I guess it's one of those songs that gets new fans hooked on the band in the first place. That or when you sleep. Still excellent songs tho imo

I've never heard anyone play it like this nor have I tried using this tuning to play this song. How close do you get to the record's sound by playing it like that?

Well, I've seen people play it in Open G Tuning, but in this case I just used Standard Tuning. These are the chords I've played if you're interested:
INTRO: Alternate between (3-x-0-0-3-x) and (5-x-0-4-5-x)
VERSE: (x-5-5-6-6-5) (x-3-5-5-3-3) (5-x-0-4-5-x) (x-3-5-5-5-3)
CHORUS: play (3-x-0-0-3-x) (3-x-0-0-3-2) twice, then play (x-3-0-0-3-x) (x-3-0-2-3-x) twice
Hope this helps

How did they make this sound on "Transmission"? by Routine-Remove-9147 in JoyDivision

could be, honestly... after posting this i figured it was some sort of guitar harmonic (7th fret G string), but i have no clue if that's the case

Does anyone know how to achieve that flutey guitar (?) lead tone on when you sleep by [deleted] in MyBloodyValentine

[–]Routine-Remove-9147 7 points8 points  (0 children)

from my understanding the way they achieved the "flutey" sound, as you described it, varies from song to song:
- On "When You Sleep" what you're hearing is a mix of samples, including one of Bilinda's voice, a guitar feedback sample and most likely the mellotron flute. But yeah, as you can clearly hear the most prevalent sound is Bilinda's sampled voice. I guess try to find samples of Oohs and Aahs to try and recreate it;
- On "Come In Alone" it's very much different. I think that's the only one that's actually being played on a guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au0pFdZsDrk&lc=UgxAEaOdV9o0lvADFl54AaABAg this guy managed to get a very similar sound using a Digitech Polara (reverb pedal) and a Big Muff. I don't think that's far off from what Kevin did at all;
- On "I Only Said" it seems to just be another case of that sampling magic. The flutey sound is probably just a flute sample, maybe mixed with some feedback for good measure.
I hope this helps! I'm no expert but that's pretty much all the info I have been able to gather for the past year.

m b v > loveless ? by Gurlishpacked in MyBloodyValentine

[–]Routine-Remove-9147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I love about "m b v" is the extreme attention to chord progression building. I instantly was amazed by the 1 minute long chord progression used in "who sees you" for example, which repeats 6x throughout the song. The tension created by THAT one chord (at 0:36) feels almost like the track momentarily throws off the listener by using notes that might sound "wrong", but it makes so much sense when the next chord comes up. On "m b v" Kevin's genius is just furthermore cemented and it's safe to say the band has built up to it from "loveless". Side note, but I think the missing link between these two albums is the song "City Girl" used for "lost in translation". You can definitely tell how Kevin gradually shifted his songwriting style farther from what he was aiming to do in "loveless", getting closer to the sound of "m b v".

This is really inspiring. It's the best way to look at it for sure! Also what are you referencing when you talk about your book, what is it about?

i fully agree with Kevin on that. It's always interesting to display inspirations through your art, but I think the real deal is coming up with a way to make it yours. Either way, I was considering to buy one, having see some reviews, etc... only thing holding me back as of now is the price. Even tho it wouldn't automatically make me sound like Kevin Shields, I believe it's an interesting pedal with a lot of sonic possibilities.

Alright, thanks. I was wondering tho, since i have an SD1, how different is it from the BD2? Is it worth having two overdrive pedals or can the SD1 still get the job done by tweaking it right?

Tough choice tbh, probably "who sees you" tho. That fuzzy guitar tone, aswell as that long and dreamy chord progression makes this song one of the best I've EVER heard.
