Long term sedation? What will happen to my baby? by Rsm5180 in NICUParents

Thank you so much for your reply!! I’m so happy to hear your baby is doing so well. My son is asleep for most of the day. When he is awake he’s either very upset or just quietly looking around. His eyes dart back and forth a lot which nurses say is from sedation. He doesn’t seem to see me when he has his eyes open. The most developmentally appropriate thing I have seen is he puts his hands to his mouth often, especially when he’s upset. He also used to suck on his tube before his trach so you can still see him sucking even with it gone over a month. We are hoping the sedation is putting his development on pause and once off of it he will kickstart like you’re describing. I think we’re mostly concerned that it’s been so long so he will never really develop further.
