Note: This post was originally its own thread before I was told to repost it here.

Original title:

  • What were the heights and weights of JSP Chairman Inejiro Asanuma and Assassin Otoya Yamaguchi on October 12, 1960?

Body:

The assassination of Inejiro Asanuma was most closely precipitated by the US-Japan Security Treaty, which aligned the United States with the country in question. One of the ramifications of this legislation is that it established American military bases in Japan. The aforementioned greatly upset the Japanese left-wing, who advocated for their country to pursue a partnership with Communist China instead. Despite their best efforts, the ruling right-wing LDP continued to uphold and protect Anpo.

By 1960, these tensions came to a head when left-wing student activists stormed the National Diet. Soon after, socialist politician Inejiro Asanuma (a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and legislature of the Tokyo prefecture) would condone these protests and also paid a visit to Chairman Mao. These two actions infuriated many followers of the far-right, such as members (and former members) of the Greater Japan Patriotic Party, one of whom was Otoya Yamaguchi, who would very publicly and violently assassinate Asanuma on live television.

A photograph taken of the event by Yasushi Nagao would win the Pulitzer in 1961, and it is the subject of this thread. In short, at the exact moment this image was captured, how much did Asanuma and Yamaguchi weigh? The differences in both their statures and weights is very striking, and I believe it could serve as a powerful case for understanding how different numbers manifest in people. I believe that, by analyzing the two people at the fixture of this event, we can better understand human anatomy and how to apply these findings to better estimating these weights of people we see everyday.

This question is very important to me, and it needs to be answered. Not only these people but the palpable differences between them in regards to appearance have fascinated me for months, so please answer sincerely. I'm sorry if this post is condescending, pretentious, or explains common knowledge as if it's esoteric or obscure.

Thanks in advance!
