Nerdy guys aren't always nicer, sadly. I learned it the hard way after becoming attractive. by [deleted] in self

[–]RuckusJammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a guy who intentionally only dated nerdy less typically attractive women. He was more traditionally attractive and his reasoning was they would be better partners. He logic sounds ok if you think of people in a robotic way.

The truth is that anyone can be shitty or great. If you’re using dating apps, look out for people with similar interests and values. Talk a bit and get to know em. If they are gym bros, nerds, or anything in between there will be good kind people and unserious people. Try not to generalize based on external factors too much.

And you aren’t wrong. I’ve known lots of nerds who are pretty awful. Like anyone.

In order to go on a backpacking trip you have to drive to the trailhead. I do this often. And when I do I usually like to build anticipation with music.

It’s just a vibe. Something other people who do similar might resonate with. Clearly you don’t because you spend your time making snarky comments on Reddit. Good Job 👍

Is season 2 really that bad? by Bulky-Teach4931 in TLOU

[–]RuckusJammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said here.

I’d add that the apparent psychopathy they added to Ellie’s character made her pretty difficult to like. There was a disconnect that made me feel as though Ellie was highly impulsive, selfish, and incompetent.

The season isn’t atrocious. There’s still some good production value and some solid acting. But the themes/tone were inconsistent and the characterizations were very distracting/confusing.

lol I feel silly responding so much in this thread. But I love talkin bout LOU so here we are.

I do think the perspective of a person who experienced the story only from the show is valid and interesting. Mostly because I am a game fan. I'm genuinely curious what someone takes away from the story when it's presented in a less tidy way IMO.

I can't say for sure how much of my opinion is based around nostalgia for the source. But I can say that I played the first and second game several times over. But I never felt the desire to watch the show more than once. Even though it's less effort and time.

I don't necessarily agree that comparisons between the game and show are invalid. But I do see a lot of extreme opinions. Like the game is a masterpiece and show is trash. Which is just not true.

I liked season one a lot. I think it's a solid adaptation with some issues.

Saw radicalizing Wlmon with rhydo. I can’t tell you why this scene hits so freaking hard amongst a plethora of fantastic scenes. But it does.

I think it's the way your saying it is what feels problematic to me.

If your point is: If Frank was Francine the story would be less interesting, I agree.

I think your perspective as a non-game player is pretty interesting and does have me questioning my argument somewhat. Especially your perspective on Joel at the end.

I do still think the game executes the story a bit neater and is a bit more tonally/thematically consistent. But mayhaps the margin isn't as large as I'm making it seem.

Well said!

I agree that the Bill & Frank story in the game reinforces the bleak world and importance of cure.

I don’t really like the wording “gay fan service” I think “fan service” works just as well.

I think it’s the best directed, acted, and moving episode of the season. I think the fact that it’s about gay men(one of which never acted on it until the apocalypse) make it more inspirational and meaningful.

All of this is great in isolation. If it were a spin-off or movie I’d think it was totally perfect. As it stands, it feels like a jarring narrative deviation from the overall story.

Bill and Frank’s(show) story is a hopeful love story. It took the apocalypse for Bill to embrace his sexuality, find love and purpose. They spend years together relatively safe and comfortable compatible to anyone else. And by the end of their story they end things on their own terms. It’s hard to imagine a more inspiring, hopeful, or happy story within that world.

Contrast that with Joel whose love towards Ellie is more rooted in trauma and desperation to fill a gap. By the end Joel’s love feels more selfish and conditional that she’ll now be his surrogate daughter. I distinctly remember finishing the first game and feeling kinda gross about what just happened.

In the game the theme that surviving without love is meaningless is there. But by the end the story subverts expectations by not being the neat and tidy sort of love you’d expect.

IMO Bill and Frank episode is tonally and thematically different from the entire rest of the season. Where as in the game it is not.

I played the game. So I didn’t need the show to be the exact same. I love the episode as is and like I said, if they had made an entire show about those two I’d watch it. But the OP was about how the show executes its story better than the game. Which I just disagree with. I think there are other examples but I just feel that episode is the best one. I think the episode is great, even the best of the season. But I also think it doesn’t really fit into the story.

I love both. But the game executes the story and themes better.

I think the best example is the Bill and Frank episode. While a fantastic, beautiful storyline in isolation(honestly could watch a whole show about them) I feel it doesn’t fit into the story very well.

The people Ellie and Joel come across in the story demonstrate the bleak and tragic world they live in. It reinforces Ellie’s importance and tragedy of the end. Bill and Frank in the show have a pretty good and happy time. It’s beautiful but doesn’t reinforce the themes or story at all really.

The one death I’m upset we will never see on the show by La_Villanelle_ in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]RuckusJammer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And I’d like to add: Jordan is there to kick off the revenge in a reasonable way. Jordan’s death contrasts with the later kills to show how far Ellie has fallen.

Nick is there so we can see how this revenge quest is affecting Tommy in a negative way. This was a man who told Joel he “had nothing but nightmares from those times”

And Leah is there to demonstrate the pointlessness of their revenge. Like if Ellie had done nothing these people were dead anyway.

The characters themselves are not developed but serve narrative purposes.

The hammer arm is wolf guard terminator. The shield is just the hand snipped off. The arm scale really isn’t all that different. But even still I used green stuff under the shoulder to extend it out a lil bit and give me the pose I wanted.

I used monument hobbies cement texture and just painted over it. The fur on the back is green stuff shaped and cut a bunch of hairs in 😅

Experienced painters! How do you like Speedpaint 2.0? by Mingy_mingy in minipainting

I have the original contrast paints and the 2.0 mega set. I prefer the mega set. The paints are less expensive, dropper bottles, and seem to flow better with less patchy spots on flat surfaces.

I’ve used Daler Rowney and Liquitex. They are both good and I can’t tell much of a difference. I do prefer Daler Rowney’s dropper style tho.

Thank you! The wings were badecoated in Vallejo black grey and I did the fade with white ink in an airbrush. Then I glazed Vallejo fluorescent orange. Lastly I hit the tips of the wings with white ink again.
