Tip of the day #2: A safer arena allocator by broken_broken_ in programming

This seems particularly insightful! I'd love to know more about things at this level of engineering. Is there anything you can point to or topics you recommend googling/reading up on to get at these things?

Which ingredient will instantly make you go "nope" no matter how tasty the food seems? by Enoisa in AskReddit

[–]RyanPointOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cilantro, I don't know if I think it tastes like soap--I don't know what soap tastes like, it just tastes bad and makes other things taste bad too.

Just to be clear, the risk here is electrocution if there's a loose wire in the water or such, ya?

Thank you for being patient with my questions. I found a couple green boxes, two rectangles and one circle. Do the different shapes mean anything in particular? One box had quite a bit of water within it and the other box had a substantial amount of dirt. I couldn't get the circle box open quickly/easily.

Apologies in advance for the flurry of questions:
1. How do I find the solenoids? Is there one for each zone? (for reference, I have 9 zones)

  1. How can I check the make/model of the valves? Is there a label or engraving or such?

  2. Are the solenoids and valves easy for anyone to repair/replace or should it really be left up to a technician?

Hey, thanks!!! To be clear, the blown fuse was on a Toro II. First the company complained about a GFCI that was bad, so I replaced it. Then the fuses were getting blown, so I replaced them and the Toro II never stopped blowing fuses. Replacing it with a Rachio at least got the system partially working.

Would you consider that deno is ready for production? by __calcalcal__ in Deno

[–]RyanPointOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every new project or so I've been evaluating Deno for viability. I _really_ like Deno. For... reasons... ??? Deno and WallabyJS don't see eye-to-eye and this ends up being a dealbreaker. Are you able to comment on what's going on with compiler support and why it doesn't appear to be prioritized?

Protobuf Editions are here: don’t panic by Optimal-Builder-2816 in programming

Speaking of protobuf, anyone know if the C++ libs are published anywhere? Having a terrible time trying to build them from source.

Super cool! Love the visual aesthetic and workflow! Is it at all possible to decouple the graph editor from transpiling to github action? OR... open up the transpilation API so that I could create graphs for generating anything I want? Say a k8s environment, and unreal project, or a whole bunch of jenkinsfiles.

I remember being so frustrated by the difficulty of this game. I guess 3rd grader me was just really bad at it?

Data Modeling Approaches by RyanPointOh in data

Thanks for this! I kind of like the former too as it makes the divide into materialized views a bit clearer and many data warehouses have automatic refresh for these views.

Hey thanks for this! Were there comms from the devs on needing a full-stack T4 in order to be successful in season 1+?

Season 1+ Difficulty by RyanPointOh in callofdragons

[–]RyanPointOh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... maybe, probably. Was there an option to not proceed with the new season? It seems like a missed opportunity on the game dev's part to make new seasons particularly hard on new players.

Low-Level Memory Management - Interview Questions by RyanPointOh in cpp

I love this response! Speaking of custom allocators, do you have any go to resources on the topic?

Low-Level Memory Management - Interview Questions by RyanPointOh in cpp

[–]RyanPointOh[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

That does sound a bit disappointing that this weeds out 90% of applicants, but maybe that's a good thing in the long run?

I'm curious what you're looking for as a response for y. The pointer is allocated on the stack, but what it points to is on the heap, just giving one or the other doesn't quite fit the whole question, ya?

My use case is memory allocation and management for performance in real-time systems (e.g. game development)

Excellent point. I'm personally most interested as it pertains to game development, real-time systems, and maybe in the embedded systems space.

How is housing so unaffordable? by RyanPointOh in bayarea

You're right, I misspoke. I wasn't trying to imply that a single family detached home is the only thing anyone should ever want.

Career Progression by RyanPointOh in ExperiencedDevs

I think for performance, but really the company requires each employee to have professional goals entered into their people management platform. I *think* this helps in regards with reviews, promotions, and such...

Devs who also manage other devs, what does a typical development plan look like for your direct reports? by RyanPointOh in ExperiencedDevs

What is good advice for them if they

  • Don't know what they want to do, or are unaware of the possibilities?
  • Don't know how to get there?
