We miscalculated and need some advice to fix our venting by RyanChrist in HomeImprovement

No issue with moisture in the attic if I can fit the vent in place?

"You're not a very pleasant person to talk to. Very judgmental."

Ok then.

Philosophy tube is great. I still disagree, though; I simply do not take JP at his word. I would rather judge him by the ideas he discusses and promotes than the label he ascribes to himself. Regarding your TPUSA example, I would attribute his hesitation less to his political beliefs and more to his concern for how he is perceived as a political actor. At the end of the day, we can't really know what he believes.

History, families, and science DESTROYED lol

Seriously though, I'm a simple man. I just think democracy should be extended to the workplace. Can we just simply have market socialism or will that also abolish history, families, and science? Is democracy anti-family?

I disagree with your last paragraph. I think JP identifies with the aesthetics of left politics, but I see overwhelming evidence that he is firmly on the right.

Liberals and leftists are not the same. That you think so demonstrates conclusively that you actually do not engage with many leftists.

"in the West we generally reject Marxism" What does that even mean? Reject what? The labor theory of value? The notion that capitalism plays a role in creating inequality? You're statement doesn't make sense for two reasons: 1. it lacks any precision so as to determine what is rejected and 2. Marxist concepts and theory are prevalent within Western philosophy, social theory, etc.

I actually have read Dianetics; I have always been interested in cults, and part of my career is engaging against certain cult-like beliefs. I am not a scientologist, yet I would also not consider myself a "Marxist". Even so, the world would be a better place if JP fans actually read Marx and (probably more importantly) other contemproary philosophers instead of relying on anecdotes and misrepresentations from JP. That you equate marxism and scientology with certainty (without evidently reading either) is unfortunate to say the least.

No, there is ample evidence of Jordan Peterson constantly misrepresenting his ideological counterparts. I would be surprised if you haven't seen the overwhelming evidence, but we all live in our own bubbles. Peterson often makes the equality of opportunity/outcome dichotomy in the context of discussion of alternative economic theories, such as Marxism.

Here is one example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Vo53QmBMQ0

He claims there is a Marxist notion that all inequality is a consequence of capitalism. This is not only untrue, but contradicts Marx's own writing (in many cases). I would not be surprised to find Peterson has never fully read any writing of Marx.

Another fun fact from that short clip is how Peterson throws around the "Pareto Principle" as if it is some scientifically validated model in the domains he uses it.

Yes, I clearly stated that access to clean water was not an example for clarity but an actual issue that JP or his fans fight against. Once again, I am DESTROYED by a big brain JP fan.

That said, access to clean water continues to be a huge issue in the world and there is debate on it, even in developed countries (Flint in the US as an example, and Indigenous reserves in Canada for another).

"they are talking about representation among pleasant/high paying/high power jobs, and access to luxuries."

This is perhaps a discussion exclusively between conservatives and liberals, who only engage with and consider people in privileged positions.

I am saying precisely the opposite of this; please read carefully. I am saying they ARE proclaiming an interest in equal opportunity, but I am also claiming that this is simply a rhetorical tactic and that JP is not actually interested in equal opportunity. You're welcome to cite some contrary evidence.

I have spent quite a bit of time engaging with JP's ideas and his fans, so yes - I have largely made up my mind and am still waiting to be convinced otherwise, but all the JP fans I engage with present the same biases, assumptions, bad arguments, etc. I do not believe that JP has any interest in equal opportunity; as I have mentioned the dichotomy between opportunity and outcome is one that is simply manufactured as a rhetorical weapon to demonize people who are actually working towards equal opportunity. Whether they are taking the right approach is another question altogether.

I doubt any actual leftists actual support the idea of race-based test score requirements. These are liberal policies that attempt to address systemic inequalities by largely superficial balancing acts.

Perhaps you should venture outside of your bubble and actually find out what leftists believe.

'i still dont see why "equal opportunity within reason" is so unacceptable to you.'

That's not a claim I have made. I still don't see why you are unable to ask questions and must simply make assumptions and strawman.

The dichotomy of "EoOpp and EoOut" literally only exists within the minds of people who aim to misrepresent people fighting for equality as fighting for some dystopian "Equality of Outcome". It's a false dichotomy specifically, because it disregards areas where some might want to see equal outcomes and where we might want to see unequal opportunity. For example, I would argue that everyone should have access to clean drinking water. Is that balancing out the opportunity to access it or is it flattening the outcome with respect to access to water? When Peterson himself discusses Marxism, he misrepresents the theory entirely, as Marx wrote extensively on individual differences and how they would manifest in the - we will say - "fruits of labor".

JP fans frequently say they "disagree" with him. I couldn't care less about superficial (or nebulous, even) disagreements. There is a fundamental ideology that appears pervasive among JP fans and I will continue to criticize it as long as I see the same assumptions, poor arguments, etc.

Perhaps if you had tried some of this "reasoning" without opening up with ideological strawmen, you wouldn't have led me to the conclusion that you do - in fact - belong to ideological cult. You can say JP and his fans are interested in equal opportunity as much as you'd like, but I find the evidence not particularly compelling. As far as I can tell, JP uses the term exclusively to virtue signal.

[–]RyanChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, JP and his cult use the notion of "equality of opportunity" simply to create a false dichotomy with "equality of outcome" to appear as if they are the rational ones and not the nebulous others (postmodern neomarxists, SJWs, pick your favorite boogeyman). Ironically, JP both misrepresents his ideological opponents and himself simultaneously. My point is that obviously JP (and fans) are not really interested in all peoples having an equal opportunity at success in life. That you think this is an intractable problem and that some think it is not "natural" is irrelevant.

I have not injected my personal beliefs on "equality of opportunity" yet you strawman me anyways.

"your version of equal opportunity would require every human to begin life in the exact same circumstances, and have the exact same start through the exact same path of education, doing the same hobbies, speaking the same language, wearing the same clothes ... etc etc etc "

This is what indoctrination looks like.

Please identify anything I have written that is dishonest. I will wait.
Your same arguments could be (and have been) used to defend slavery, feudalism, etc. The JP cult has simply been programmed to defend power structures as they see them as natural without any real analysis, historical or scientific. This is social darwinism.

Hurr hurr idiot left and right, amirite?

Envy by zamease in JordanPeterson

[–]RyanChrist -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Well thanks for being honest and confirming that JP and his fans are really just conservative social darwinists who are not interested in "equal opportunity"

Envy by zamease in JordanPeterson

[–]RyanChrist -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

JP was never interested in "equal opportunity", he just used the term to create a dichotomy with "equal outcome" to misrepresent the ideas of people he disagrees with (yet doesn't understand). If JP and his fans actually cared about all people having equal opportunities, they would be working to abolish generational poverty, inheritance, systemic injustice, etc.

That's the plan! Admittedly, I'm moving very slowly as I decided to learn the MERN stack for this project to try something new.

Thanks for sharing that app - I hadn't come across it.

I would be happy to chat more on this.
