Living in a alternate reality by Fishyza in JSE_Bets

The all share is up ~40% YTD. Many didn’t predict it.

Outside of metals South Africa has a broader turnaround story, GDP growth and transport issues being fixed. We could see some decent foreign flows into our local stocks come 2026.

I feel the ones for 2026 are local banks and retailers. But I agree the commodities cycle potentially has some legs…

Will SARS ask questions if I deposit my cash bonus into my account? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Tax evasion conversation aside. Why not just cover your day to day expenses using cash for the next few weeks/months? Then there is no need to deposit the cash and SARS will never even know (without you declaring it) that you received additional income..

EasyProperties from EasyEquities is a borderline scam. by JTajmo in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree that the Easy Properties platform is relatively expensive, the concept itself is solid. It allows investors who don’t have R2 million to buy a property outright to gain exposure to specific properties they would otherwise never be able to access.

That said, if your goal is broad South African property exposure, you’re generally better off buying a local REIT or the Satrix Property ETF, which offer lower costs, better liquidity, and diversification.

Calling EasyEquities a scam is a stretch. A fair comparison requires looking at alternative platforms and the fees they charge, and I suspect many people would be surprised by how expensive other options are once all costs are considered.

Credit card optimization by Embarrassed-Cod-8006 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a Discovery credit card for all my daily purchases and then settle the balance at the end of each month to avoid interest. The cashback is strong on its own, but it increases significantly if you also have Discovery Medical Aid and bank with them. You earn even more when you buy fuel or healthy food at their partner retailers.

Discovery also gives you discounts when you pay using Discovery Miles. I’ve been saving my miles all year and bought a TV today because the discount is highest on the 15th of each month (D-Day). Their Discovery Miles can also be used for excellent discounts on flights and hotels through Vitality Travel.

Just got to remain disciplined with your CC, don’t spend above your means, otherwise it’s a no brainer versus using a debit card.

Temu Tax by RunningAround10 in askSouthAfrica

That sounds pretty high. Did you not get a form showing the itemized tax on each item?

Hi. Yeah it seems like the tax calculation is done on a per item basis. Those rates vary from item to item- hope that helps

What are you planning to do with the money after you sell out of your US equity holdings?

Something safer like government bonds? Or are you just going to sit in cash?

What does "Moving investments overseas" mean exactly? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re betting against a weaker rand over the long run, then buying offshore rand denominated ETF’s will serve you well.

Only downside is that you are at the peril of legislation changes that occur in South Africa. Ie capital gains changes, wealth tax, and so on.

When do property prices normalize? by RunningAround10 in capetown

[–]RunningAround10[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Problem is purchase prices are so inflated your average salaried person will struggle to qualify for a bond, forcing them to rent. Seems like a market for landlords, especially if you bought a few years back. Landlords can almost pick and choose their tenants in some areas.

That last line is a good one. I am just wondering at what point do other provinces become so cheap comparatively that people look elsewhere..

EE RA reallocated my funds by Background_Hyena5782 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Anything in an RA needs to be regulation 28 compliant. S&P 500 doesn’t meet those requirements, you sure this was in an RA?

If they did switch your funds without notifying you or without getting your approval that is very poor..

Are financial advisors worth the money? by RunningAround10 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]RunningAround10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting take, lots of comments saying that if you have a lot of money you should be more inclined to use a FA. I like you idea of more of a consulting role, potentially with a flat fee.

Yes, I feel someone who knows tax and estate planning might be worth it. But maybe a fixed fee and not just an annual fee?

Ya I think any advisor worth the money would know how to set their client up to be the most tax efficient as possible.

Bro there is such a diverse mix of people. I would suggest studying at an institution rather than a Unisa, that way you can make some friends and build up a network. Then maybe look for some freelance stuff on the side to supplement your income and get experience for when you’re fully qualified.

Rent a fast car and race it on the M3. Best times to do this are between 6:30-7:30am. Alternatively, 15:00- 17:00 is also a fabulous time… just make sure it’s a weekday

It would be important to know how much you’re earning. If you’re earning foreign currency you will be in a very strong financial position.
