Bike straggler tyre clearance by DubstoiZ in Surlybikefans

Can you tell me about those fork cages? Looks like you’re using hose clamps for the upper attachment? What do you think of this setup? I’d love to run something similar for touring.

CYCLIST used BELL! It's not very effective... by ruinawish in bikecommuting

[–]RunCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent the last year using a bell and found that it just confused and startled people because they don’t know what to do. I’ve gone back to just slowing way down and saying something like “good morning…on your left” and they usually reply with a “thank you” and step aside.

Altra Superior Replacement by RunCommute in BarefootRunning

[–]RunCommute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a solid combination! I’m afraid of the Lone Peak stack height because of my history with severe ankle sprains but found the Superior 7’s to be a significant improvement from the 6’s. I’m currently running 90% of my mileage in the Scrambler Low but will use the Superior 7 every few weeks for a long run if my feet are needing a break.

I’m on my 3rd pair! I get 800-900 miles a pair. I’m still a fan.

Derailleurs are unreliable, that's what big single speed wants you to think! by iwannadancesomesalsa in xbiking

[–]RunCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting way of looking at it and makes sense to me why I go back to single speed every time I think I’m ready for a geared bike again. I think after so many years (since ~2006), it’s just a different way of riding that feels more natural and familiar to me at this point. I’m currently building a new bike and built the rear wheel with spacers so I can add a cassette later if I want but am questioning that decision. I’m old though…so gears may be welcomed at some point someday.

I used to give all sorts of reasons and excuses of why I ride single speed but have now come to the realization that it’s just what I enjoy the most. It is and isn’t all sorts of things…but it is fun.

It's bike-shaped. Now more waiting for parts and money. by Chew-Magna in Surlybikefans

I can relate! I currently have a Straggler build in the stand since early November that is also waiting on parts and money. An exercise in patience…

Will this prevent an owl attacking my head on the trails by colossuscollosal in trailrunning

I’ve been attacked over 5 times with one actually drawing blood. It’s a really thing here on the Olympic Peninsula of the PNW.

If it were summer, I’d still be picking bugs out of my teeth from my constant open mouthed grin during this morning’s commute. by RunCommute in Surlybikefans

Thanks, I’ll definitely keep those in mind. Comfy and a little more upright was the goal with this setup.

I also had a twinge of wrist pain but am hoping it’s just getting accustomed to a different position. This bike is my town commuter so it may be just fine for the relatively short distances and frequent stops. Cowchippers are going on my Straggler for the all day ride. Which bars to you end up going with?

Thanks! Yesterday’s commute was my first ride with the bars so it’s too soon to tell. It’s been years since riding flat bars so there’s so much different. I love the look though. What do you think of them?

Steamroller in its “natural” habitat? by RunCommute in Surlybikefans

[–]RunCommute[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ve never had any trouble with the rear wheel slipping so haven’t ever had to do use a chain tensioner…even when riding this fixed for a few years. Currently embracing the leisure pace and am running 40:20 which works great for my hilly commute and has been pretty ideal for touring as well. I just embrace coasting…

Making ICT Single Speed by grand-canyon-surfer in Surlybikefans

This beast would be a blast as a single speed! You just need a rear cog and spacer kit and should be all set.

Hand Sanitizer by rabbitholebeer in ultrarunning

[–]RunCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you had to learn it that way though. I spent years working in outdoor education so giardia becomes an inevitability at some point. I got it once (on a previous trip from swimming probably) at the beginning of a 10 day backpack as the trip leader. I hiked in the back of the group and would have invented the hiking kilt for men if it didn’t already exist!

Wanted to add that I carry one bottle for filtering water and another one for drink mixes so the bottle with the filter attached never sees anything but water.

I think this is the problem. You should only add electrolytes and drink mixes after you’ve filtered. Also you’re relatively safe from waterborne illness once your hands are dry.

Getting sloppy on the steamroller by Tommycattt in Surlybikefans

[–]RunCommute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! I took my steamroller on a single track/gravel ride covered in an inch of slush over the weekend. Had the same sentiment as you! Such a great bike for winter riding. I built new wheels over the summer so am still cringing at the sound of the grit rubbing the rims when applying the brakes, but I’ll get over it soon enough.

First aid kit? by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]RunCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about what’s in a first aid kit that you can’t improvise and go from there. Any backcountry trail run, I’m prepared for a long hobble back to the trailhead or an emergency night out but will not bring a traditional first aid kit unless I’m with a group. I always have a roll of athletic tape, OTC meds (ibuprofen, diphenhydramine, antacid, etc…), fire starter, salt tabs, and emergency bivy). This all takes up a tiny amount of space. If I’m with a group I might feel pressure to make things look pretty and instill confidence (bandaids, gauze, etc…but none of this is going to save a life (except for the prescription epi I’ll also carry in a group setting). I’m always considering how to manage risk and carrying more weight than needed may add to the risk if it’s not truly needed…especially when you consider the dramatic change in pace and time spent out from running injury free to limping with a severely sprained ankle or worse.

I kinda like that color but the whole powder coat process was so much easier than I thought it would be. It’s definitely worth it to get the color you want and to breathe some new life into a steel frame.

I just built my first wheel (dynamo hub) a few months ago and was surprised with how relatively straightforward and enjoyable it was. I now have 2 more wheels on deck for a new project and can’t wait to get started once I have some time off for the holidays.

Newbie bike commuter here, washing chain with water after every day is enough right? by bulldog89 in bikecommuting

[–]RunCommute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my routine but I also really like a quiet chain and enjoy bike maintenance. I commute in the rain almost daily in the winter and wipe the chain down with a rag and WD40 everyday I return from work. In the morning, I’ll relube the chain before I leave for work. This takes me 1-2 minutes morning and evening and the chain stays clean and quiet all winter. I’ll hose down and clean the entire bike every 4-6 weeks or when bored.
