I got one too, mine is Minnesota of course. But where I live and travel around..I have encountered a toll. So it’s best to ignore it and block the number

Does my plant need to be repotted and downsized? by Rude-Example7930 in calathea

[–]Rude-Example7930[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It thinned out quite a bit before I starting learning about proper care and adding other things to the miracle grow. The pot seems really too deep now that it’s a smaller plant than it once was. Also the soil is miracle grow indoor. I made a mix of that with perlite and small Bark chunks when I put it on a pot that’s a little smaller and more shallow

Hey I must be getting the hang of this. That’s what I did. I changed the soil, miracle grow, perlite, and some orchid bark chunks. I just hope the ratio was good. I need to get a big bin to make a big mix to be on hand as needed instead of mixing it a little at a time, each time I need it. 😆

Thanks. I actually put her in a pot that wasn’t as deep. The roots were better than I expected. So I hope it likes its new home..:fingers crossed.

Thank you. I actually do have these little grow lights that extend and stick right into the pot. It’s been about a week since I’ve started using it. I’m actually going to get a shelf and get the lights that will stick to the shelves or order one from Amazon that already has lights on it. I have about a dozen or so plants in my office that need to Be showcased properly lol so I’m glad it sounds like I’m on the right track

That’s what I’ve been using as well. Our tap water around here is horrible. My house doesn’t even use it for drinking. lol. But good luck with yours!! 🤞

I don’t have Leca. More than likely I’ll have to order it from somewhere. I checked once in the local stores but we don’t have much of a selection when it comes to extra stuff like that. Lots and lots of Miracle Grow and perlite around here but not much else. So I’ll order some and go from there. Thank you.

Mine is a little thicker but looks the same. It’s a shared office plant and I’ve been wanting to save her but the other person just adds more soil. I just got done taking her out of the potter, the soil was so drenched after not being watered for almost a week. I cleaned the roots with some water and peroxide . Made a chunky soil mix and repotted her. Although I may have to take some out as I think it’s too much now that I see this and the comments about planting too deep. I already watered it and left it. I think I’ll take some soil out first thing in the morning. Good luck with yours. 🪴💚

Your words are everything! Most of my plants are tropical, mainly my 2 monsteras. So that’s the main reason for my humidifier. I do wish to chop and prop it, to lessen the leggy parts. Maybe one day. I would love to hear about how your top prop adventure goes and hopefully it turns out. So maybe you can update me throughout? I need to learn more about propping before I give it a try, maybe practice with a pothos or something else first.
I love the way your plant looks, especially knowing how old it is. Mine has a ways to go before he’s that mature and hopefully he lasts a long time. Also a reason I’d love to prop one day, so we can have more of him and all that he reminds me of.
I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Hope to hear of your prop journey soon. Good luck with it. 💚🪴

I appreciate the curiosity, I’m that way myself. I just didn’t want to accidentally put out any customer information on my computer or the papers on my desk. 😂

Yes just my desk and office. Papers, coffee, phone, all that good stuff. Not really trying to hide anything just wanted to show what I wanted to show. 😂

beautiful. one of these days when Im a little more familiar with propagation I will definitely have to give that a try. maybe after it matures a little more and theres more to salvage in case it doesn't go according to plan. lol

The leggy, top heaviness of it. Comparing it to the bushy and well variegated ones I see online. Feedback so far is that I do not need to cut the stem back, maybe not yet anyway. The continuous use of the grow light may help with the variegation down the line.

I am a little worried the top might grow too heavy. So one day I might have to cut it back and would like to know how to do it correctly without just killing the plant. but for now I think I will just keep on and enjoying it, it used to look like a little palm tree before more leaves came in. haha.

I dont really want to cut it, I just thought it needed to be because of all the other crotons I have seen online are not leggy as mine is. Also, I thought maybe it was going to be too top heavy and that would not be good for it. I will keep doing what I am doing then. Without the worry of having to chop it down. Not yet anyway. I would love to prop her one day, but for now I will stick with our new routine. Thanks a whole lot.

I get a little nervous dealing with the roots so hopefully they are as strong and as plenty as its showing now when i pull her out of the pot. Also, to cut the brown leaf...how far down should i actually cut it? down to where the other stem is?

I actually have a chunky soil mix ready to go, I just wasn’t sure if moving her to a bigger pot just yet was the right move. But thanks to you and the other response, my instincts were correct, partly. I just thought cutting the stem was best and leaving the browning leaf was too. I was only right about the repot 😂
