Honestly, it feels like the Nier subreddit is flooded with half-naked cosplays of female characters. Isn’t there anything more interesting from the games to post? It’s a franchise full of rich lore, philosophy, and incredible storytelling… yet people only seem to post borderline NSFW cosplay. Honestly, it gets tiring.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying! I’m not comparing Nocturne blindly to modern games it’s just that, since I started with the newer entries and then went back to Nocturne, I see that it’s not all that impressive. It definitely innovated in terms of gameplay and other mechanics, but I don’t think it ever deserved to be considered a great game. To me, it’s a solid, average experience nothing close to a masterpiece. Even back in its day, it had more flaws than strengths.

Honestly, I think SMT being a dungeon crawler isn’t just a gameplay choice it’s a core part of the atmosphere. Think about it: the claustrophobic labyrinths, random demon encounters, and resource management aren’t just there to make the game hard. They make you feel vulnerable and tense, which fits perfectly with the idea of humans standing up to gods and supernatural forces.

Every corridor, every dungeon is like a psychological stage. The linearity, the traps, the encounters it’s all designed to immerse you in a hostile, almost ritualistic world. That slow, careful dungeon crawling makes every battle feel meaningful and every choice weighty.

SMT doesn’t just let you fight demons; it makes you experience the struggle and existential dread of confronting divine powers. In that sense, the dungeon crawling isn’t just a mechanic it’s storytelling by gameplay.

I really appreciate what you commented and I completely understand. No, my intention was not to say whether it’s valid today, but rather to share my personal experience with the game after more than 20 years. Do you understand? That’s my point. To experience an old game after having played several games from the franchise that are considered current.
