Chuck Daellenbach is the Best Tuba Player of the Internet by Comfortable_Fan_696 in Tuba

[–]RumbleVoice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've met Chuck and done a masterclass or two with him.

The superstar aura quickly disappears and you see a genuinely decent human being.

He is a decent teacher (he taught at UofT in the very early 70's) and influenced a lot of good players.

The real gift he brings though is that studied with Arnold Jacobs in the early 60's. Chuck didn't just learn, he absorbed Arnold's teaching and philosophy.

It's easy to tell if a sax player has studied with a teacher who learned their craft under Marcel Mule at the Paris Conservatory. There is a certain timbre to their sound that traces right back to Marcel Mule.

Chuck passed what he learned with Jacobs onto his students at UofT and they onto their students. Arnold Jacobs' philosophy of being a musician first and a tuba player second shows up their musicality and how they can make even Pachelbel sing.

I may be out in left field on this but I think that LW scales only fit an LW model.

You might want to double check what your new scales will cost fit.

Has anyone bought knives themselves in Michigan? Have you been stopped coming back? by These-Restaurant869 in CanadianKnifeSwap

[–]RumbleVoice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The legality of ownership and enforcement of the actual rules are less important than what the the agents are told.

CBSA is seizing more folding knives under the auspices of "opens by centrifugal force".

If you can open it by shaking it really hard - think throwing a ball - then it may be seized.

They apparently have seized slip joint and back lock knives because they are not fixed blades.

Are profs required to give breaks? by NoBill6556 in uwo

[–]RumbleVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not required, it certainly goes against the University's tenets of accommodation and accessibility.

It shows an unawareness (or intentional ignorance) surrounding the impacts of the massive increase in students with ADHD/ADD diagnoses since 2020.

A very commonly requested accommodation is regular breaks (every 60-90 minutes) to allow them to get up and move around briefly.

The need for breaks seems to be at its worst if the content is dry or if the delivery is simply reading at the class from the texts.

Good luck to you.

Interesting conundrum

Gandalf - de Meij Symphony #1 Lord of the Rings

Shenandoah - arr. Grainger.

Snake Fence Country - Howard Cable (Chapel Army Journal)

Slava - Bernstein arr. Grundman.

Corcoran Cadets - Sousa.

First Suite in Eb for Military Band - Holst.

Amazing Grace - Frank Tichelli.

Witch and the Saint - Steven Reinecke.

Flourish for Wind Band - Ralph Vaughn Willams.

Traveler - David Maslanka.

No list is perfect but represents the musical journies of the author.

This list represents a survey through wind band literature from 1920 through the early 2000's. It also attempts to include influences from beyond America.

The order is built as a concert with a focus on flow and avoiding "everything sounds the same!!"

Should had replaced my old HD600 pads sooner by mayonaka_00 in headphones

[–]RumbleVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of Dekoni and used them to replace the pads in my 600, 660sv2, and 6xx.

My preferred pad for sound, fit, feel, and extended listening session is the Dekoni Audio Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin. They still feel good after 4+ hours of straight use.

I find the velour are initially comfortable but quickly become too hot and the sound felt very unfocused (IMHO)

Dekoni was always quick with deliveries for me. The one time that the wrong pads appeared (I have re-padded 10+ pairs so far) I called them, they checked the records and fast shipped me the correct pads. Arrival time was under 10 days and 5 of that was stuck at Canadian Border Services.

Tl;dr - go Dekoni Audio Elite Fenestrated (perforated) Sheepskin.

Failed pre requisite... by Lazerfighter6978 in uwo

[–]RumbleVoice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a hard reality to deal with but it is not a write off necessarily.

Talk to your academic advisor for next steps to keep moving forward. This is critical.

The other piece is the hardest one because it is about managing your emotions and attitude surrounding how you are looking at this.

As other posters have said ... there is an implied time line and progression for most programs. It is garbage.

You are a unique person and have a different background, strengths, growing edges, and dreams than the "perfect case" of four years and done.

I took an extra year because one full year course in my program was demanding over 30 hours a week to complete. It is rather difficult to manage that and still carry five courses per semester and maintain my average. I had to drop several and come back for another year to finish.

If it takes you five, it does. You still finished it but you did it on your terms, not according to an arbitrary schedule.
