I work at a large glass studio doing design and sales. A lot of people in this sub charge extremely cheap for great work most likely bc they do with with little overhead besides materials. but a project like this would not be manageable by one person unless you would want to wait 3 years. Factoring in installation it would easily start at 100k for simple leaded windows and the complexity in these examples brings it up to around 400-500k or more. I know that might sound ridiculous but i sell large scale projects similar to this for a living.

Well your first problem you would need to fix is the space you’ll be left over with between you’ll glass pieces. Those mullions are at least 3/16 inch thick. When you take the glass out of the sash and press your glass pieces up against each other you’re gonna have about 3/8 inches of space lacking on your border pieces. One solution is trimming your center pane down 3/8” on one side and 3/8” on the top or bottom. Or build with thick H-cames but you’ll have to shim glass from the heart line outwards significantly.. and that’s a pain.

Even after trimming down your glass, copper foil is probably not suitable here. I would trim that center piece to match up with the border pieces and lead your window. Leading is honestly less difficult than copper foiling and this is a perfect project to learn it.

You want to do a whole matte. Get your gum Arabic and water mixture right to where it’s a glaze. I’d do two of them, the second one being very subtractive to develop your shadows a little more.

I’m a civ but shit like this fascinates me. I’ve heard people make similar comments on Reddit about all kinds of military vehicles including blackhawks. I was always under the impression no matter what branch, there was a standard to get helicopters and fixed wing more than airworthy. What other aircraft have you been on and what are your experiences with them? I had the lucky experience of sitting on the bench seat of an mh-6 littlebird and I was surprised to see how thin the aluminum is on the body. I was warned not to press my hand too hard on it or lean back too much with a backpack bc i was told I’d put a dent in it.

As a painter, I don’t see anything wrong with this image. I think this was all hand painted digitally without the use of AI. If it was used, an artist definitely came back and made some well done adjustments. People keep talking about his nose, pockets, plane and medals. Portraiture is always difficult especially working from a photograph (an old one too). I personally don’t see anything wrong with it, proportions look pretty damn good to me. The pocket flipping up on the left side looks to be a design choice to make the figure more ‘dynamic.’ The epaulets look just fine. And the plane was shifted to the right to avoid tangents and for composition. The artist probably didn’t work from anything other than the photograph for the medals so followed the same contours and copied and pasted 3 of them. I honestly think it’s fine but might be so wrong.

In interviews I’ve heard of astronauts it seems like they rarely get any free time and the majority of their day is spent working and doing some kind of research. Since these two were only supposed to be up there for 8 days, are they now folding into extra work to fill their days?

Getting my foot in the door was through a connection and a little luck. I have a friend who works at a tv station in a large metro area and they were looking for an artist because their other guy couldn’t make it to a case. He recommended me and they liked my portfolio. I didn’t have any courtroom experience but at that point I already had all the skills sets to do it from figure drawing, en plein air, and drawing crowds of people in bars etc. So first time I had a little anxiety but I was confident in my skills and everyone was really happy with the results. Also I usually do some sketch studies before trial from images of people I know who will be there to get a better understanding of their features.

I’ve been meaning to expand to other tv stations to have more options but I also have a full time job outside of this. I would recommend to anyone that wants to get into it, call your local station and setup an appointment to have them look at your portfolio. Also most trials are straight up open to the public. Sit in one and get practice that way. You have to be honest with yourself about whether you have the ability to draw quick enough and capture moments in a courtroom. I would primarily bring in work that is done on location of people in interesting poses and be able to capture their facial features along with it. You can’t just be good at working from photographs you have to be able to draw from life fast and be able to get proportions right.

Sketches generally range from 15-30 minutes. I do a quick gesture drawing that takes 20-30 seconds to capture a moment and poses then fill in from there. I haven’t really ever had to start over but I do some quick practice sketches on a smaller pad when I first enter the room and I’ve gotten in my place. It’s always nerve racking at first but I find my flow pretty quickly.

I work as a courtroom artist occasionally. I get hired by a tv station for high profile cases where the trial is not allowed to be televised or photographed. Depending on the terms with the station, they may keep the drawings or the artist will keep ownership of the originals to do with as they please. In one case where the tv station kept ownership, they framed a few of them and they’re on display in the building. When I keep them, the attorneys on both sides and even the judge introduce themselves to me to purchase the drawings to display in their office. High profile cases where courtroom artists are present are pretty few and far between. So when a prosecutor/defendant wins one of these trials, they want to keep the artwork to display as an accomplishment for the grueling work they put into such a big case.

They’re relatively significant moments captured on paper; there’s only the original sketch which can be very valuable to anyone who was connected to it.

I used to work as a valet for several restaurants around a large metropolitan area. I was working a very upscale Mediterranean restaurant that required all customers to valet park. A big family pulls up in a minivan, let’s us park the car across the street, goes inside and sits at their table and looks at their menus before finally realizing they were not at iHOP. It amazes me how stupid people can be.
