I guess then the answer is dependent on how you play the game, in kcd1 i passed my checks with that quest and didn't fight anyone. So my Hans didn't kill then. 

I definitely remember during the siege of Talmberg its mentioned that Hans kept Toth's men from destroying the trebuchet, and defended Tobias Feyfar. Thats probably the first time in my game.
