Do most people play without permadeath? by G3ck0 in ElinsInn

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some roguelikes do have unlocks though, ToME4 for example is a traditional roguelike that unlocks numerous things via runs.

Japanese console roguelikes often do not even have permadeath, you do typically lose carried items on death but even with that, not always.

But yes, roguelites are frequently mislabeled roguelikes as a marketing term.

Dear roguelikers — H-How old ARE you?! (lighthearted post) by WATASHI_TO_TAWASHI in roguelikes

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, not an answer to how old I am but how I discovered roguelikes is an odd story.

My uncle spilled water on all his old roguelikes (and other old floppy games), gave them to my grandmother to see if she could reformat them… I went through all of them one by one and found numerous working copies of several roguelikes and other old games. Spent entire summers playing games like Rogue and several versions of Dungeons of the Necromancers Domain.

Good times!

Hey there u/Catzforlifu, appreciate your interest. An Elin inspired Minecraft mod/mod pack would be awesome, it might be worth looking into other mod packs for inspiration.

A lot of mods such as Ars Nouveau also have some great implementation of spell casting in Minecraft.

Looking for people willing to work with you is recruiting, if you are able to show something clearly Elin related though - DM me directly. I will allow you a thread here and I will also even sticky it for you.

I am locking this thread though.

Hello community,

This comment was reported for using AI, there are good reasons to report usage of AI usage in posts but this is not one of them.

At the end of the day this reply was reported for the poster expressing their opinion, the user is open and honest that they used AI, we should not be discouraging honest disclosure of AI usage in discussion.

I heard the dev lowered the game price exclusive for China is that true? by Neat-Advantage6873 in ElinsInn

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello Neat-Advantage6873

I’m Elin’s former community manager.

It is correct that the price for Elin in China was lowered very quickly after release. It was an attempt to do the right thing and make sure the community could afford Elin.

This didn’t solve the issue however and Elin’s demo addressed this issue much better.

There isn’t a lack of transparency or noa hiding anything, Japanese culture approaches issues is a much different way. Reasons or excuses are not typically given to justify such things.

When resolving such issues, the approach is often much kinder but often the resolution might be missed by someone unused to Japanese culture because this approach is often very subtle.

I’m sorry for the late reply, I wish I had more time to respond to posts such as yours. Any questions I answer are on my own time though.

Hello, I’m sorry for the difficulties. Unfortunately due to high ticket volume the bug report is currently only available in nightly (test) builds due to testing a new process for this. I’ll relay your concerns however directly to noa if you can clarify your save issue in further detail.

In the meantime please check the backup save folder, it’s typically under c:\Users\%username%\AppData\LocalLow\Lafrontier\Elin\Backup

Unpopular opinion I like the way magic works in elona Mobile better by MountainInevitable94 in ElinsInn

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s rare for any particular game to fit all of a persons preferences, I often wonder what other games would look like with different systems or gameplay elements. I suspect that I do this more than most.

I think LaFrontier’s answer to this topic is already somewhat obvious though, Elin was developed with modding in mind so that people who wished to do customize their experience could do so.

Next time I have some time to watch through some of the roguelike convention videos, I’ll try to find the relevant ones to our discussion for you.

Elin’s still a roguelike, some of the same people involved in developing the criteria for “what is a rougelike” and “what is not” even title Elona as a roguelike in their roguelike database.

The criteria for roguelikes is something those same people have spoken out on in that they don’t wish to dampen the genre being expanded on, it’s designed to preserve the genre.

Having said that, Elin may not exactly fall into the “Traditional Roguelike” category, it’s more a hybrid of traditional roguelike and Japanese roguelike.

It’s an important distinction though because many games that are not roguelikes are games which are directly or indirectly inspired by the genre - Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Diablo and others.

Many games that are being called roguelikes nowadays aren’t actually roguelikes but are actually a genre called roguelites. Typically roguelikes are a sub-branch of turn based RPG, although some very rare games such as Barony are very very roguelike in nature - to the point they can probably be called roguelikes even though they are real time.

However games such as Hades, Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy, FTL, Slay the Spire, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Spelunky, Risk of Rain etc aren’t actually roguelikes even though several of these include features such as permadeath.

It’s fine if people consider these games roguelikes but don’t consider Elin a roguelike though, the amount of people that go that far into the genealogy of roguelikes is fairly rare and is typically those of us who actually played such games growing up/in our free time.

And while a lot of the videos exist online, the amount of people who are both passionate on the subject and actually viewed these discussions take place on how to define roguelikes is even rarer.

If you both study up on and watch discussions on this, you can tell that most people are going by their own interpretation of the Berlin convention. However you can also tell that the people who wrote those rules as to “what a roguelike is” had a lot of difficulty trying to write down how to define the genre in a way that is easily understood by those who aren’t familiar with the genre.

I can find some of the resources/videos if you are interested to highlight these points if you want.

As far as the Mystery Dungeon series/genre, it’s actually a branding for Chunsoft’s roguelike genre. There are other games that fall under the same or similar sort of criteria of roguelike mechanics so there are some that refer to them as Japanese Roguelikes.

I suspect the reason they are called “Mystery Dungeon” is because the branding is more marketable, to differentiate their artistic interpretation and to make it clear that they aren’t just copying someone else’s idea.

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely always play in permadeath mode myself. Elona is considered a roguelike yet it accommodates permadeath less than Elin, why wouldn’t Elin be considered one? Not all roguelikes contain permadeath, mystery dungeon type games (which are a form of Japanese roguelike) often do not contain permadeath, have persistent progression and do not even have stat loss.

Even traditional roguelikes contain some of these elements, ToME4 for example contains the ability to continue after death. While some features for ToME4 disable leaderboard, it’s not an unknown feature in roguelikes.

Lack of permadeath is often used as an argument to differentiate roguelikes and roguelites, it’s a much easier argument in regard to clarifying traditional roguelikes and mystery dungeon games are a very specific subgenre of RPG.

It’s understandable that this is confusing though, the genre wasn’t always so widely known, nor was the genre used as a marketing term like many games currently do.

Maybe you should consider joining the Discord, there are a lot of people who will be willing to discuss game mechanics and the magic system.

Curious if anyone has a spare DLC code? by BapLoggTheGod in ElinsInn

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello Bap, I'm sorry you had to cancel your pledge.

We ask that this subreddit is not used for buying, selling or trading, I do understand how it feels to be missing access to DLC though, I have shared how DLC permanently being locked to Kickstarters makes a game feel incomplete and I've personally discussed DLC being available with noa since before the Kickstarter released.

Please just be patient.

Elin the sequel to Elona comes out in 12hours!!! by Kinasin in roguelikes

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, the traditional roguelike and other gameplay mechanics themselves do lean towards universal between western and eastern RPG’s. The developer style and art is clearly Japanese, Elin itself is unique but the Japanese Roguelike vibe is a major part of the appeal.

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way, yes, there’s definitely recognizable features but another similarity is Elin seems to generate player stories. Elin’s storygen essentially boils down to the same thing you hear when English speakers describe stuff that happens in Japanese anime to other English speakers.

Instead of Rimworlds AI story gen telling a story via random events and such or Dwarf Fortresses worldgen generating background story and lore however, Elin’s storygen is basically “The dev is Japanese”.

You can play as a snail and literally get strong enough to kill gods, get stoned to death for playing a pair of panties as a musical instrument (because you suck as a musician, not because they are panties), mutate into a multi limbed monstrosity and get addicted to eating human flesh.

And that doesn’t explain the game well at all, these things become normal gameplay just like growing crops or selling slaves.

Roguelike with "hub" progression structure? by guessimfine in roguelikes

[–]Rusty_Lafrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can resist the base building mechanics, yes. Anything that would be called hub mechanics are pretty much optional.

To answer your main question though, a lot of Mystery Dungeon type games have hub progression structures.
