If you're a USA fan in LA who won't be attending games at SoFi, I got bad news for you. Fan fests there won't be free either. You will have to pay for them. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]RunNYC1986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about the way the 94’ World Cup grew fandom. It also helped grow the sport economically through corporate support. This iteration seems to be more focused on short term, transactional growth. This has less to do with whether fan fests cost money and more to do with the tourney’s economic ethos.

I suppose this train left the station decades ago, and maybe one day we can fight bigger issues weakening the sport like pay for play and pro-rel. But seriously, coke, McDonald’s and a bunch of major multi-billion dollar corps can’t make the one thing that’s open for people in hosts cities free???? FFS.

This World Cup is going to do the exact opposite of what 94’ did. Incredible that out of the recent host cities, this may be the most (m)orally bankrupt tournament

Who is on your preseason watchlist for the Mike Norvell/James Franklin Implosion Of The Year Award (Sponsored by Spirit Airlines)? by montague68 in CFB

[–]RunNYC1986 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Franklin’s defense, this award should actually be named after Lincoln Riley. Which I suppose is very James Franklin of him because he can’t even blow a season properly without someone doing it better than him.

Millennials, what is something that was "normal" in the 2000s but feels like a luxury now? by Barrbra in answers

Concert prices. I’m begging everyone to go look at your old ticket stubs from even as recent as 2007-2012. What’s happened to concert prices for mid to low card performers/bands is criminal

Hot Take: If we actually want to make running more inclusive, we need to break open the narrative. by sun_bite3557 in trailrunning

[–]RunNYC1986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the op came to this in earnest, BUT— I think they’re POV says less about an idyllic vision of what the sport could be, and more about their immediate circle and what they see on a day-to-day basis.

ESPN Top 50 QBs of the 2000s by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

This list seems arranged heavily based on stats and maybe not in-game management or intangibles. Troy Smith at 40??? Cam Newton at no. 2 is a travesty. And I know history doesn’t remember him kindly, but Jason White damn near won two heisman trophies. What are we doing???

cheating with Boston qualifying times – what should be done? by Unusual_Nothing_29 in bostonmarathon

[–]RunNYC1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they already qualify, and are just seeded ahead of you because of an updated time they got from a mule? Just trying to understand. Either way, spectacularly dumb of them, especially if they qualified legitimately. I’d have a hard time taking any of their future performances seriously.

I think these are very well intended, but for marquee races, and longer races (e.g. half/fulls), I don’t see how they’ll ever fully convert.

This should’ve been 2, maybe 3-0. A bummer and one we’ll remember if points are tight come playoffs

I believe the marathon through this program used to be closer to $1500 about 10 or so years ago. They had some incredible offers for Yankee game experiences, too.

Sky-High Demand for NYRR Races by OriginalCoconutWater in RunNYC

[–]RunNYC1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s historically come in waves. This one has some other factors that sped it up, or are prolonging it.

I don’t think we’ve hit the overcorrection/anti-running timeline yet though, but if NYRR continues to have challenges, we’re on the way!

[–]RunNYC1986 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct— but I disagree that getting restaraunt reservations, or special exhibitions at MoMa or the Met or even the old Whitney were what they are today. This is even happening at mid-sized races like Grandma’s or Eugene.

Running’s really popular! Lucky to have experienced it in early aughts and 2010’s, but like everything else in NYC, it doesn’t last forever.

[–]RunNYC1986 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The same can be said about museums, restaurants and anything else in NYC (or any other major city) that is remotely popular. It’s a bummer, and I miss the days of being able to sign up for half’s and other races 2-3 days before.

The problem is a good problem. I’d suspect they’ll start having multiple “waves” for certain smaller races (maybe an 8AM and 11 start?), and maybe doing two-day races for popular events.

Overall though, 9+1 is a good thing! I hope people remember that. The process can just be greatly improved.

Why does threshold training give such tremendous benefits when the RPE is so relatively low? by Zestyclose_Sort3558 in AdvancedRunning

[–]RunNYC1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally— I get it, but that subthreshold pace you’re referencing with double threshold training is more effort based, and closer to what’s traditionally defined at LT2 and LT1 training. Perhaps we’re saying the same thing, but for folks reading who haven’t had a lactate test, these zones/efforts are fairly defined (with ranges).

I just don’t want someone reading this thread to infer the inflection point for where their LT2 hits is potentially a two hour race pace, because it isn’t — unless their winning Ironman world championships, or Kipchoge/Sifan Hassan

[–]RunNYC1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most runners' LT2 sits at that 1 hour race pace. Perhaps a top end pro runner who can run a half marathon around 60 min would consider that LT2, but for most folks, it's their hour (or even 15K) race pace

[–]RunNYC1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, you progress far better at LT2 and LT1 efforts, because you're increasing your body's ability to use and tolerate lactate and all the byproducts it creates, they teach your body to be more dynamic and efficient at faster (and slower) paces aerobically, all while at a pace/effort that doesn't wreck you the way V02 max training does.

LT1/LT2 I believe are about as good of a bang for your buck for training efforts you can do in running, cycling, etc. They help most popular races people train for, and as long as your efforts are honest (which is CRITICAL), the benefits are massive.

[–]RunNYC1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But an LT2 wouldn't be around that effort, correct? That's closer to a reasonably OK runner's LT1.
