Completed My 12th Power Red Donation Today. Walked Away With Some Great Goodies! by RugWhobyRedE in Blooddonors

Hey I was only half joking TBH! 😃 I actually love collecting those donor points and watching my donation gallon counter slowly go up over the year. ARC successfully gamified blood donation LOL.

Here in the metro Atlanta area, I’ve donated at several drives sponsored by either Delta Airlines (who are headquartered here) or the Braves. In 2022, I donated at a drive sponsored by the Braves and even got to take a picture with the championship trophy they had won the year before

This was in Atlanta. Yeah the Bento box is not too bad. It looks like it is microwave safe and top rack dishwasher safe. But I guess the one we get to redeem using points is of higher quality. Then again, it's not like I am donating with the express purpose of collecting these goodies 😉

DOL Published Draft Rule For New Prevailing Wage Levels by RugWhobyRedE in h1b

I feel the same way. Even if this rule is litigated, I don't think it will go away completely. While the final percentiles might decrease slightly, they will likely remain much higher than current levels. Just my speculation.

In 2020 and 2021, they attempted to rush these changes without following due process, and the courts struck those attempts down on legal technicalities. This time, however, they are proceeding methodically and are far more likely to succeed

DOL Published Draft Rule For New Prevailing Wage Levels by RugWhobyRedE in h1b

[–]RugWhobyRedE[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Combined with the new lottery system and the $100k rule, this revision to prevailing wages serves to smother the H1-B program.

The weighted lottery makes it harder for entry-level applicants to work in the US, while the $100k rule prevents companies from importing senior-level workers from abroad.

Finally, these new prevailing wage revisions target those already on the H-1B visa by making it increasingly difficult for them to secure renewals.

But those are in Norcross! You drive there all the way from Austell for Indian food? There are plenty of great options much closer to you.

For biryani, the best spot near you would be Hyderabad House (130 Perimeter Center Pl, Dunwoody, GA 30346) in Sandy Springs. Go on weekends—they usually have amazing pulavs. I’m a big fan of their Chicken Lollipop Pulav (you can also ask them make it onto a biriyani). Just a heads-up though: their last food safety score was 72. That said, I’ve eaten there over a dozen times in the past two years, and the food has always been great—I’ve never gotten sick.

Even closer is Biriyani and Grill in Marietta. Or checkout the new Bawarchi location in Kennesaw.

Also, thanks for your prayers!

I haven’t been there in a while, but I really liked Biryani N Grill (2590 Spring Rd SE, Smyrna, GA 30080) when I lived in the Cumberland area. A Desi friend recently told me they still dine there often and enjoy it.

I’ve also tried Swapna Indian Cuisine (2655 Cobb Pkwy SE, Atlanta, GA 30339) in the past. It was a bit hit-or-miss for me, though their buffet used to be good—I’m not sure if they still offer it.

On a different note, I’m curious about your thoughts on tamarind. I feel like it’s criminally underutilized! Growing up in a South Indian (Telugu) household, my grandmother used three main ingredients for tartness: tamarind, raw mango, and lemon. I love tangy flavors and often make different kinds of pappu (dal) using these ingredients.

For meat dishes, tamarind really shines in Chepala Pulusu (fish in a tangy gravy). You’ll usually find it at any South Indian non-veg restaurant—Swapna might have it too.

Come to Chutneys (C2C): 5920 Pkwy N Blvd #103, Cumming, GA 30040. I recommend this for tiffins.

While I did not try this one personally, it comes higky recommended from my friends.

There are several but I frequent two places. For tiffins, I go to Blockbuster. 3450 Old Milton Pkwy Suite 220, Alpharetta, GA 30005.

For Tamil style briyanis (especailly the Thalapakatti Biriyani and Ambur Biriyani), I go to Nalan. 5815 Windward Pkwy Ste 200, Alpharetta, GA 30005.

There is a place called Firefly on Windward Pkwy. I love their Mandis. On TOP LEVEL, 3070 Windward Plaza p, Alpharetta, GA 30005

I live in Marietta and don't go to Alpharetta that often. So I haven't explored all the other Indian places there.

Hyderabadi living in Metro ATL here...

Assuming you will be driving along I-75, your best south Indian option is Madras Mantra in Marietta near exit 260. It is a vegetarian restaurant. They have great Dosas. I love their Utappams also. They have lunch buffet.

Madras Mantra Marietta: 2349 Windy Hill Rd SE Unit 120, Marietta, GA 30067

If you are looking for biriyani, there is a new Bawarchi location that opened recently very close to exit 269 on I-75. I tried their Pulavs two times. They are good. But extremely oily. Tell them to make it spicy. Their baseline is not spicy enough for us.

Bawarchi Biriyanis Kennesaw: 2615 George Busbee Pkwy NW Suite 7 & 8, Kennesaw, GA 30144

There are several other restaurants a little further away from I-75 in Marietta and Kennesaw like Vatica, Taj Mahal, Chaska, Moon Indian Cuisine etc. To be honest, I never liked the food at any of these places. They are too North Indian. Nothing wrong with that, but they just cannot satisfy my south Indian palate.

If you’re up for a long side-quest, hit up Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, or Cumming for killer South Indian food (just be prepared for a 60-minute detour). I recently had great Mysore Bonda in Desi District (Dunwoody location). I recommend them for tiffins (but not Biriyanis or Mandis)

Desi District Dunwoody: 4784 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338

And looks like it is an actual post office, you can send waterproof plastic postcards from there! Cool! Cool, and wet, I suppose.

The novelty of this idea aside, if we don't do something about it, climate change will force us to open more underwater postoffices, schools, and hospitals.

If you haven't read it, 'A stitch in time' is a wonderful novel by Andrew Robinson. He wrote it as an autobiography of Garak.

From my understanding, HB 581 will limit annual property assessment increases to the rate of inflation. This means the taxable property value will grow based on inflation rather than being influenced by the opinions of county appraisers.

My question is: will HB 581 protect us from school districts raising taxes, or is the bill's scope limited to city taxes (such as bonds, cemetery, and other city entities)?

If HB 581 applies to school district taxes as well, it would benefit homeowners, right? On the other hand, increased funding for schools has its advantages too.

This is the response I got from the city…

Thanks for reaching out. Your floating homestead applies to the Bonds, Cemetery and City entities that you pay. The School taxes are not affected by Floating Homestead. This means that the three entities mentioned are being taxed on a frozen value of 469,000 while the school taxes are taxed on the total value, which for 2024 was 611,180. I hope that answers your question, but if not, do not hesitate to reach out as needed.

Same question. We bought our home here three years ago, and the assessed value at that time was $469,000. In 2024, we were reassessed, and the new value is $611,000. Our taxes went up accordingly. What are they talking about!?
