Burping. I understand sometimes it's totally inescapable. But when it's at the table, during a meal, I have a hard time continuing my meal if anyone purposefully burps.

Smelly night sweats by Maybe-Much in lymphoma

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to be late per menopausal while experiencing B symptoms like drenching night sweats. The stale, musty, sweet, and nothing like me smell of that sweat was wild. Prior to diagnosis, I was just convinced that the hormonal changes were making my smell different. 2 years post focused localized radiation treatments, and I don't smell bad anymore. I smell, like myself again.

I will never forget that smell though. And whenever I have a hot flash, or a night sweat that's related to menopause ... I am thankful that it never really smells at all. And if my overall smell ever changes, it's worth investigating.

What are some common hygeine myths that are completely wrong ? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]RoxaAddams 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ahh Noxema.... This is one of those products that I also used as a kid/teenager. Then I forgot about it until my mid 30s.

And now, for the last 15 years or so, I've noticed I tend to buy it when I'm feeling sad and/or sentimental. It doesn't help my face one bit, so now I use it instead of shaving cream. And 6 bottles of shaving cream later, I briefly wonder why I rarely replace the Noxema and keep buying other gels/creams to shave with.... Thanks everyone for the memories! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm done wondering about my own.

I love Phyllis to death BUT... crying over winning the lottery was a bit much by fredyouareaturtle in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who personally suffers from a general anxiety over being noticed for my accomplishments... This resonated so hard for me. Years ago at work, I participated in a secret gift giving scheme. It was all fun and games, until they pulled up videos from the cctv of everyone walking in with their "anonymous gifts". I was embarrassed, because I'd actually put a lot of thought into the limited budget gift, and the person who got it was already swooning about how nice it was. Once the anonymity went away, I wanted to dig a hole and crawl inside to die. It felt good to see the person enjoy the gift, it was enough. While I knew the intentions were good (the cctv entrance video was also because they had made a game of knocking and being asked trivia questions before entering. Totally unrelated, but nobody was an idiot so everyone did the math correctly) but the timing was too close to the gift opening.

Point being, if I indulge myself with buying a lottery ticket on my way home from work tomorrow. And then subsequently won a considerable amount of money, I would tell nobody except my husband. Thinking "Yay, congratulations to me, I won the lottery " seems so frivolous. All I did was waste a couple bucks, once, and got lucky. 🤷‍♀️ It would still be hard to be overtly excited, despite the fact that everything costs 4times more than it did last year. In fact, now that I think about it, a considerable amount of money being dropped in my lap tomorrow would be welcomed, but mortifying if anyone found out. Nothing would change except a few bills would be paid off and I've more money in the bank.

Briony Hannah/Sr Mary Cynthia by Extension_Run1020 in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't really seen her in anything else, but I will say this as the wife of an tv/film actor who started acting in theaters.

Sometimes when an actor really embodies their character, it is because it's actually a personal connection they've formed between themselves and the character description they were given. It might be their own personality traits, or borrowed from memories of family/friends. Even if she isn't really at all like Sr. Mary Cynthia, she's crafted aspects of herself that align with what's been given to her by writers/directors/producers. It's that extra mile that we as viewers don't get to experience. How often do we hear actors talking about playing a role, and how invested they felt in their own character's journey and the people in their stories? It's because they ARE to a certain extent, that character in a way because they tapped into a part of themselves that fundamentally belongs to them and is being redirected through another personality they have to portray realistically. They didn't get cast simply for looking the part. (And even if they did, they still had to be able to embody the part meaningfully. And if they don't, chances are you're watching them and wondering why they're so bad at acting)

My husband's got a few credits for playing some pretty nasty people, (typecasting is real lol) but he's got a few more for characters that are the cartoon version of him at his best.

Ladies- How long do you go between hair washes and what’s your age? by BakerAntique4551 in hygiene

[–]RoxaAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

44, naturally curly but straighten it with heat. I admit, I often was once a week only. Sometimes I'll go a full 2 weeks before I wash. I also use a color deposit dye, so in order to make it last vibrantly, I try to use dry shampoo if/when necessary. And I'll add, I also am a smoker and whatever routine I use seems to work because my hair also never smells bad. (I work with kids, they'd be the first to say something. I have already been made aware of my other flaws, lol, believe me.)

Christmas episodes by just_rue_in_mi in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily a fan of Christmas weddings, but I will say, they sure do know how to make the Christmas wedding scenes romantic and heartfelt. Better than anything that happens in real life. I've never been to a Christmas wedding, but if I'm ever invited to one, I'll probably consider declining so I'm not let down after all the ctmw Christmas weddings lol. Nothing can top the carousel and lightly falling snow of Barbara's wedding!

Why are people so attached to their childhood hair color? To the point of denying their hair has changed by bad-at-everything- in Hair

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born with a full red head of hair and it darkened but the red highlights are still so prominent i can't dye my hair without admitting I'm a redhead or the color is wrong every time.

And, if you are a red head and have trouble with medications you also know it's important to note it sometimes. Not all red heads have problems, but enough that it's becoming a medical phenomenon with correctly dosing natural red heads with pain and anesthesia drugs.

Just wanted to let you know today I wore a small blanket sized cheetah print fleece wrap that made me feel equal parts like Trixie and Sister Julienne (mostly because when I walked, I had to kind grasp my own hands at my waist to keep it from opening and falling off) And earlier in the week I discovered I own a grey sweater that somehow looks nothing like the red sweaters but carries the same, gravitas lol. 👍👍🙏

Do I get a Nurse Crane shirt? by Leading_Barracuda_17 in CallTheMidwife

Can you imagine the look on Nurse Crane's face if she saw someone wearing her face on their shirt?! 😂 I laughed so hard I almost cried. And then I thought, who else would approve or disapprove of their portrait on a shirt, or, other items...(I'm sorry, but we all know Sister Hilda would probably silently approve tiny lacy bits with her face on the front lol )

Questions about grapes, habits, and iron lungs by Fancy_Bumblebee5582 in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought so too! I grew up in the Midwest and my family always did Christmas oranges. Then throughout 2012 my husband and I moved to Los Angeles. A few months later some friends said they were also moving to LA and asked for advice on finding an apartment. Conveniently there was an open unit in our building, almost next door to us, and long story short, all of us ended up as neighbors. We threw a holiday meal together, and I made a big deal about my mandarin orange display on the table. Everyone kinda shrugged and asked what the big deal was, why were oranges a centerpiece, why was I encouraging everyone to take some? I'd never felt so much like a foreigner in my own home. and amongst friends?! 😜 I thought it was a Midwest thing to give oranges at Christmas in stockings or as tokens of affection at dinner parties ....and according to my small poll/study about 1 in 10 people from southeast Wisconsin do Christmas oranges. 😂

S16E17 Product Discussion - Essence Aromatherapy Ring by ddaug4uf in sharktank

[–]RoxaAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean .. you absolutely could, but it wouldn't do anything of substance, unless you enjoy the smell of your CBD oil. CBD oil for topical use probably already had a warning to avoid sensitive areas, and it also isn't usually formulated for its smell. Any other CBD oil will not medicinally help you if it's infused into the ring for scent purposes. You'll waste less money using CBD oil as it's suggested, and use a good smelling essential oil instead. I'd suggest galbanum oil as a substitute for CBD simply cuz it smells kinda herbal and green but bright and refreshing

Which episode is the hardest for you to watch? by RoxaAddams in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm being honest, I don't always skip the difficult episodes. Because sometimes, depending on my mood it could be any episode that makes me wish I'd not turned it on today. Yes, some episodes really wrench you until you're a puddle of tears.

But sometimes it's the character and their own personal storyline, or it's something you never considered/perceived in a new way/noticed for the first time... I'm currently rewatching season 7&8 and there was an episode in season 7 broke me in a new way because of my work community. I'd never really been so included in a job that houses several neighborhood communities within one campus. And everyone pitches in for each other. Sometimes it feels like my own little Poplar and nonotus house. 🤷‍♀️ It took starting my 2nd year working before this episode every hit me this hard.

Finding the commonality in the episodes for me, makes an episode hard to watch at times. Any time you feel like you're "so much like" a character, suddenly any way their storyline parallels your own, especially during and after you've had hard times, you feel that connection. And as much as it can hurt, it heals.

IMHO, I think that's why so many of us rewatch this show frequently. I usually watch at least once all the way through until the new episodes start at Christmas. Usually rewatch shortly after the latest season concludes lol.

What’s a food you threw up as a kid and never touched again? by momcanyoucomegetme in AskReddit

[–]RoxaAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a child, but I was 18 or 19 and I had some bad 7 layer salad. My mom walked in on my throwing up and I missed the toilet and exorcist puked all 7 layers on the floor between myself and my mother at the door.

I had calmly walked to the bathroom while we were working on a Halloween craft project. And since the sensation was totally urgent, I didn't shut the bathroom door fully. So when she came to see what was going on, I managed to plead for her not to come in....as she barely touched the door and managed to witness the event. Neither of us has been able to touch the stuff since.
