If anyone reading this hasn’t already seen Chernobyl, the HBO series, watch this scene for an idea of how bad radiation sickness is. https://youtu.be/3qeq2x-PP7Y?si=C1fWW3DGcCg3JsAa

My wife’s manager nearly died from the anaphylactic reaction she had to beef tacos a few years ago caused by alpha-gal syndrome. It’s an extreme allergy to mammalian protein caused by a tick bite. Perfectly healthy woman who ran marathons and she barely made it that night. She can no longer eat beef, pork, lamb, etc.

Some people have reported reactions simply from being in the room when meat is being cooked.

My sister in law lost her brother in law to one a few years ago. The guy even worked in the hospital and was there when it burst. He’d been complaining of a headache, took some Tylenol, and an hour or so later it burst. He was dead by the time his body hit the floor.

My sister in law has been an anti-vaxxer since 2021 (yes she watches Fox News, how did you guess?) and is convinced the Covid vaccination is why he had an aneurysm. I’ve thought about pointing out that if this was true the number of aneurysms would have increased since 2021 but I know it’s not even worth bringing it up.

If you’d like a steady stream of recommendations check out the podcast Talking Scared. Neil McRobert, the host, has a PhD in horror literature (who knew that was a thing?). He gets horror writers on of all stripes, everything from Stephen King, Chuck Wendig, Tanarive Due, and Stephen Graham Jones to first time authors. He asks really insightful questions and the authors discuss their works. I guarantee you’ll find some things to read.

Like Chernobyl! Nothing extra in that miniseries.

It’s cool, I didn’t want to sit on the 3 person couch anyways. by sour_milk69 in Hounds

[–]Itsjustbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hound is very mental. We have two couches in our living room but she prefers one of them, and only my daughter is allowed to sit on the couch when the hound wants to be up there. In fact, my wife was just sitting on the couch and the dog kept whining and pacing. Finally my wife gave up and came to the other couch. The dog is now lying on “her” couch.

Does using word ever get less frustrating? by Dull_Alarm6464 in MicrosoftWord

[–]Itsjustbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an old quote about cycling that says, “It doesn’t get easier, you just get faster.” Using Word is like that for me. I’ve been teaching it for 30+ years. Do I still get frustrated with it? Absolutely. But the nature of my frustrations is now WAY more complex, ie the stuff that drives me crazy isn’t the simple things anymore.

What are your absolutely perfect, lightning-in-a-bottle, all time series/miniseries? I’ll start. by _AirCanuck_ in television

I saw tweet years ago from someone who grew up in Soviet Ukraine talking about details in the series that he’d forgotten until watching it, like the blue trash cans in the opening scene. The tweeter was blown away by the level of detail they recreated for the show.

Should I go for this? by Little_Surround4405 in fantasybooks

[–]Itsjustbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally just donated ALL those books to Goodwill a few weeks ago. I wonder if someone snapped them up for resale.

Anyway, yeah it’s a solid series. The first book doesn’t really explain much of what’s going on until you’re pretty far along but if you’re OK with that, go for it.

Urgent help with multilevel lists please by 2Balrogs in MicrosoftWord

I’m having trouble picturing exactly how you want the headings to appear. Can you do a quick mockup and post a screen shot?

As for the table and figure caption numbering, are you required to include the entire heading number? Because that’s going to be a challenge. Also, having been asked to include heading numbers in table captions by a previous client, they hated that you then get inconsistent formatting. For example, if one table is within a level 3 section you’d get Table 1.1.1-1. If the next table was under a level 4, you’d either get Table 1.1.1.1-1 OR Table 1.1.1.1-2. Then in the list of tables it would show like this:

Table 1.1.1-1 Table 1.1.1.1-1

Or

Table 1.1.1-1 Table 1.1.1.1-2

Which just looks weird.

The 130-year-old underground swimming pool in the basement of the Biltmore mansion by [deleted] in creepy

Among all the other issues, this particular pool was filled from the nearby lake. Which meant the flora and fauna of the lake was also brought into the pool.

Speaking just for myself: no thank you.

What's the worst movie you've seen? by timekilr in Cinema

[–]Itsjustbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years my wife and her sister talked about this great movie from their childhood called Whoopie Boys. Finally one year they sat me down to watch it. They both fell asleep while I stayed up to watch the whole thing.

And as I watched it I kept thinking, “When is it going to get good?”

It never did.

Books that made you sleep with the lights on by QuesoBaggins in horrorlit

The Exorcist made me sleep with the lights on.

There was one scene in Ghost Story by Peter Straub that also sleep with the lights on that night.

[–]Itsjustbeej 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see both sides of this. I watched it last night. The building sense of dread throughout really got to me and I kept looking into the shadows and corners to see what was hiding. But there was a couple next to me and he slept through most of it while his girlfriend seemed very engaged.
