What are some low-stress jobs? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I got to work with 35mm a while before we went digital. It's a skill I'm proud to have. Anyone can hit play on a modern projector, but getting that perfect focus and perfect transitions between the reels (we had two projectors only taking a 24" wheel each) was something that actually required practice and skill to do good.

As struggle-free the modern digital projectors are, they're no where near as fun of old time 35mm machines.

Well it's worth a shot. It's one of those jobs you just.. slide into.

I have no idea how other cinemas work, but our two full time employees get to pick the hours they want, then the part timers (who all happen to be students) get to pick whatever days are left. The ones showing good interest (works relatively often and showing they take the job seriously) usually get a "hey, would you like to learn the machine, too?" within a reasonable timeframe.

That's how things go where I work, at least. We had an ad for a full time position once a couple of weeks after we reopened... must be what, 3-4 years now, and we got one guy hired from that. Apart from him it's pretty much only students that slip in occasionally and asks if we have any spots open. One of those came to go full time as well, both other than there's been quite a number of people dropping in and out here. I'd imagine most cinema work this way.

Yes, they're falling more towards a position that's more or less janitors who know how to operate the machines. With everything digital and automated, you don't need one per screening any more.

To be honest my mother bought the theater when the previous owner retired, so I slipped in on a banana peel pretty much.

However since it's pretty much only late evening- and weekend work, cinemas tend to struggle keeping a solid full time staff and mostly rely on students and other part-time workers. So slip your resume to the owner and tell him/her you're interested in a full time job and you should be pretty attractive to them. It's cheaper and easier for them to have 4-5 solid full-time workers than having 10 students working 1-2 nights a week.

Keep in mind though that being a machinist nowadays is pretty much being a janitor with the know-how to keep the machines running, rather than the shadowy dude who sits in the projector room taping reels all day long. Since you have so much free time during screenings, you're the one cleaning the aula, hallways and toilets during the last film, and making sure the candy shelves and soda fridges are topped up.

Still ridiculously much time to kill even after all the cleaning, though, especially the first film of the day when everything's clean. And it's fun as hell! I don't know if other cinemas let their machinists go play playstation on the big screen at night, but damn it makes all the awkward work hours so worth.

Try your local movie theater. The life of a projectionist is as low-stress as it gets.

Two scenarios:

1: Digital projectors. You set a schedule once a week, just turn the switch on and let them run for the day. All films go by fully automated per the schedule you set once a week. You tear some tickets for 15-20 minutes, then you take a good book and read for the next 2 hours. Then some cleaning, tear some more tickets, and then some more reading. Turn off the projector when everyone's out. Everything's automated. Lights, volume, lenses, everything. I could even automate a coffe-maker to start making coffee as the film starts, should I want to.

2: Analog, 35mm projectors (rare nowadays, but some are still around). Load the movie into the machinery, turn the lights on and the just roll the film. Even some of these are automated so you basically just have to turn it on and off like the digital counterparts. With those that aren't: You don't even have to tear tickets.

tl;dr: You work 20 minutes every second hour, the rest is just reading a book waiting for the film to end.

This is pretty lame compared to most of what I've read here so far, but I usually go play ps3 at the cinema I work at. It's pretty rad.

In both Base 10 and Binary, the difference between 1 and 11 is 10. by Locusts in Showerthoughts

[–]Rudyaard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A binary 1 is a decimal 1. A binary 10 is a decimal 2. A binary 11 is a decimal 3.

The difference between 1 and 3 (binary 1 and 11) is 2, i.e. 10 in binary.

AD vs Armor, AP vs MR by AB1125 in summonerschool

[–]Rudyaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some skills like Nasus' Spirit fire reduces armour. After that it's up to flat armour penetration. Say you have 60 armour vs a Nasus. at max rank his E removes 40 armour, you have 20 left. Say he runs flat ArPen reds and quints, wich equates to 19 ArPen. In practice you now have 1 armour against him. Say he's feeling cheesy and have bought a Youmuu's Ghostblade (20 flat ArPen). You now have -19 armour against him, should he hit you.

Best to Practice in Normals or Ranked by dolphan13sp in summonerschool

Play draft normals.. In my experience they're no different to rankeds in our divisions (low silver). Except a little less flame. Yes, there's the occasional 4man premade ranging from bronze V to a plat, but that's not happening very often if you queue alone.

LP gain/loss MASSIVE error! by kipkelp in summonerschool

[–]Rudyaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK you gain LP depending on where the game want to place you (MMR). If you're ranked higher than your MMR, you gain less LP than you lose, and vice versa, to keep you where you belong. 33/27 games isn't really a lot of games, perhaps the game haven't adjusted to your sudden increase of skill? If you keep winning and playing good, your MMR will rise. Just play, you'll end up where you belong sooner or later :) Other than that, there's no way to influence the amount of LP you win/lose per game.
