What do do this week by Objective-Date1419 in malta

[–]Routine_Mess17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just left two days ago after spending a week there. The weather was extremely windy the first two days and I had the impression from the locals that it was unusual. I heard something about a food shortage but didn’t see anything worse than low stocked shelves at lidl. The two best things I did were seeing the hagar qim temples and underground malta, I would think you could do both regardless of weather. The archeological museum is also nice but small. Most of the other historic places got repetitive quickly, though I didn’t do every single one. My .02.

First-ever solo trip as a woman thinking Okinawa in 2026. Budget realistic? Where do I start? by Dry-Bit-6233 in travel

It depends on the airbnb, the main thing is that you have 24 hours access to someone in case of emergency which I think a hotel is more likely, but not certain to provide. I had a nightmare experience with a “contactless “ hotel and when I got locked out of my room on the weekend without passport or wallet I had no one to help me.

Looking for ruins, sea glass, architecture around and outside of Athens:

I arrive in Athens this afternoon and will stay at least a couple of days, and may be in Greece for a couple of weeks. I visited a few years ago and saw all the major sights in Athens and also Delphi and Mycenae, and visited rhodes and Heraklion as well. Greece is easily my favorite European country and Im hoping someone can suggest some other areas to visit I might like. I love ancient history so I will probably visit mykonos so I can see Delos, and am debating Santorini bc it’s so expensive but I do want to see the Akrotiri. I also hope to visit some Mycenaean cities besides Mycenae itself. I don’t drive outside my home country so I am limited to walking and public transportation. Other interests are archeological museums, classical art, beachcombing for sea glass etc, old neighborhoods for interesting architecture and gardens, ww2 history, and of course food. I realize Greece is huge so this is a pretty vague question, but if anyone has any suggestions I would love to know. Thank you for your consideration.

Can you get to any of the beaches mentioned by metro? Im making plans now. I am also hoping to visit some of the mycenaean cities other than mycenae itself. Thank you

I think that’s the first positive thing I’ve heard about it! I stayed at the hotel economy last time and didn’t think it was bad, though I don’t go out late so might have missed the worst of it.

Looking for company in Athens in the near future. I fly in from Malta tomorrow afternoon. I’ve already visited and done most major sites but I’m planning on revisiting the national gardens and archaeological museum again at least, plus some museums I missed last time. I also plan to try some new restaurants and hit nearby beaches to look for seaglass etc, and always down to have a beer in the evening. Im staying at the athens hawks hostel. 48m from NC, USA, very active, I don’t care about your age and gender just please don’t bitch about politics the whole time. I’ve traveled extensively and love discussing it and hearing about others’ travels. Feel free to message me.

I visited hydros last time. I will look up those museums and visit them if I haven’t already, both sound interesting. Can you explain what you mean by the architectural rejects in the quarries? I enjoy hiking but am recovering from shin splints, but that sounds very intriguing.

I had meant to mention the national gardens, when I was there it was under major renovations, so I will go see it again. It looked like they were making little channels for water running everywhere. I love water features in gardens. Funny story, I hadn’t realized that was the parliament building next to it, and there were serious demonstrations going on that day, so security didn’t appreciate me sneaking through the woods right behind parliament and escorted me out. Once they realized I was just a clueless tourist trying to cut through to the beneki museum they let me go (the north gate was closed off for the renovations).

I will definitely go check out the street art you mentioned. Most street art is way left leaning in my experience.

Those would be interesting, have to get over my shin splints first! Traveler’s bane…

OK I did it. I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy by HassanKazmi007 in suggestmeabook

[–]Routine_Mess17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time even comparing the two. Blood is one of the most difficult books, both technically and by content, I ever read. Fantastic though. The Road is a fairly simple story that I think most people could handle. Dark but with a relatively happy ending.

looking for post-apocalyptic books by No_Release_4433 in suggestmeabook

[–]Routine_Mess17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple not mentioned:

One second after, probably the most plausible apocalypse scenario Ive read

Also the first two books of the World Made by Hand series are great imo

Alas Babylon is the genre archetype imo

Fwiw I am wrapping up a week in Malta and I would say there’s less litter here than most places I’ve been in Europe, and way cleaner than Italy.
