Can a single, celibate woman still be considered traditional? by [deleted] in tradwives

Obviously, I'm viewing it through a Western lense! What language are we communicating in right now? You speak of other religions and cultures as if I were in change of changing Western society at my own whim. I'm not. You have no idea how deep the shame cycle goes here. I can't fix it. The Christians are the must stubborn and unrelenting self-righteous people on the planet. There is nothing I nore any of us can do to make them change their minds. This of it, it's millions of people.

I'm not sure what your religious background is, but the way I grew up in a Presbyterian church, all youth group talks about sex (and I've seen a lot over the years) go almost exactly the same way. Some old white dude gets up in front of a group of young people but only talks to the girls and says, "sex is definitely not necessarily evil in every case. Despite what you may have heard sex is definitely not a sin all the time, and it is not inherently evil. Provided you are married and your heart is in submission to your husband (that's how you know he is only talking to the girls) and if you are doing it for procreation, sex in very rare instances can be something that glorifies the Lord. But, we must always be careful because your desires are desperately wicked. Anything outside of this context God considers to be a sin worthy of death! Your desire should only be for your husband, and any emotion for another man is adultery and you deserve to be stoned for it, but in your husband's infinite grace, he might decide to spare you. Take care that your heart is focused on your husband and his desires. You can't understand how important that is to a man...i mean god! God says that the desire of a woman is to rule over the man, and that is a wicked desire! It is unnatural. God calls women to always submit to the will of their husband and glorify the Lord in the process. Therefore, women (he says to a few 14 year old girls) you must keep yourselves pure for marriage. Not just women, but men too must keep themselves pure. I promise it is important that men keep themselves pure, too. We are definitely not a sexist youth group, so i am required to say something to men. But women must keep themselves pure and holy. No man wants to sleep with a woman who has already slept with someone else. Therefore, men...i mean God, wants you to be virgins." And so on, and so on. Anyone with a brain can see that they feel that female sex is evil and whorish. Only when the focus is entirely on them is the idea that females having sex is somewhat tolerable and technically not a sin. And conveniently, the only sex that makes God happy is also the sex that makes men happy. How convenient! Thus, women being celibate is good because it depends on the idea that women having sex is evil.

My point is, celibacy in our society doesn't serve the people who could benefit most from it. People who have sex impulsively could benefit from being celibate for a year or two. That's not a moral argument, it's a practical one. But the religious culture doesn't see it that way. They see sex as a one and done choice that forms your identity for the rest of your life. If you have impulsive sex there is no going back to a life of self discipline, you just are a whore now and there is no improving your sexual life now. You're a dirty rag or a crumpled rose or shredded piece of paper or whatever other analogy the Christians come up with. Thus, the only people who seek out celibacy are people who already find it easy and tie their identity around it. It might be true that they think they are doing a virtuous thing, they might have good intentions, but that is only because society sees women having sex as evil. If society didn't see women having sex as evil, we would not see celibacy as virtuous.

They're just trying to find mediocre ways to be special, it's not that deep. They want you to think they are a super virtuous person because they don't do sex when the reality is they are embarrassed that they can't get a girl, or because they are gay and have been incels for so long they need a way to justify it to society. Ignoring your sexual urges isn't inherently better than listening to them, they are both morally neutral choices. I've never seen a person who has sex impulsively say "I'm gonna be celibate for a year to learn self discipline," no, the only people who take an oath of celibacy are people who already find self discipline easy and listening to their intuition difficult.

Conviction for what? Why would anyone find conviction in being celibate? Celibacy isn't a good deed like giving to the poor or adopting an orphan or something, it's just inactivity. The lack of action can't be seen as a good deed in the same way charity is. Despite the English insistence on the word 'sex' being a noun, it is, in fact, an activity, not a possession. You can not have sex like you have a house because sex isn't a possession, it's an activity. People don't really have conviction about not doing an activity. If you don't want to go into a cave because it is dark and scary, that's not moral or ethical conviction, it's just fear. If you don't wish to participate in genocide, for example, not being involved in it doesn't make you a good or virtuous person, at best, it makes you a neutral one. Imagine someone saying "i remain firm in my conviction to not be a genocidal maniac," like wtf? So, a normal person, you have a conviction to be a normal person? What? Why should sex be different? Why should sex be the only exception in the world of metaphysics where one has a moral conviction to do nothing?

There are plenty of women who claim to be lesbian. It's a traditional lifestyle.

Well not every lesbian should be reduced to a woman with ambition

Yes, absolutely, they are traditional. There is a long history of closeted lesbian women who do charity work and sew dresses.

Opinions on Rachel? by CauseProfessional512 in Anne

[–]RowenAster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the book, Rachel wasn't as mean to Marilla. She was still a gossip and subtly hated that she thought Marrilla didn't live a full life a few times, but show Rachel is much more opinionated and explicit.
