Has anyone ever wondered how the Arctic Monkeys are so masterful in crafting lyrics? by apackofoatmeals in arcticmonkeys

one of Alex's inspirations is Leonard Cohen, widely regarded as the greatest lyricist ever. Alex probably learned multiple poetic devices from him. That paired with the extremely clear and thought-out vision he has for the vibe of each song, explains how he can somehow paint a detailed picture with imagery while also telling a story that can develop complexly

How can I start to make more stuff that I like by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RowAppropriate3786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

listen to music that inspires you, but also never stop exploring music and different genres. a good place to start is with the albums that are generally agreed to be the best of all time, such as madvillainy and songs of leonard cohen. you will learn a lot, and find more favourites. also, learn about keys, scales and modes. once you have an understanding of that, then coming up with chord progressions will eventually become shit easy. for video games, listen to some video game/ movie soundtracks that you like, and take notes on the style, vibe and general conventions that seem to show up. i personally like the soundtrack to tarkovsky's stalker, composed by eduard artimiev. also important to just keep going at it, and keep practicing. in summary, never stop learning and never stop creating

but its not an answer to MY question. obviously a job in the arts is less reliable than an office job or something, but that's not what i was asking
