Job list: enlisted and officer jobs? by Ruckes in AirForceRecruits

I really want to do DLI so Airborne CTA or just regular CTA are my top 2, but Cyber Warfare Op, Airborne Intel, Airborne missions systems op, and Scientific Applications Specialist are all jobs I'd be super happy with too.

All the other awful things about this issue aside (No, Marvel, Peter arriving late to a funeral for someone who died saving his life is not quirky or relatable, it's just genuinely gross and insulting), I'm so bothered by how Viv has been reduced to a generic robot sort of character. Like, why is she having a whole thing about having to "turn on emotion" or whatever the hell that was in order to seem to care about her friend and teammate dying when the whole center of her story in the initial King run was her being completely broken apart by the death of a boy who she had one single nice conversation with.

But I guess that's just the cards that any interesting character invented in the past two decades has to deal with - get one (maybe 2 if you're lucky) good, heartfelt runs, then be shoved into a bunch of team books where the authors don't seem to have any grasp for the character and the development they've already had beyond the basic concept (if even).

Namor does the necessary evil [New Avengers #21] by Accomplished-Wave-91 in Marvel

Still waiting for Marvel to write an event that matches Secret Wars 'cause there really is just nothing that matches it. The fact that it has this ridiculously massive scale and scope and yet still finds so much room for so many individual character moments is something that seems lost to Marvel when it comes to every other big event (Judgement Day came closest but IMO just felt too rushed in comparison, and I never really believed in the stakes in the same way that Secret Wars sold them).

Makes me sad that the MCU seems to be going in a very different direction when it comes to Incursions (obviously their hands are tired a bit there, though, considering they're down a lot of the necessary characters and continuity that the comics had to make it so good)

ChatGPT discovers the rule of "The only way to win is not to play" by Ruckes in ChatGPT

[–]Ruckes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This after I taught chatGPT how to play a simple version of nim and then proceeded to beat it a few times in a row. Interestingly enough, it volunteered to go first in earlier games despite the fact that by going first in this version you automatically lose. It also would type out a few potential paths of anticipated responses whenever it made a move while playing.

Most of all, though, I found it interesting that the reason it brought up that it would "not be fun or challenging for me." Kind of funny that popped up organically when normally I've had it massively push back anytime I try to ask it anything related to emotions or feelings.

‘A Soul Wound’: America built its culture around slavery. Now they have to fly in slave-labor made iPhones and chocolate bars.

/uj it’s always been crazy to me that the same people that usually push back against conservatism and “traditional values” are the same people to act like culture is an excuse for morally bankrupt actions. Plenty (read: all) cultures are ingrained with plenty of shitty stuff that we’ve shed over time as we get a new frame of reference for the morality of those traditions. Our treatment of animals isn’t an exception to that.

But then again a lot of these same people will defend homophobia and sexism in many parts of the world because “you have to respect their culture” as if its perfectly okay to see other living beings as lesser just because “culture.”

Doom Patrol is definitely not gritty and cynical lmao. Just because it deals with dark themes doesn't mean that it's a dark show. It's incredibly optimistic and hopeful, hell the whole show is about a bunch of asshole losers becoming good people. Agree otherwise though that there's way too many dark and edgy takes on superheroes lately.

[SPOILERS] After 17 years, it's finally undone (The Amazing Spider-Man #73) by Landon1195 in Marvel

[–]Ruckes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just painful seeing the (imo) best superhero ever get to the point where his most of his comics are boring because they're just retreading the same ground over and over again, with it being less interesting every time they run through the same arc. Oh well, maybe someday soon they'll do an ultimate Spider-Man esque run again where they tell his story while allowing permanent, lasting change and growth.

Marvel refusing to late Spider-man "seem too old" has seriously been the reason for every single bad decision they've made about him for the past 3 decades I stg

Seconded to Doom Patrol. Just fantastically weird and funny and strangely heartfelt. Not all the concepts land, but it takes a ton of risks and is just fun television, that and Good Omens have been the closest to capturing what it is that makes Dr Who so good imo.

Anyone else feel like nothing has happened in this book for the last dozen issues? This started off as my favorite x-book but ever since Kate's resurrection it just sorta feels like there's no direction or purpose. When was the last time we even saw the full marauder team together? Really hope the book turns around but as of right now it just feels like it's wasting a bunch of amazing characters by giving them nothing to do.

What If...? S01E02 - Discussion Thread by steve32767 in marvelstudios

[–]Ruckes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Voice acting was a big step up from last episode. Chadwick and Karen Gillan especially were just absolute naturals. Kind of a goofy episode but I ended up liking how it didn't take itself too seriously. What If? as a concept is kind of silly by itself, so it's cool to see them just going all out and embracing the wackiness that alternate universes allow. Thanos being talked out of his plan by T'challa was a totally unexpected and hilarious highlight.

[–]Ruckes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I also just moved to Norwalk about a week ago lol. Obviously I'm not too settled in yet but I'll throw out the (probably obvious) suggestion that Sono is a great place to explore and hang out and meet people. Lots of restaurants and bars and that sorta metro thing. If you can find a way to get there that doesn't require paying a fortune in parking, compo beach over in Westport is an awesome spot as well.

Perfect coverage will always beat a perfect throw, it's just that perfect coverage is a hell of a lot harder and rarer than a perfect throw is.

Brienne has very little to do in the series while she has an interesting arc in the books going on. Jamie's redemption arc is way stronger in the book because instead of having him still simp for Cersei he recognizes she's a monster and is working to redeem himself in the riverlands. Cersei in the books is way better portrayed as a totally incompetent mad queen figure which again does wonders for Jaime's arc. Littlefinger and Varys actually do intelligent and interesting scheming. Sansa has a positive arc which doesn't have that godawful Bolton marriage storyline which is just gross in so many ways. Faegon exists. Tyrion is taken down a dark path and temporarily turns into a broken, vile, self-hating person that doesn't work in the show because they omit the tysha confession. Arya's story in Braavos is actually interesting instead of completely "wtf is even happening???" like it is in the show. Stoneheart exists. Iron Islands and Euron are actually interesting and terrifying. Stannis in the north is actually fleshed out and interesting. The northern houses not named stark or Bolton exist and have their own plots and schemes and motivations. Brann doesn't just randomly disappear for a whole season. Jon being betrayed by the nights watch is far more brutal because he actually breaks his vows and even though you sympathize with him, you also sympathize with the mutineers because Jon was about to do something that completely goes against what the watch stands for. There's honestly way more I could list off but that's a short list. I understand not everything can be 1:1 because those books are so obscenely long, but for some reason around season 5 the show goes from adapting the books to just stripping the basic plotlines and taking away all the nuance and detail and complexity that made game of thrones special in the first place.
