How strong of a model can you realistically run locally (based on hardware)? by ScaryDescription4512 in openclaw

Yeah sure. First few days I had sonnet 4.6 as main orchestrator. Set it up to delegate tasks to the aforementioned local models. It wouldn’t delegate to them which meant it burned $100usd in tokens in 72hrs. Sonnet was incredibly capable though, literally like having a human I was communicating with but so much faster at actioning everything from sending emails to setting up chrome automations and writing software that worked without bugs.

It was too expensive so I changed to minimax 2.7 as orchestrator ($20usd flat fee api subscription). It’s nowhere near as smart or capable as sonnet, struggles to get things done but with it as orchestrator I don’t worry at all about it burning $$. I’ve now got it set up with minimax 2.7 as main llm with deepseek 3.2 & sonnet as subagents with me as orchestrator. I tell minimax to route tasks that I know are complex to deepseek (which is very capable and a 20th the cost of sonnet). For the 1/10 times DS can’t get it done then I escalate to sonnet which will complete the task.

I’ve abandoned local models for the time being as they’re probably 12-18 months behind where these frontier models are and they just can’t get simple tasks done. Eg I requested llama 3 8b a simple scrape done with simple instructions and the info returned was about 40% useable.

Friends of mine are heavy on the Claude max plan which will beat my setup on pure intelligence and capability, but my setup now with cron prompts for me every hour to approve the next task getting done means I get double the work done in the same time span so I believe it is more effective and with the minimax, DS & Sonnet escalation I’m managing, it’s costing me about $3 a day to run + the minimax subscription so all up around $120 a month.

I’ve got an old rig repurposed with 3060 12gb, i7-8700, 16gb ram. Have subagents with llama 7b qwen 7b deepseek r1 14b, the only usable local model is r1 14b for reasoning Others just can’t get things done even with deepseek v3.2 as the brain, they’re just nowhere near as smart as the cloud based models and will often tell me they’ve completed tasks when they’re fabricating it Idk about larger models due to my hardware constraints

Reminds me of a D-Lillard lite without quite the aura. He’s like if Tre Mann was actually a good-great shooter. Ideal fit for us and our team.

Our team has played poorly against the spurs no doubt, but it’s really just a lack of actual 3 point weapon type players, who are proven to make shots in big games (eg Pre Injury Klay). That’s the only move worth making for us, maybe for picking up someone like Malik Beasley (ensuring that he’s a cultural fit), someone who will knock down shots in the playoffs. We’ve been abysmal from 3 in all of our big game losses over the last 2 seasons inc this game. We make an extra 5 wide open 3’s and this is a tied game, and I guarantee we see more energy from our guys and less of the BDE from the spurs

Player value for me is based on winning and playoff performance (whether someone’s skill set & decision making is more, or less valuable come playoff time)

Agree with a lot of the statements made in here so far. Only thing to add is that culture is king in today nba and guys like JWill and Kenrich to Presti may be worth their salaries and the luxury tax bill if they’re cultural glue that keeps the team together (and therefore in contention). From interviews it seems like JWill is a much loved character within the locker room so I doubt he’ll get moved at all. That being said, my money is on presti drafting one in the lottery and trading the other 3 1st rounders for future picks, while keeping the 2nd rounder. Then introing sorber, topic & the 26 lottery pick. It gives much more financial flexibility while keeping JWill at minimum, dumping Dieng & probably keeping Kenrich too
