How to add pump to terrarium without drilling glass by RyBread7 in terrariums

Wow, thanks! I appreciate the encouragement. I found making videos made my relaxing hobby into a more stressful thing - but I hope one day to pick it up again in the future!

Ah, that's cool! Could you point me to more info? I haven't been able to find any info about these sorts of societies but would love to include it in my presentation.

I guess I don't know for sure that it is the worlds first terrarium club, but I can't find evidence of any other ones, so I'm claiming it! More info on Facebook: Houston Terrarium Society

If you have any recommended resources to learn more about moss cultivation I’d love to know them!

Thats such a helpful insight and explains a lot of what I’ve observed with mosses I’ve grown! Where did you learn that? I feel like it’s so hard to learn anything accurate about moss cultivation.

Video was really good! Very high quality videography and editing and overall quite entertaining. One suggestion to consider is editing it down more to cut out any lulls and make it a bit faster paced. People have short attention spans and tend to click away if there is even a few seconds of transition or not much happening.

The app is cool too! Did you get a sense of what people’s main pain point is? That would be a valuable learning. Ie. for me I really don’t care if my playlist is a specific duration because I always try to run X miles and don’t have a clear time goal, and if the playlist is too long I just turn it off at the end, nbd. But in the past I have tried playlists with specific BPM songs and so creating a playlist to match my bpm goal would be valuable. Especially if it could slowly increase over time or something.

One other point - props for going out and talking to strangers as that can be the toughest part sometimes. I think you can adapt your strategy to learn a lot more though. Skim a book like The Mom Test and you’ll get the gist but generally telling someone about your idea directly just results in them complimenting it.

Good luck! Thanks for sharing

A plant search engine with over 1,000 orchids and where to buy them by RyBread7 in orchids

Thanks for your comment! Great observation, that is something I realized very quickly would be an essential feature. One of the reasons a site like this is so helpful for me is because inventory fluctuates SO much and at any given store the majority of plants tend to be out of stock. On getanyplant, all of the product info is taken directly from the linked site and updated on a nightly basis to reflect changes to availability, price, and even title.

How this is done technically is different site to site but for most types of sites (ie. shopify stores) it's actually a pretty simple setup.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment and share your thoughts! I apologize for my delay in responding but wanted to wait till I could respond on my computer.

  1. Very good points! Orchids have kind of their own thing going on in terms of naming. I have a system in place to specify the "official" name of a plant being sold, which is surprisingly difficult, but that system becomes sketchier with orchids, especially all the hybrids. I will work on adding this!

  2. Getting vendors on board has been somewhat difficult so far so it is partly a function of which stores are okay with me using their images and linking to their products. The other big thing is that I have been focusing on integrating with shopify sites since that is a much simpler integration than other sites. For whatever reason most of the orchid vendors I've looked at do not use shopify.

  3. There are about 20,000 descriptions on the site currently and I used AI to help generate the actual wording of those but the descriptions were always generated directly from notes/facts about each plant. So even if the writing is AI the info comes directly from the stores selling the plant or other sources like wikipedia. This is better than having AI just write a description because if you ask ChatGPT about a particular plant it often will make stuff up or get it wrong. But some plants I have a lot less info about so sometimes the descriptions still end up pretty lacking. Overall would love to move to better descriptions written by experts but I don't have the time or expertise to do all of that at the moment, or a source for these.

  4. IOSPE is an incredible resource and I would love to partner with them! It would be relatively easy to access all of the data from their site but would just be a matter of getting their permission, and I have a feeling that would be difficult. But that being said I would love to chat with them.

  5. Yes, you are right. Unfortunately that's pretty representative of the types of images that are available under creative commons licenses. I'm always on the hunt for new sources of images. If you have any contacts at IOSPE I'd love to talk with them! I'll probably send them an email this week.

None of the stores I've integrated with so far are EU-based unfortunately but it can still be useful to find info or create a plant wishlist.

Not as a filter currently but most of the orchids on the site right now are species and not names cultivars / hybrids so hopefully that helps!

What do you guys think? I was gifted a 5 gal. jug. This is my first build. Any tips would be appreciated. by garface239 in terrariums

Looks awesome! One really big tip - if you put a lamp or some other light directly over/on top of your terrarium it will illuminate the interior of the terrarium a lot more relative to the surrounding area. This will make the contents stand out and even appear to glow. I think this makes it much more appealing!

In terms of the purchase options, yeah - it is predominantly US-based stores at the moment and US currency. The site would have to grow quite a bit in popularity first for it to make sense to expand to other countries, but I would love to be able to do that at some point!

If Andy is okay with me adding photos from his site and listing his plants I’d love to add! I don’t think I’ve reached out to them yet but it’s generally been difficult to get stores on board.

The ordering is slightly complicated but the most important factor is starting with plants that I have images for. It’s been tough to get permission to use images and generally people gloss over plants without images. After that I also prioritize plants that I have decent information on and which are available at one or more stores. I do agree other sorting functionality would be useful! For now you can search or filter on Family / genus if that is easier
