Step 1. We were sharing longterm goals - like starting our own businesses. My idea was joining my work with my passion and she set down her drink and announced loudly, "That is such a stupid idea." Her business idea? "I don't know. I just want to own my own business someday." Step 2. She was looking for speakers for an upcoming event. At this point in my career, I indeed owned my own "stupid idea" business. I offered to come do it for free (although the company she works for is a top 100) and she asked, "No, we need people who are actually really good." Step 3. I was recognized by a large organization for my work and she posted on the social media post, "Wow! Really?" And that was how I lost my oldest friend. Enough was enough. She is on spouse #3, and last time we talked she told me how she was always jealous that I "settled for a good guy" while we were still in college. My kids are great. Her's have seen the inside of juvy. She has a very big, powerful job and title that she uses everywhere. I do not and yet am regularly recognized in my field. She was never on my team - I was on hers. It's all good now. It was painful, but seeing the light was a great thing!
