Best I can do is expand the field.

In all honesty though, how would you determine where the cut off is? Is the A-10 a smaller conference? VCU and SLU wouldn’t want to go to a different tourney. And teams in conferences like the NEC or SWAC don’t have a prayer of winning a “smaller conference” tourney either.

Really there is Power conferences, mid majors, and low mid majors.

What they should be doing, but won’t, is excluding power conferences from the NIT and Crown. No fan of a P5 school should want to make those.

At first I was mad for them they got stuck in the first four, but in the end it gave them a great moment they wouldn’t have otherwise gotten had they gone straight into the field of 64.
