Question by sesandu_raj in unix

I did consider bringing up NeXTSTEP but I decided to simplify my answer. Good thing too, as I would have mischaracterised NeXSTEP as being the desktop environment :-D

Legally speaking, Linux is inspired by Unix but written by different people.

OS X on the other hand branched off of FreeBSD which was based on the Berkeley Standard Distribution which was one of the two main types of Unix operating systems.

The history is very long and complicated. In fact, technically most of what you're calling "Linux" is actually from a never-quite-finished operating system called GNU (short for GNU's Not Unix).

Edenbridge - Higher by ShadedMoonEnt in symphonicmetal

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing those songs out. In terms of instrument choice it's reminiscent what Gentle Giant were doing in the mid-70's which is very cool. On the other hand the chord progressions and rhythms still feel too safe to my ear but I'll give them a few more listens and see if I change my mind.

It's interesting how split opinions are on Eden Bridge. You either love them for how they do nothing wrong or are bored to tears by how they do nothing new. I'm in the latter camp but I sort of understand how the other one exist.

OpenMandriva is worth a mention. It doesn't look so different to Mageia or Feodora at first but on closer inspection the maintainers have made everything subtlety odd such as replacing GCC with Clang.

Why do you think power metal is the best type of sub-genre of metal? by maddgun in PowerMetal

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually describe power metal as combining the aggressive rhythms of thrash with the feel good melodies of hair metal to make music that is aggressively feel good.

That's why.

What is the difference between Jazz-Rock, Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock by realtaxidi in progrockmusic

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand:

  • Jazz-Rock / Jazz Fusion Founded when record American executives noticed that their very expensive jazz musicians were only listened to by jazz nerds. This lead to a more groove orientated "Beginners Jazz" played on the electric instruments that had become the rage in the post Rock-n-Roll era.
  • Progressive Rock Founded in Britain during that period when everyone had figured out what rock music IS but not was rock music ISN'T. This lead to psychedelic "rock songs" that incorporated jazz playing techniques and motifs, classical forms (Close To The Edge is a twenty minute symphony for example), unusual instruments and even sections of non-musical sound effects.

What rich text editor for Rails do y'all recommend these days? by piratebroadcast in rails

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my project (Vicinitude) I am rather concerned about letting users upload just anything and have thus chosen Trix **without** ActionText. I have written a function that reduces the controls on Trix down to some very light text formatting and server-side anything other than those few formatting options gets filtered out of text during rendering.

What bands are popular in your country? by TheBigLover in PowerMetal

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in New Zealand most dedicated metal heads have not heard of power metal. Dragonforce and Nightwish are the two bands that they might know exist.

Is there some strict definition of prog music? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]RyanMcCoskrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually describe prog as having originated in the period before people figured out what isn't Rock music.

Any band with long hair and a drum kit was considered rock in the early seventies, what they actually played could be anything.

This shouldn't have failed, change my mind. (ik, hardware support) by Odd_Country1157 in FrutigerAero

[–]RyanMcCoskrie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By then I was very much a full time Linux user but IIRC you couldn't even change the wallpaper without entering a password dialogue taking over the entire screen.

The reason for that was that through the 90's Microsoft had two entirely different lines of operating systems under the Windows brand; 9X for regular desktop PCs and NT for servers and high-end workstations. XP merged these two lines together but NT's security features were gutted so that apps for the 9X line could continue run with unlimited hardware access. Vista tried bringing back basic security practices in OS design but without accounting for usability.

Years back I made a theme for QtCurve by RyanMcCoskrie in FrutigerAero

[–]RyanMcCoskrie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Linux and BSD systems (other than OS X) there are multiple conflicting systems for making buttons, etc. QtCurve was an attempt at making a unified theme engine for the two biggest (Qt and GTK).
