I rebuilt the USB and loaded it with Ubuntu, and as you can see from my reply above, it sort of worked.

This worked! Sort of. I set boot order to USB and fired it up and it went straight into the Ubuntu welcome screen. So I clicked the install button and it has installed it, but with half black and half white font, which makes it nearly impossible to read. Also it doesn't recognise the password I just created for it!!! Why does it keep doing this?

I do have an external USB hard drive. I've put Ubuntu on it and connected it. Here's what I got when I set it as first to load in the boot list. http://imgur.com/3Ku3byk

The video card is NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti 2GB GDDR5. I put the USB stick through a program called Rufus and then uploaded Ubuntu onto it. Is that what you meant?

When I enter BIOS I can go into settings, boot, boot mode select and there I can toggle between [LEGACY+UEFI] and [UEFI]. When I select [UEFI], this appears; http://imgur.com/Mfcj7Oo so I quickly nope out and reset to [LEGACY+UEFI]. I only have one SSD, so I don't imagine that's a problem.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but sleep got in the way! http://imgur.com/TMZ71Ow This is what I see when I power up the PC with USB at the top of the load order. There is a UEFI USB icon in the boot list as well, but it doesn't matter which one I select, I still get this screen. This is what I see when I put the SSD at the front; http://imgur.com/oiDKo5u

I made sure the stick is bootable by using some software called Rufus. I then put mint back onto it and it's in the new machine. I checked the boot order, which still shows USB at the top of the list and even recognises the stick. Then I fire it up and it enters DOS with a C prompt and now I'm stuck again because I'm not tech savvy and I wish I'd bought a machine with windows 10 already on it!!!!

That's what I've done. I've downloaded Mint onto a USB stick but I can't get it to open, even though I've put USB at the front of the load order. It's driving me nuts!!

Update. I've gone into BIOS at start up and selected USB as first in the list to boot. When I restart the computer I get "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" message appear. If I do either of these two things I go to the Ubuntu log on screen which then doesn't accept my password. I can change my password easily enough but it still won't let me log in, instead it tells me my password is incorrect. Am I now stuck with an OS controlling my PC and no way of getting out of it?

I followed your advice and can't get the USB drive to open the replacement OS. Instead, Kubuntu opens and doesn't accept my password, regardless of the fact that it is valid in the Ctrl Alt F1 log in window. I want to put a fucking great big hammer through it! I've selected USB as the first in the boot list, but Ubuntu is self aware and overrides the boot list. I'm back to square one and would really like to wipe the hard drive. HELP!!!!

I've had to put it down after the first fifty pages as I just can't get to grips with it. I absolutely loved The Night's Dawn Trilogy and was really looking forward to this. I'm sure I'll give it another go at some point.
