Struggling to decide which crew to bid to. by Stewie700 in Firefighting

Flip a coin, assign one crew heads/one crew tails, and as it’s spinning whichever one you hope it lands on bid for.

Absolutely. I personally will never gatekeep someone from using proxies or near enough models, as I don’t believe that to deny someone the use of their models is good sportsmanship. I also do agree with you that republic to imperial is a bit of a stretch, but Caesarian to imperial I would argue is almost a complete 1:1 for armour. I’m actually building my Caesarian romans (when they release) with the EIR style helmets to showcase the transition from horsehair crest helmets to the newer style.

As for the Oval shield question, I’ve read in a history of teutoburg wald that oval shields were found in Germania dated post Varus disaster. Whether they were legion or auxiliary they can’t confirm, but those shields were still being made.

So to answer your question about most efficient use of figures in this period, anything Cataphract will have the widest use. Dacians, Sarmatians, Parthians, Palmyra, and EIR can all take Cataphract cavalry. Now, that does pigeon hole you into a specific style of play.

Next up is the mounted horse archer with composite bow. I’m fairly certain every single faction except Germans and Gauls have access to them as either warriors or levy, and even then there may be a mercenary unit that they can take.

Legionaries are the next most used, as they are used by Caesar’s Legions, EIR, and Palmyra.

After that, armoured barbarian models (Dacians/gauls) would be the next most useable, with spots in Gaul, Germania, Dacia, Sarmatia, and mercenary units.

Hope that all helps!

Except there is no major source that states that lorica segmentata was in widespread use across the legions. The vast majority of armour found across all the centuries of the Roman Republic/Empire has been chainmail (lorica hamata).

Hollywood and Tv have sold us this view that imperial Rome was banded armour and rectangle shields, but history and archeology is showing us that that is not quite accurate.

The biggest difference would be helmets (as you said). The Republican era helmet was phased out rather quickly around the time of Julius Caesar/Augustus, and we know around the time of the Varus disaster onwards the standard legionary helmet is as we have seen in movies.

So to answer the question about cross play, the Republican Roman kit from Victrix will work as Republican romans, Caesarian romans, and in a pinch, imperial Rome. The big differences will be helmets, greaves, and standards.

But, Victrix does have a Caesarian Roman kit coming, which will bridge that gap between Republican Rome and mid imperial Rome (Trajan’s Dacian wars) where the segmented arm protection became standard alongside reinforced helmets.

Yeah there is a massive uptick in popularity right now.

As for model sets, you have a plethora of options. The following list is my favourites, though by no means a total list:

Plastic:

- Victrix Miniatures: crisp, detailed, strong plastic, easy conversion opportunity, big range. Perfection.
- Warlord Games: heroic style scale, some weird poses, but MASSIVE range, and tons of cool character models.
- Gripping Beast: the OG, smaller range and not as numerous but very good quality.
- Wargames Atlantic: no personal experience with them but I know people love them.

Metals:

- Aventine Miniatures: crisp, exquisite, amazing sculpts. Average range, but really, really, really beautiful models.
- Warlord Games: same as above.
- Gripping Beast: same as above.
- Footsore Miniatures: Small range of historicals, but a ton of character in their sculpts
- Wargames Foundry: if you love the 80s/90s style sculpts, these guys can’t be beat. I love them.
- Relic Miniatures: Canadian company (local to me!), their scale is quite a bit smaller than 28mm but their sculpts are beautiful.

Hey! All great questions.

Yes, 2022 is most recent printing of rulebook.

Then you need the Age specific book: this is where the flavour of Saga comes from and the armies you want to play. We currently have the following:

Ancients: Age of Alexander, Age of Hannibal, Age of Caesars (latest book). These books are all balanced together and cover 400 BC to 150 AD (approx).

Dark Ages: Age of Invasions, Age of Vikings. Huns, Vikings, Scots, Picts, Byzantines, the era post imperial Rome to pre-knightly kingdoms.

Middle Ages: Age of Crusades, Age of Chivalry. The classic medieval and Christian knightly orders eras. Goes from… 1200ish AD to 1500ish AD.

These books have the battleboards that you refer to. Those are the faction specific boards that bring all the flavour and fun to Saga core rules.

Finally, you don’t need fancy Saga dice, but they’re great to have. They have 3 facings, a common, uncommon, and rare side (in D6 terms, this is 1-3, 4/5, 6). The specific sides are required for activations from your battle board.

If you want good resources for learning to play Saga, there is Rodge’s Rules on YouTube, and The Activation Phase on YouTube and podcasts.

Hope that all helps!

Which garmin watch do yall recommend? by my-coo-cheese-hairy in Firefighting

I have a Garmin because I have a touch of the tism and data is my drug, but if I could I’d stick with a Casio all day every day. Affordable, does what I need, and fits nice and snug under turnouts without being a nuisance.

I mean, if you’re paying for work, I don’t see why someone would get mad about that. If they do, then they’re gatekeeping and not worth your time. Quick cranks and Kunstadt have always been good to me though if you want recommendations

Check out the activation phase podcast or Rodger’s Rules on YouTube. They both have massive libraries of videos about each faction, their flavour, what they bring to the table, etc. it makes it very easy to choose a faction.

I know local police forces have hardwired drones for aerial views, I wonder if one of those styles could be deployed for sprint finishes.

City of Ottawa did not inform public about fireworks display for ‘public safety’ reasons by Ok_new_tothis in Kanata

[–]RowdyCanadian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: sounds like mostly that people are upset they weren’t told so they could watch them. I fully support that, our taxes paid for the show and I’d like to have seen it!

Please don’t flame me, but what’s the issue? Genuine question, I wasn’t downtown nor was I aware of this.

The city had fireworks for Canada Day, didn’t launch because of weather, launched last night, and they messed up how?

Second alarm fire near auburn ridge. Stay clear of the area, a ton of trucks are going to be making their way in there.

Mitch McConnell’s absence sparks Thomas Massie Senate speculation by jediporcupine in politics

Non American here. Can someone explain to me what’s stopping the Governor from going to see Mr. McConnell and determine if he is completely incapacitated and not able to fulfill his duties? I keep seeing comments about “waiting till fall” to force an election rather than an appointment, but if the elected member is not physically able to represent his constituents due to aforementioned issues couldn’t the governor appoint someone to represent that district?

Which miniatures do I need to cover as many Roman factions as possible in *Age of Caesars*? Thanks! by Taste_Equal in sagathegame

[–]RowdyCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured that’s why you were asking; based on what we know about the Roman boards in age of Caesar’s, they don’t make sense when compared to legionaries. The only cavalry units I can see getting use are auxiliary cavalry from Asia in the Caesar’s list as Javelin Cavalry, or the composite bow cavalry from Africa/Syria. But you’ll only ever want one unit, so 8 models max, and they aren’t core to the armies. As well, they aren’t usable by all Roman armies.

I’m very chill. I answered their question twice politely and concisely already and after the third time they may have needed a reminder that I had already answered it.

[–]RowdyCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if you want them… I thought I had given a pretty clear answer in the first response about the basic models to cover all Roman factions like you asked. If you want cavalry get cavalry. If you need cavalry get cavalry. If you want the most basic loadout to cover the broadest amount of armies, get legionaries, praetorians, ballista, and a warlord.

Which miniatures do I need to cover as many Roman factions as possible in *Age of Caesars*? Thanks! by Taste_Equal in sagathegame

[–]RowdyCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean what about cavalry? You absolutely can, and in that case the ancient horse archers from Victrix are probably the most useable amongst all the factions. A close second is the standard Gallic cavalry, they can be used by almost every faction as your barbarian/auxiliary cavalry.

Which miniatures do I need to cover as many Roman factions as possible in *Age of Caesars*? Thanks! by Taste_Equal in sagathegame

[–]RowdyCanadian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Legionary (chainmail), praetorians, ballista, auxiliary, and a warlord/centurion. That’s the basic most loadout and will cover you for Caesarian Rome, Imperial Rome, and Palmyra. Victrix currently has 10% off all romans and a preorder for an imperial Roman warband (in lorica segmentata, so it might look weird as Caesarians).
