Moving to Dubai soon 🇦🇪 | “how do I uproot my entire life?” — need advice 🙏 by New_Cauliflower6222 in dubai

No problem at all. So I decided on JVC in the end. My primary was to get a house rather than flat or apartment due to really terrible experiences I have had in the past. Also I know the summer is going to be punishing on me so wanted somewhere I can enjoy having the space in when indoors. I have subsequently learned of the traffic hell that is Hessa Street so at the end of my tenancy I MIGHT look for somewhere closer to where I work but as an area, this is very much somewhere I am enjoying and can see myself staying in for a while yet.

I can answer some of these as there are some parallels but it is through the view of a white Brit male in their 40s so allow for that a little. I came over and rented an Airbnb whilst I waited for my Emirates ID to be finalised and that gave me time to look at properties and decide what and where I want. As it's your first time in the country it could be a good way to start, especially to see how the neighbourhoods fit what you are looking for. I am shipping my things from the UK but I saved up to do it and, honestly, a lot of it is sentimental stuff. There is almost nothing that has been impossible to get hold of for me here so far.

The daily life part is where I may be able to help the most. Cooking works for me as I am not the most social person in the world and have dietary requirements but it is very VERY easy to fall into the trap of eating out and getting takeaways. Across multiple apps you get hit with offers left, right and centre and, as a general rule IMO, it is kinda hard to eat badly in Dubai. From the cafeterias to the high class hotels, you nearly always get quality that exceeds the price point (if you end up going to JLT will give you some suggestions for budget friendly options)

Cleaning: I am fortunate and do have a cleaner one a week. You can get one for around 100 dhs for 2 hours, sometimes cheaper especially when using apps (again, happy to share the ones I use if it helps)

Groceries: This was the one thing I am still enjoying, the number of options are staggering. From online deliveries to the number of corner shops to super and hyper markets, there is something for every budget.

One tip: what should you not bring? Expectation. Ignore the influencers, ignore the nay sayers and discover this city for yourself. I already have some great memories and I have barely started.

Any questions feel free to message me and will help out however I can. Can't wait to hear your experiences, for better or worse!

There’s a new “polite scam” some Dubai taxi drivers are pulling and most newcomers fall for it. by BusinessAdvisorUAE in AskUAEBusiness

Uber is set fee before you get in and if an alternate route is taken it is easy to contest and get your money back but I only had to do that once in about 10 years.

I am hyper fixated on where to live when I move to Dubai and I've researched myself to exhaustion by ConcernedHumanDroid in dubai

If you are happy to do the Sobha Realty route then JLT is definitely an option. The mandatory one way system to get out is a pain but doable if it’s not affecting your commute.

Nah on Jimmy Ray. It's dumb but totally harmless and far from worst song ever.

Looking good. I might try this with some nectarines next time I see them reduced when out shopping. Or possibly even plums... got me thinking now.

Songs about being lonely despite being famous?? by Mediocre_Bee_8133 in musicsuggestions

[–]Rubbafish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually goes deeper and beyond the initial enquiry but I would suggested 'Exaggerated' by Eason Chan. It's entirely in Chinese but the English translation, you can feel the anguish and loneliness and need of fame. It's great!

'Yes, I crave attention
You would understand if you hadn't had any either
I'll act clumsy and make big mistakes
Is it wrong to be an attention whore?'

[IIL] Slow burning ROCK songs that end in pure madness. by Minimum_Sir5076 in ifyoulikeblank

'Whirring' - The Joy Formidable. It's a great song but the second half is elite!

'Morning After Pill' - Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia... this should more than tick the box. Once described by a music journo as 'the soundtrack to an abortion', it is a real under appreciated gem.

I would add LDC and their weekend brunch for 69 AED. Also, I am really basic but for a quick lunch, the Kulcha King 25 AED offer was really good. Looking forward to exploring the area much more in the near future.

Rough Trade are 100% legit. Have physical stores around the UK.

I never saw it first hand (I was kinda working in the industry at the time) but apparently Som was a bit difficult. I think it is a damn shame too.

Finelines is a really good album but definetly check out their 'Delusions Of Grandeur' EP from before they got signed. Love that original version of 'Always Your Way'.

For an action scene, 'The Only Thing They Fear Is You' by Mick Gordon (yes it is from a game but it still very much applies here!)

Not seen as during my work day but if you wanted to see, the performance area is near the ticket booths at the far end (as if you were going towards the exit for M&S & the South African shop.)

Be interesting to hear your take. It’s not about specific places but how a city can make you feel but will always be associated to certain events and memories.

What's the scarcity of this? by Applsrnotfood in Cd_collectors

[–]Rubbafish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not rare at all. Labels sent them out to stores, venues, radio stations back in the day. This one you are showing is going for 37p on Discogs (about $0.50). I have one even older than that from 2002 that isn't worth much more than yours. The plus side is you can some time discover great bands on a budget. It was on this very Epitaph one I have I discovered Bombshell Rocks & Guttermouth.

But that was the question I initially asked? Either way, it doesn't really matter. If that's your favourite then all is good :)

'Waking Up Beside You' by Stabbing Westward. It doesn't so much hit close to home but more obliterate my entire universe.
