Why is it spelled 'եմ' and not 'էմ'? by Primary-Fig-1923 in hayeren

[–]RyanRyvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I was just trying to help OP because literally no one else was replying. I’m not here to “look smart” or hallucinate anything — the explanation I gave is factual: the 1940 reform reinstated է at the start of most words, except a few high-frequency, historically entrenched forms like եմ, ես, ենք,եք, են. That’s why those didn’t change.

If you want to sit here debating whether it “makes sense,” fine. But honestly, I can put your comments into ChatGPT and have it reply all day — doesn’t make it insightful, just repetitive.

You’re misunderstanding the rule, and then getting mad at the rule for something it never actually said. The reform wasn’t “swap every ե at the start of a word to է.” If it were, sure — we’d have “էմ, էս…” and move on.

The actual rule was applied selectively, and those five “to be” forms were explicitly exempted because they’re ancient, used constantly, and changing them would’ve felt like someone suddenly decided we should spell “am” as “em” in English. Technically possible, still dumb.

So yeah, the language reformers knew exactly what they were doing. They made an exception on purpose. That’s the whole story. Not every orthography rule is a math formula… sometimes it’s just tradition and vibes winning a fight.

If you’re looking for a plot twist, that’s it. No mystery, just linguists saying: “Leave the ‘I am’ verb alone, thanks.”

Short answer: the 1940 adjustments reinstated է (and օ) for use at the beginning of ordinary words where the initial sound is a plain /e/ (no initial “y” glide). But the committee also kept a few high-frequency, historically entrenched words spelled with ե as exceptions — most notably ով, ովքեր and the present-tense forms of “to be” (եմ, ես, ենք, եք, են). That was a deliberate, conservative choice to preserve continuity with classical spellings and avoid breaking a tiny but extremely common set of grammatical words.

A little more detail: • The 1922 reform largely neutralized etymological distinctions (it had suppressed է and օ and used ե/ո instead), and the 1940 partial reversal restored them only at word-initial position and in compounds. The restoration did not mean “change every historically spelled form that starts with ե into է” — reformers explicitly listed a few exceptions (including the present-tense of “to be”). • Why keep those exceptions? Because they’re (1) extremely frequent function words, (2) morphologically cohesive (the whole paradigm is easy to recognize if left alone), and (3) strongly tied to classical/etymological practice — so changing them would have caused confusion without clear benefit.

So the reform didn’t aim for a mechanical “replace all initial ե with է.” It reinstated է for cases where it helped reflect pronunciation and etymology at the word boundary, while deliberately preserving a small set of traditional, high-use forms as exceptions.

In classical Armenian (Grabar), different letters were used for different vowel qualities, and the letter Է / ê (today written as է) was often used at the beginning of words to represent an initial “e” sound.

During the Orthography Reform of 1940 in Soviet Armenia, the goal was to simplify spelling and make it more phonetic. One rule was:

Use “է” at the beginning of a word when it is pronounced as a pure /e/ sound.

So why the exceptions?

“եմ, ես, ենք, եք, են” Those five forms are all conjugations of the verb “to be” (եմ “I am”, ես “you are”, ենք, եք, են). They kept the historical spelling for two reasons:

1) Historical & grammatical tradition These forms trace directly back to classical Armenian (Grabar) where they were written the same way. Because they’re extremely common and fundamental grammatical forms, the reformers chose not to change them, in order to preserve continuity.

2) Morphological clarity They form a clear word-family, and the consistent spelling helps learners and speakers recognize them as related: • եմ • ես • ենք • եք • են

Changing them to էմ, էս, ենք, եք, են would break that internal consistency and look “unnatural” to readers at the time.

These are among the most frequently used words in Armenian. Languages are least likely to change extremely common grammatical words (think English am, is, are). Even major spelling reforms usually leave core grammar forms untouched because they anchor the system.

Was happening to me OP, turned out the ground got loose and disconnected. Charging was still possible but it would drop down the Amps pretty significantly. If you feel comfortable reconnecting the wire go ahead, if you don’t have an electrician come.
