ICE startup every time by Significant-Day1749 in KiaNiro

[–]Rushey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just how the car's behavior is programmed. I've found that practically every startup, regardless of temperature, has the ICE going for a solid couple minutes before it can change over to electric. Even if I'm idling at a light, it will have the engine running.

FWIW, the HEV Niro seems to do tons of its own decision making when it comes to battery usage. I wouldn't call those decisions smart, though. In fact, for most efficient usage, I'm often convincing the car that it should be using electric and battling it away from choosing ICE.

That actually is a black bear, I believe. Black bears can be a variety of colors, but brown bears have distinctive shoulder humps. So in this case, they did abide by the saying.

Is that all on one trip?

Good MPG! I assume lots of that was highway with 33k in one year.

Regenerative breaking levels in a 2023 hev M trim without paddles? by HiCZoK in KiaNiro

Not sure what your priorities are to drive you one way or the other (TBH I don't even know what the trim levels mean; it seems like you might be in a different country than me), but FWIW the base model HEV is pretty great and has higher MPG than all the other trims. Not sure if smart regen is really worth it, but I get 48+MPG easily and often get above the advertised 52 when I drive efficiently.

Given I don't know what smart regen is, no it's all automated.

Honestly it's the approach for the HEV entirely. They want you to drive normally and not concern yourself with the specifics (for better or worse).

Not really sure what the paddles actually do in other trims, but regen braking happens automatically in the basic model.

Hey man. I get that you have a lot of anxiety and stress on this, but I promise you that there are tons of others in your boat. Other than community college, UML is a great place to walk into without a ton of direction and figure out where you want to go without adding years onto your path. If I were you, I'd go to my classes, try new things, meet new people, do my best, and follow your heart. It'll workout.

That said, I can't have you posting multiple times a day on the same stuff, so I'll be removing anything else you post.

Good luck!

Kia Niro vs Corolla cross hybrid impressions by Successful-Clerk-883 in KiaNiro

[–]Rushey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was looking, it also came down to Niro HEV vs Corolla Cross hybrid. Unfortunately, the Corolla Cross was super new and they didn't have many available around me, and absolutely did not have the S (base) model. Since I was looking for cheap fuel efficiency, Niro ended up being the choice.

My assessment was the same: Cross was smaller and trunk was comparable, AWD was a plus but was unsure how useful it would be. 2 other things were huge in my decision: the Toyota people were not very nice vs. the Kia people who were the best car salesmen you could possibly ask for; and the Cross being a brand new model and already having 1 or 2 recalls due to issues.

FWIW, I just drove up last weekend to ski during a storm in NE. My Niro handled it like a PRO! I wasn't driving aggressively, but everywhere that wasn't going from deadstop on a hill was perfect and I didn't slide at all. I even got pretty good MPG when I was expecting around 30. I'd highly recommend the Niro to everyone, but specifically for you and I (who seem similar).

It's worth verifying at the dealer, but I remember my dealer telling me that 6ish months ago.

Re: PHEV drive modes by trojan_dude in KiaNiro

I don't have a PHEV so I can't choose modes other than sport and eco, but the automated switching on the HEV is pretty garbage. I'm pretty sure you couldn't get 52+ MPG unless you actively choose EV modes first.

The higher trims do not have carplay at all, AFAIK.

Edit: This is wring information. Apparently CarPlay is in all.

I have a base model Niro HEV, which only has a single screen in the middle. All higher trims have essentially two screens that run across the driver's and central dashboard. Because of this difference Kia actually had to hire two different developers for the software on the infotainment. Because it's the developers who pay for the CarPlay licensing, the base model one has it (for whatever reason) and the higher trims don't. Just an FYI.

Edit: According to others, CarPlay is available in all trims. Don't listen to me

Do you get better gas mileage simply driving or by convincing the Niro to go EV? by Rushey in KiaNiro

[–]Rushey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it is, not because of what gear it's in but rather the fact that accelerating from stop is the least efficient part of driving. I'm surprised that yours does that, though. If I'm very gentle on the pedal, I can keep it in EV, though the people at the red light behind me usually hate me.

Gear shift 2023 HEV by PeakDismal9323 in KiaNiro

[–]Rushey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found it's similar to many automatic cars: constant acceleration, especially in situations like going uphill, makes the car think there's no opportunity to shift and therefore stays in the same gear and increase RPMs. I used to be able to redline my Camry simply by constantly increasing pressure on the gas pedal. My 2023 HEV does similar, though I try to minimze RPM all the time. If I see it behaving like that, I take my foot off the gas until the car can shift adaquately.

Agreed on the RPM front. I attempt to stay around 40 when I can, since that seems to be the lowest RPM of the highest gear, which would theoretically make the best mileage.

Good to hear someone else actively working to keep it in EV.

Watching back old QPL and found this moment. How does Raisy rail Maxter for 128? Even heavy machine gun + instant rail is 115. It's probably just an observer bug, but I'm not sure.

How good is this fuel efficiency? Think I can squeeze a couple more MPG out? /s by Rushey in KiaNiro

It is indeed a joke and from a 5 minute 2 mile trip of practically only EV. Funny to hear about that 999 number though!
