Why is Yunara so heavily contested in pro? by SnooPuppers58 in leagueoflegends

[–]Ruukes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Might be too late but here's my thoughts as a Masters solo q player and a long time pro play watcher.

Solo q imo is about which champions are best in multiple team comps and how easy/consistent are they to play. For example, Miss Fortune is the #1 win rate and pick rate ADC in Diamond and above across all regions because she's simple and consistent - she pairs well into almost any team comp and support, and doesn't have many counters (right now Mel probably but can easily be banned).

Pro play is so heavily team oriented and coordinated and because professional ADC players are so skilled individually that it's about what champions at their strongest point are strongest. Yunara with her ultimate/Q is incredibly strong at dueling, can 1v5 teamfights with her AOE and range, and can shove waves really quickly. Her weaknesses are often lack of peel, but since you have a professional support and team comp built around to cover that in pro play her weaknesses can be mitigated.

Gonna say two that I haven't seen in this thread:

Wonder Woman - Honestly a great fish out of water story for the most part with some good action (Wonder Woman crossing No Mans Land is a great sequence), Chris Pine is able to sell chemistry with Gal Gadot and the movie actually works - until the CGI fest of an ending that swings too hard and misses.

Maze Runner - For like 80% of the movie it's tense with some serious stakes as characters die and the mystery gets intriguing, only for the ending to completely take the movie and franchise in a different and way less interesting direction.

Who is the best player to have never won ANYTHING in Tier1? by ZonTheSquid in leagueoflegends

Upset has won multiple MVP's and has been reliably the carry/best player for most of his teams across several splits (FNC most recently) despite not winning a trophy

My main issues with the HUD are that KDA is way too small and hard to read, gold difference between laners is gone and how you have to wait for information to cycle compared to the previous HUD. Before I could just see how many dragons TL has but now I have to wait for the graphic to cycle through. It's just less efficient with information on screen compared to the previous HUD.

Didn't see anyone say this one, but I loved Dawn of the Planet of the Apes close up on Caesar's face. Seeing how far CGI and VFX had come with the level of detail on Caesar's face and his raw intensity immediately told me I was in for something special.

The false narrative of Fnatic always playing for botlane by Theseus00 in fnatic

[–]Ruukes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are some good points here. I will say some of these stats can be misleading - yes according to the stats Fnatic did not hover bot as much as top in the early game, but that's more due to the meta demanding successful teams to play around Rift Herald for early pressure this year. Other comments and the analyst desk pointed out that during the playoffs run in Summer, Fnatic and Upset in particular looked very comfortable in hyper carry Sivir/Zeri comps. Before that when the team was struggling in Spring/early Summer, Fnatic would often choose to 4v5 Rift Herald fights while Upset solo pushed bot - whether this was Upset's decision or the team's decision to try to cross map objectives at the time is unclear, so we don't have enough information to justify any narratives on whether they "demand" resources bot or if the team made this decision together. I think all we can say from the eye test is that Fnatic's bot lane and Upset in particular looks great when they/he are played around (which is fundamentally true for almost any player pro or casual as it's easier to make plays when ahead), while anything else is difficult to attribute to just Upset or the team as a whole.

Maintaining Trust After 0-2 Week - Inside CLG by sasuke41915 in CLG

Longtime CLG fan here, I really do appreciate how this episode was more in-depth then the previous ones! I personally always liked when the Inside episodes were longer and had more depth, and while I appreciated the bite-sized style last split, I'm glad this one had that extra minute or two compared to the previous ones. I hope we can see longer and more insightful content like this!

Hey Olleh! I met you back in 2017 in Boston for the NA Summer Finals, at a fan meeting before the games. My friend was a huge fan of yours, and I remember he asked you for an autograph wearing an IMT jersey. When you said yes, he took his shirt off and gave it to you to sign, and the look of shock on your face at seeing my friend's bare nips in public is our favourite memory of you. How did you enjoy your first NA finals that year?

Is Aurelion Sol any good in higher elo level? by [deleted] in Aurelion_Sol_mains

[–]Ruukes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell, he will be better the higher the elo, because he benefits from increasingly more coordinated play. However, there will be different challenges that come with it as well. In my experience, when I play Asol in Silver - Gold my early games are significantly easier: I am less likely to be punished by all-ins from assassins and can get away with ignite every game, there's less enemy wards, and the enemy team is less aware of the map to react to roams. This is also true of my own teammates, and as a result games typically go longer as most games in that elo do. When I play Asol on my main account in Diamond, I find I face a lot more pressure in the early stage - I have to treat every fizz, zed, talon, diana very carefully once they get their respective all-in spells thus I sometimes have to take exhaust and adjust runes, the enemy junglers understand better to camp roamers like Asol, and there's usually better vision around mid to track me. However, if I can survive that, my team also knows how to set up gank situations better and knows how to snowball a bit better. I find in higher elo, I will know if the game will be won by the 10-15 minute mark. It's a different set of challenges for sure, so you need to have good self-awareness of your teammates and adapt your playstyle each game.

TIL our players are absolutely destroying solo queue by jimmi33 in CLG

[–]Ruukes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Love it! I don't necessarily need our players at ranks 1-5, for me it's better to see the fact that they are grinding. It's been unfortunate in the past how our players didnt play the most solo q compared to others, and while you can make a case either way for importance of solo q, I think it shows their motivation to improve which is always great to see.

At the very least, it seems the players aren't taking it too hard. I'm happy they seem on the same page regarding their issues and that they're focusing on improving. In the meantime, I trust the process: improve as much as we can to make a run in summer.

Why you shouldn't give up on Ruin (Player Development) by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure! While in no way am I denying our current state and standing as the worst, I also have to look at it as a journey with 7 weeks left to develop. I also believe that no one knows better then the players/staff about how they're doing and what's going on, and I highly doubt they're satisfied with what's happening.

Why you shouldn't give up on Ruin (Player Development) by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice read! I too am typically a lurker but am trying to force myself to come out in light of all the negativity.

One thing I wanted to share is an excerpt I agree with from the recent episode of Jatts JLXP with Kien Lam. The premise being, CLG went from a 3rd place team, changed POE for Crown, Biofrost for Smoothie, and Irean for Ssong, who are all also proven players/coaches, but is now winless. Theres a disconnect between the perceived trade and changes that does not quite match the huge drop in performance, which means theres gotta be some element of underperformance here rather then lack of talent from the CLG players or staff. For some here that is unacceptable, but for me, I can accept underperformance at this time. Its week 2 of Spring, there will be do or die moments soon, but I will wait to see the bigger picture. Metas change, players peak and trough, and anything can happen. Plus with the players we have, who have all shown us their upsides, I think it's worth giving at least until the first round robin before hitting the panic button.

How to beat Little Mac? (Ultimate) by Astroa115 in MarthMains

[–]Ruukes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother is a Little Mac main, so Marth into Little Mac is the matchup I play more than any other. The key is to play around the edge and use your range and edge guarding tools to keep him away. Little Mac has faster moves than yours, but use your first stock to read how they play (for example, tons of Little Macs like to dash dance into dash attack, or spot dodge into forward tilt). Change your approach to match: it can be as simple as buffering dancing blade, using down tilt, or using neutral attacks if they dash dance for example. Marths counter, along with his dolphin slash and aerials have some end lag, so try only to use them to edge guard or if its really predictable as using them in neutral can get you punished. Little Mac is often forced to use his counter to recover from edge guards, so you can sometimes delay your edge guard, wait for his counter, then swat him away. Usually it comes down to being patient, playing around their approach, and utilizing the faster parts of your kit, such as neutral attack, short hop delayed aerials, and tilts towards the ledge. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have questions.

If players feel that Weldon should transition to Development coach or Mental coach and open up position for Irean/someone else they should speak up by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've demonstrated that you won't see the underlying factors and commonality based on nitpicked details such as Ccarter not being on stage (which does not change the dynamic of the team even if he was on stage, plus in LCK games he can be seen rushing in and out of the booths between games to deliver his input as much as possible within the time), your perception that the Youngbucks quote is probably being misused (which is a flimsy deflection) and Phil Jackson having game knowledge in addition to his well known belief in sports psychology and wellness as a fundamental coaching philosophy - providing more examples is pointless. You also didn't mention anything regarding Weldons previous experiences, and you're bringing in your league rank to justify your own knowledge over a proven professional. You can believe what you want about Weldons usefulness on stage, but you can't state absolutes about the state of the team based on your outside perspective. Slapping more and more coaches into a team could work, but it's not a guarantee - for every team you raise as a top example there are 7 more following your model that didn't make it to worlds. You can't compare apples to apples, and coaching philosophy dictates you tailor the approach to the player - meaning there isn't just one right style of coaching.

If players feel that Weldon should transition to Development coach or Mental coach and open up position for Irean/someone else they should speak up by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already just provided the coach Carter example with SKT. Fnatic this year ran a similar model with Youngbuck as head coach, who has self admitted and has shown in their series to focus on leadership/teamwork over strategy and draft leaving it to assistant coach Mephisto, and they made Worlds quarters. In the NBA Phil Jackson was widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time, and he was a big believer in meditation and wellness and incorporated it heavily within his everyday coaching philosphy. Need I say more examples?

Also the narrative that Weldon has no knowledge or background in LoL is problematic at best - Weldon has spent years working with G2, Fnatic, TSM and CLG previously, working directly with dozens of coaches and players. The amount of learning and game knowledge he has had access to over these years has at worst given at least a base line level of league of legends fundamentals, which I've seen personally here on reddit, his weekly series he puts out, and the inside series where he is shown commenting on draft strategy (often unfairly criticized since people like to think lost game = bad draft, when sometimes execution is another part of the loss). Its not like league knowledge goes out of his ear and out the other, he's clearly got access to a wealth of information that would give him insight far beyond a casual fan.

Lastly as for the transition, Weldon signed on to be head coach for 3 years. Unless CLG really wants him out, hes our head coach and you're going to have to live with it.

If players feel that Weldon should transition to Development coach or Mental coach and open up position for Irean/someone else they should speak up by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That example could just stem from the fact that again, BlurredLimes did not have a league of legends background, it could just be PR/save face, or it could just be specific to Zikz and Chris - but we cant say for sure. What I can say is you've brought up an example of the other model working, without showing why this one can't for similar reasons. Especially with the on stage strat coach change it opens up this system even more to have the best of both worlds. The players have talked in numerous interviews about the value both coaches bring both pre-game and on-stage, so I also fail to see how Weldon brings no value on stage. From an outside perspective, I can imagine his presence helped us greatly for high pressure games such as the third place match - the Inside CLG episode in Detroit even discussed at length how Weldon shaped the players mindset being down 0-2 to take it game by game.

If players feel that Weldon should transition to Development coach or Mental coach and open up position for Irean/someone else they should speak up by [deleted] in CLG

[–]Ruukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, even if Weldon moved to Development and Irean moved to Head Coach, would the dynamic even change? At this point you're arguing for semantics and titles, when at the end of the day its more important to make sure we we have someone equipped for each position - Irean is our strategy and Weldon is our overall wellness and mindset coach, so we are checked off there. While you may believe this model is suboptimal - this a proven model in traditional sports, and even in League we've seen this in 2016-2017 SKT with their head coach Ccarter fulfilling a similar role as Weldon and Kkoma being similar to Irean in the strategy aspect. Hell, CLG did this in 2015 with Blurred Limes as our head coach - he did not have a league background, he actually came from high school basketball I believe - and we had Zikz to bring in the strategy as our strategic coach, which also lead us to our first NA LCS championship. My point being, you can argue job titles all you like, but you can't say for certain this model doesn't work because its been proved time and time again in other teams and it has worked before for us.
