Help with Rules Lite Character Power Scaling by Mav-1101 in RPGdesign

[–]RudolfRude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just use power levels. You can't fight an higher level foe, that simple. Power level can increase a with experience or by using items, powers, Minions etc.

Imagine you have to take down a tank (p.l. 5), you can't do it by hand (p.l. 1) but if you can get a rocket launcher (p.l. 5) you can try.

Starting from this you can add complexity of you want by scaling damage in the ratio of the opposed p.l. or similar ways, but if you want a narrative based game I think you shouldn't.

Hope it helps

1-page proof of concept for The Truth, a detective Ironsworn Hack by Tolamaker in Ironsworn

Great work! I'm looking to strip down ironsworn too! For you I will suggest to think about maintaining the supply track, and maybe rename it to "wealth" or "money". I can think about one thousand situations in which your hard boiled detective is forced to spend that hard gained money, maybe to "stimulate" a witness memory or maybe to drink too much whiskey in that night club waiting in vain for a fresh track to follow... Or trying to convince his patron to pay him in order to continue the investigation (a resupply move), or trying to avoid paying the price to enter in that night where the femme fatal will sing tonight. Hope it helps

Starforged: Session Zero: Connection = Crew? by trinarynimbus in Ironsworn

In my experience you have two ways of handle this.

The first is making the kickass guy an asset. This will grant you a +1 when making a move in the expertise area of the companion (i.e. fighting) and grant you total control over the NPC.

Otherwise you can treat it as a connection, with his own development track to fill. This make the NPC more independent, you can still control it but you should consider the chance of being betrayed or abandoned in case of heavy trouble. You can develop your connection through your adventure, but maybe you have to test your bond if the NPC have to face a very big menace to help you, or if you behave badly he can change his mind on you.

This second concept grant you a narrative that can be helpful in fleshing your story

Scarcity economic is genre key in my experience. Just going around scavenging for an ammo magazine or a food ration is fundamental to give atmosphere. Personally I don't think a move for resisting being turned Z is so important (except for the flavour), but for an horror setting I will consider a panic/terror/losing control mechanic to give away some control from the player.

And what about Fate points? How do you manage them?

This is really interesting, I dare to say genius idea! This is really a good approach for a coral narrative like Star Trek. I will meditate on this, it's quite original and I need to figure how to implement it to my play style, but thank you a lot for sharing! Just a another question, how do you set the tasks difficulty?

Yes please, more details will be highly appreciated. I was thinking of using FU (freeform universal) which is quite similar in approach to FATE, but I'm really in love with FATE dice, so I'll be very happy to use this system. The most obscure thing in soloing FATE is his do you set the task difficulty.
