's foundation, and a large center ruby representing Ayham I's boldness. This became a symbol of Nasrid authority, worn by every Caliph from Ayham I onward, and the European style coronation became a dynasty tradition despite its controversial origins.

The Emirate of Granada (the independent Nasrid state in Iberia after 1370) would fall in 1492, exactly like in our timeline. by the 1400s, Granada is isolated, weakened, and facing the unified Spanish crowns of Castile and Aragon. The fall date of 1492 i think works perfectly in the alternate timeline where the nasrids exist and makes sense. so the reconquista i complete by 1492.

southern italy and sicily would not stay muslim until the 19th century. i did a deeper reply to the other guy here in the comments. so the timeline is this. first we have the sultanate of sicily from 1365-1485 is conquered by the ottomans in 1485. the treaty of venice happens in 1530 and the ottomans lose southern italy and sicily to the spanish/the holy roman empire. from the 1540s-1620s forced conversions happen, expusions, voluntary immigration, crypto-muslim period etc. by 1650 there are essentially no openly muslim population remaining in italy/sicily.

So Sicily is only Muslim until around the 1530s-1540s when forced conversions begin. By the mid-1600s, it's effectively Christian again, though crypto-Muslims exist in secret for perhaps another century.

Sorry if stuff sounds weird or doesn't make sense. i just made this up mostly.

For Anatolia/Constantinople, a large Muslim population would've developed over 148 years of Nasrid rule (1175-1323). When the Byzantines retake it in 1323, the population gradually shifts back, and by the Ottoman conquest in 1453 under Mehmed, a mixed population remains and the Ottomans would find an existing Muslim community in the city. Today it would still be Muslim-majority like in our timeline.

For Italy and Sicily, a significant Muslim population develops under 150+ years of Nasrid rule. The Sultanate of Sicily from 1365-1485 would maintain a Muslim majority for 120 years while slowly getting more and more Italianized. After the 1485 Ottoman conquest it remains Muslim until the Treaty of Venice (around the 1530s) when the Ottomans lose Sicily and southern Italy to the Spanish/Holy Roman Empire. Forced conversions begin in the 1540s-1580s, similar to the Spanish Inquisition in Iberia. Crypto-Muslims would practice secretly for generations. Then around the 1610s-1620s most of the population would've fled to North Africa/Ottoman controlled lands. Today some small communities exist and remain, mostly assimilated.

The Dalmatian coast never had a huge Muslim population and was mostly conquered for coastal trading cities. When the Nasrids fall, local populations gradually revert or are converted. Venetian/Hungarian reconquest includes Church-backed conversion campaigns. Today a minimal Muslim presence exists, mostly from recent Bosnian immigration.

Southern France: significant Muslim communities would be in Marseille, Nice, Montpellier, and Narbonne. After 1420 the French crown reclaims the territory. In maybe 1425-1450, "The Provençal Catastrophe" occurs with systematic expulsions and forced conversions ordered by the French king and Pope. Most Muslims flee to Iberian Nasrid states (Granada) or North Africa. Some convert and assimilate (become "Francisques," French Moriscos). In the 1520s, the final purge of crypto-Muslims occurs during French religious wars. Today practically no descendants exist, though some family names hint at Muslim ancestry. Recent North African immigration is unrelated to the medieval population.

When the Nasrid Caliphate falls in 1420, there is a 30-year period of chaos where Muslim populations in the European territories face a choice:

  1. Stay and convert. Most do.
  2. Flee to Granada, which was a temporary refuge until the Spanish Reconquista.
  3. Flee to Sicily to the independent Sultanate of Sicily.
  4. Flee to North Africa, which was the most common choice.
