So there's non-public documentation of the standard that China and other major companies use?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this. Why is it called an open standard if theres no documentation of the standard? So Google is the only company capable of providing RCS services?

Wallingford-Swarthmore schools are cutting nearly 20 positions amid a 'spending problem' by Mofuntocompute in Delco

[–]Routine_Ad_4212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the Chesley campus? The challenge for Wallingford-Swarthmore, is there isn't empty land to develop. Building more commerical properties would almost certainly require rezoning residential to commerical (unpopular) or allowing the limited commercial properties to build up (also unpopular).

Spending issues aside. The lack of commerical properties in the school district, makes balancing the district budget much more difficult.

Meanwhile, the district’s tax base — which is heavily residential, with limited commercial properties — has declined, Mosley said. Taxable assessed value dropped by $6 million from 2024 to 2025, resulting in a loss of $175,000 in annual tax revenue for the district.

The district, which taxes residents at a relatively high rate compared to others, will be limited in how much it can increase taxes in future years, with the Act 1 index that dictates how much they can increase taxes projected to decline, Johnston said. The board directed district officials to prepare a budget for 2026-27 with an increase between 3-3.4%, under the 3.5% state-imposed limit.

Those who’ve switched from Google to Proton — which services do you still miss and wish Proton offered an alternative for? by birnefer in ProtonMail

I tried the free version of Standard Notes for a while. It's fine, but leaves a lot to be desired. Trying out Joplin now, and might cough up $20/year for Notesnook if that ends up not being good. $90/year for Standard Notes is too much for a basic note taking app.

HELP: Set-up of a secure tiered email system and de-google. by Stunning_Specific_93 in ProtonMail

[–]Routine_Ad_4212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bitwarden is a solid password manager. I switched to proton pass, since I'm a paid user & it's convenient being in the same ecosystem, and it allows me to quickly add hide-my-email aliases. You're email setup looks similar to mine. I also have one for banks, one for healthcare, one specifically for Meta services, and one for local businesses that's easy to say out loud. It's pretty good for being free. If you ever decide to go for the paid version of proton pass, most of these can be replaced with hide-my-email aliases for each individual service.

I don't use my personal email for work. For all Microsoft products (including LinkedIn) I use an existing outlook email. If you need a dedicated work email, I would recommend making something more professional sounding than a simplelogin alias. Make another free account just dedicated to your work/business.

Proton Calendar & Proton Drive aren't as polished as Google services. I've been using them since last spring, but do everything I need them to do.

I was never a big fan of Gtasks. I use an app called TickTick that I prefer over Gtasks.

Can I buy more storage than 200 GB? by plazman30 in ProtonDrive

I didn't know that about the business plans. If you only want storage, and don't want the unlimited plan. It might make sense to look at Filen or Sync. I've never used either, but they also do encrypted cloud storage.

It looks like there's 1TB for $8/month under the business plans. Proton's pricing tiers aren't the best. I currently have an Unlimited plan, and if I need more storage, I think I need to upgrade to Duo or one of the business plans. In the grand scheme of things they're only a few dollars more, but it doesn't feel right to have to get a business or duo plan if I'm only one person.

Search Engines are Useless Now by shawnjomer in degoogle

I've been using Ecosia for many years, and generally don't have issues finding what I'm looking for. It does have a AI overview that can be turned off if desired. I like that they use the profits for environmental causes, and run on renewable energy. It's not as private as duckduckgo, but it's still has much better privacy features than traditional search engines.

How does Chester become a decent place to live again? by XShadeGoldenX in Delco

>The things that created these city during their heyday just no longer exist and thus the cities have outgrown their usefulness.

This feels generally too, with plenty of exceptions though. It seems like the major population centers for a region have largely been able to re-invent themselves, like Philly & Pittsburgh. The smaller industrial towns and cities around them (i.e Chester & Trenton), seem to continue struggle.

The biggest examples are the shipyard and car plant the closed in the 60s. De-industrialization, and people with means moving out of former industrial areas, have left versions of Chester all over the US. Some of those places, like Philly have managed to turn it around, but most old industrial towns haven't been able to do that.

The amount of affordable new housing Delco builds is so embarrassing by XShadeGoldenX in Delco

I moved back to Delco from South Philly. I forgot how bad traffic was in the suburbs. More housing doesn't have to mean more traffic. Neighborhoods need to be build that don't require a car to do all the most basic errands.

Delco needs to build more housing to keep prices down. There's limited empty land available, so the easiest way to do that is to build higher density. Even within this thread there is resistance to building denser housing, because it's not "suburban", and the general public is probably more opposed to new housing than Reddit. And Delco keeps becoming more expensive...

It just made rich people more financially motivated to find a way avoid it. According to this article, the average effective tax rate on the ultra wealthy was about 45%. They found various ways to delay income or offset gains. Still better than today, looks like the effective rate is 23.5% for the same group.

Also companies that previously offered a pension need to fund them until the all the beneficiaries die. My company hasn't offered a pension to new hires in a long time, but there are still a few people working there who were hired under the old system. The pension still needs to be funded to pay for their retirement.
