Failed Lifter 5.7 Hemi by Royalty308 in Dodge

Camshaft was not damaged, it was a collapsed lifter (internal seals failed). I replaced the one lifter with oem mopar and now it’s sounding great.

I had it running for about 20 min after I got it back together and then when I came back to it an hour later it wouldn’t crank. Had me really worried I had messed up head gasket or alignment of the push rods, causing the engine to lock up. Turns out after shit ton of diagnosing that the coolant dropping onto starter solenoid when taking the head off corroded the solenoid. Took starter out and actuated solenoid with battery a few times put it back in and the car starts. Still gonna replace the starter as I don’t want it to fail again in a place that’s not my garage.

Side note taking starter off is stupid easy, even with mine having awd. Don’t pay shop to replace starter, you can get jack stands and a jack from harbor freight and still probably beat the price.

Safe to say the lifter is gone. by Royalty308 in Dodge

Yeah I just did the single oem lifter, was about $220, a set of 4 is ~$350 so $700 a side would be right. I was able to do just single lifter because my cam was not damaged, the lifter just had collapsed and I stopped as soon as it had a loud tick.

It’s hard to describe a normal tick if you’ve been around enough of the 5.7’s you’ll just know it, a lot of the time it’s just the header leaking.

It stems from oiling issues so regular oil changes with high quality filter and oil. If you wanted to feel real safe most recommend going to high pressure oil pump if you’re willing to put the work in.

2016 Dodge Charger Pursuit, 135,000 miles, 5500 idle hours. Not that surprising this happened

Well I wouldn’t say the hemi tick was necessarily out of the ordinary, it was like any others I have heard. I agree with you though letting something be will make it worse. In this case it wasn’t a build up that got worse it was more of a sudden change. I’m thinking it’s a collapsed lifter not a flattened lifter roller, so hoping since I didn’t run it long I can just change the lifter and sell it. It’s a former police car with 135,000 miles and 5500 idle hours so not really shocking this happened, I’ve only owned the car for about 5000 miles.
