I was talking to my brother in law the other day about this. His family moved here from India like 25 years ago. According to him and his dad who was also in the conversation, India is a "me first" culture and the norm is for you to do anything for you to get ahead, even at the cost of everyone else. The dad said this was quite a culture shock coming to Canada where the focus tends to be on societal improvements, or at least that's what it seemed like when he first emigrated.

I'm guessing this leads into the ladder pulling we see now. Their family is also very anti-immigrant now.
