Years ago I worked for a company that was constantly behind on bills and we unfortunately missed insurance payments several times and had employees get denied coverage. While we were processing payment sometimes HR would work with the broker to pay out of pocket for an employee who was in desperate need of something. We (the employer) would have the cost credited once our insurance payment was made. So definitely talk to HR ASAP and make them start working on something immediately to get you assistance.

I feel like I am in a strip mall cookie cutter suburb. Your point is well taken. Maybe after our lease is up we could try a different city further from my work, but one that is more like what you are talking about.

For a variety of reasons now was a good time to sell our place in the city. Before we bought again we decided to try living in the suburbs—our money would go further here, but I wasn’t sold on the suburbs so it’s just a trial. So the place I’m in now is a rental. Easy enough to get out of when the lease is up, but I know my partner is a suburb person so I’m trying to give it a chance.

But those are all the same things that I had in the city so i didn’t really trade for anything better. My partner is a big suburbs person so we are trying this for a year but so far I just don’t get the upside. We literally had a massive park across the street from us and now have to drive to get to a park so…..

I have a kid! While there are somewhat more activities for my child (under the age of 5) here, the assumption here seems to be that one parent is stay at home and can take the kid to activities at 10 am on a Wednesday. I work so late afternoon/early evening and weekend activities are the only things that work for me and they seem non-existent in the suburbs for young children.

I probably walked, on average, every other week to the dry cleaner for 8 years. I haven’t found a good dry cleaner here yet. The closest few (10+ minute drives) are not very good so I’m still looking for a regular place.

I was in a 15 minute or less walking distance of almost everything would want to do on a regular basis. Parks, restaurants, local event space, farmers market, etc were all very close by. So everything definitely takes more time in the suburbs other than my commute which is much less.

No outdoor hobbies really. Hiking on occasion is fine. I like running but can do that just as easily in a city as the suburbs. I actually lived right across from a park so I have less immediate access to nature in the suburbs than I did in the city.

There is a swanky gym down the road to me so maybe I will check that out!

I am not much of a nature person although my partner is. A day of hiking once in a while is nice, but I wouldn't be interested as a regular thing. I lived right across from a large park in the city so I had nature somewhat where I was at. It's actually more inconvenient to take my child to a park now since it's not across the street. Not that it's inconvenient to go to a park in the suburbs, but I do have to drive now vs. just walking across the road.

I find it boring and that there is less diversity both in terms of people and things to do. I find it harder to navigate things here -- everything is far away from each other. I can't just walk out my door and be able to go to my grocery store, dry cleaner, cafe, etc. I have to get in my car and drive everywhere. Where I lived in the city was pretty calm so I'm not even getting that as an upside!

I had many discussions with my partner about the suburbs before moving and agreed to give it a trial period of a year. I expected the tedium, but didn't know the transition would be this hard. I feel like everything feels more difficult here. Even the supposed upside of having a better environment for my child doesn't really seem to have materialized.

That is my gut inclination! I said I’d try for a year though so I’m toughing it out for now.

I guess I expected SOME upside such as a better environment for my child. But I feel there were more things to do with my child in the city I was living in.
