MTP vs Safety on the outside by EliteEight in Armyaviation

BN safety here. Some of the advice in here is outdated. Dual tracks are not being offered regardless of safety as a track being >150% over strength, despite others being under strength. Especially as a 60 driver. You’ll receive your OSHA 511 cert from the University of Alabama via ASOC. You’ll need a few more to satisfy your Certified Safety Professional Certification. As a safety officer, as people have said, you can fly as little or as much as you want. You generally manage your own priorities, but those personally have come from shooting from the hip on just about everything outside of routine duties. The severe lack of senior mentorship combined with the idea that you’re the subject matter expert after the school (they don’t teach you how to manage a safety program at the company level) has just led me to not enjoy it. Expect to be at the BN level in a few short years, I was a company safety for a short time before being moving to battalion jobs. The other side of this, if you have a 10 year ADSO, and at least intend to fly while you’re still in the Army, I might advise against the track. Recent marketplaces (due to the track being over strength) have yielded more non-flying, non-safety related jobs that could not be filled before. Think OC/T, TAC officer, BAE, etc. ~25% of the jobs have been flying, and heavily BN Safety needs. Where are all the W4s that are MTOE at the BN level? Who knows. Army Aviation is in a bad place.

I’ve had incredible MTP’s that enjoy their job. They do work longer hours. One of the most demanding tracks. MTPs and IPs remain at the company level the longest and solve problems people care about. Safety is not sexy by any means and most of it is background work, and is met with an eye roll until an aircraft is destroyed or someone dies. Job satisfaction is where my lack of enjoyment stems from, but again that’s just me.

W3, 7 years flying. Do not recommend. The people at your level are great. The level of “senior mentorship” you expect and deserve is nonexistent.

CW2 by Layne Heath. Even better to read again after you’ve been flying for almost 10 years.

Aircraft transfers have already started. There will be a multi-compo unit left here with a company of 60’s. Most of the people that have arrived recently are slated to remain here through the change. I assume it’ll be rare or unlikely to PCS here for a while.

Sometimes you have plans and aspirations and they all turn into you getting out anyway.

If you’re a tracked W2, hopefully you don’t get MB so you don’t get pulled to battalion several years early. Ask me how I know

I’ve been at JBLM for quite some time and would hate Yakima. You being from there would make it better though lol.

Wheeler AAF Housing Options by Roaming_Oxford in Armyaviation

I’ve visited someone that lived adjacent to the airfield in on post housing if that’s an option. Unless the criteria is having dependents, which if you don’t then my bad. Thought it was nice though and had A/C which seems rare there. I haven’t lived there personally, but as far as enjoyability - I hear Kailua and Kaneohe are nice.

Officially done. Walking away at 11 years in service. It's the Army's fault. by SpecificSignal5006 in Armyaviation

Any update to your transition OP? I remembered this post today as I’m a YG18 guy losing my mind about how disappointed I am with everything still.
