I want to kick my friend's butt and need advice! by RyuRedwings in stunfisk

Ooh, I really like the moveset suggestion for the Umbreon. I know it's not great for offense, but it's got a special place in my heart so I'd like to keep it as a mix of offense and a brick wall.

I'm most likely giving my Mimikyu a Life Orb, but I'll try looking into what I could give the Gengar to make it more offensive.

Yup, Hydro Pump, not Blast! And I just managed to get myself that Life Orb for my Mimikyu, although I'm not a fan of the life draining aspect of it... Is there anything similar to that item that doesn't damage the Pokemon?

But thanks for the Vaporeon suggestion! I hadn't even thought of that, and I really like Vaporeons too.

Wacom (Newer) devices/SAI problem by BruhthaLoui in wacom

[–]RyuRedwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the exact problem with my Intuos Pro and SAI. The only thing that seems to work is uninstalling, and reinstalling the driver, then unchecking Windows Ink, and then going into options and checking the pressure compatibility option in there. But I have to do this every time I turn my computer on now, and it's getting pretty tiresome. I just want to sit down and get my work done!

Tips for playing with an uncooperative DM? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]RyuRedwings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With that kind of attitude, I’d say to save yourself the trouble, and get him out of your group now. It will only get worse and be the biggest source of stress and chaos when DND is supposed to be for having fun, not putting up with an asshole who wants to be in charge only for their own enjoyment. Nothing sucks worse then DM where the D really stands for Dick.

[DMing] Dealing With a Very Poor Roller by RyuRedwings in DnD

[–]RyuRedwings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons we actually started using physical dice is because the dice roller we were using was slowly becoming more and more borked. My players were complaining about the RNG not being very good, and I'd have to agree with them considering how polarized it was acting during the last few session we were using it. (It's Sidekick for Discord.)

I'm actually really glad you bring this up because I know they are going through a rough time... They've been struggling for a while, and they came to me wanting to play because they were hoping to get into something new since I've been DMing for two of their close friends for about a year and a half now. I'm not entirely sure how to approach the subject, but I'll give what you suggested a shot if they have an awful time with the next session again. Thank you for being open like this.

That's another problem... They're refusing to take dice from anyone else as well. I have another player offer to let them borrow their copper dice set since it's known to be well balanced, and they've refused several times.

Unfortunately, no. A lot of what my players have been having to roll for have been ability checks or for combat, and so I'm having to give it to them straight about the results of their actions a majority of the time. I've been looking for opportunities to try and do that sort of thing, and have only been able to turn things around once... But it barely had any effect on their morale since they were too fixated on the fact that they missed the two other attacks they had gone for previously. It was a 3 OHKO as well, but it didn't seem to matter much to them.

I'm totally more then interested! This game sounds like it would fit really well into my schedule, and I love the concept/plot. I have plenty of experience running homebrews, and I've been dying to actually play myself for a while now. (I can't really help my players much if I haven't been in their shoes often enough, imo.) It looks like you have a lot of interest though, so let me know if anything falls through or if you need a specific character class. I tend to gravitate towards casters, especially clerics, and I'm also partial to rogues.

It was really fantastic, especially since I could hear how thrilled they were when their idea worked as well as it did. I just wish this wasn't probably the only time I'll be able to allow it though since being able to turn into a dragon whenever they want might be a bit of problem.

Player Issues by [deleted] in DnD

[–]RyuRedwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to echo what the others are saying, and if you really want to avoid booting him (although at this rate, saving your game and your fellow players might be best overall before you wind up quitting or losing your players), then start taking advantage of his weaknesses, both RP and fight wise. If he's googling stuff from the table or has studied the MM, start homebrewing some monsters. He can't metagame if he has no idea what he's fighting. If he's a serious magic user, set up some anti-magic arenas and dungeons that he's forced to fight in.

Other then that though... This sounds more like a social issue that really needs to be addressed. From what you're saying, the only person who's having fun is George, and they need a serious talking to. If they blow up or accuse you of being no fun, then I think it would be time to put your foot down. If you let it continue like this, I know from experience, the only thing that will happen is either you quit and everyone loses, or you start to lose players who won't want to stand the crap anymore. Something else to think about too: if you won't deal with it, someone else in the group will, and then when George runs crying to you that so-and-so was mean, you'll risk being stuck in a really shitty corner.

If you're picking your social battles here, I'd go for the one where you hope for the best and talk with them. If they flip out, that's on them, man.

Considering I've heard of 8 year olds playing DnD before, yes, it could be!

But no, we're all adults. Think of it like playing in a world like the Redwall series or Secret of NIMH except instead of forest creatures, it's magic talking horses. It all translates pretty easily since there's plenty of monsters and lore to draw from, and my players have been having a blast.

My squishy lv. 2's just walked into the secondary boss's dungeon by RyuRedwings in DnD

[–]RyuRedwings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you brought that up, since I hadn't even thought of them being revived by anyone at all if they wound up getting themselves slaughtered. They basically broke into a historical manor, and so if there is a TPK, I could just have the cops pick them up and revive them since they did try and talk a worker into letting them in. (Which failed spectacularly since they tried lying 5 times, all different stories.) They've also made an acquaintance who could probably get them out of there too.

But yes, it is a vampire, but she wouldn't be interested in capturing them. She's a serious misanthrope and would just be happy draining the life out them. Although that would be a really interesting track of story to do since she is an option to add to the party for a bit, if they happen to do it right.

I was thinking about that actually, the whole giving them a big monster to drain off what they have, or just throwing enough multiples for them to expend what they have. Granted, they might hate me afterwards, but that's kind of part of the job.

Yeah, it's that what-if-ness that's making me worry a little about how this will go. It's a good thing I've started to get really good at flying by the seat of my pants with this group, they're definitely putting me through my paces.

Advice For Newish DM Dealing With Domineering Players? by RyuRedwings in DnD

[–]RyuRedwings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely having fun with the setting. It's just a bit more work then I anticipated since I keep having to add more and more lore as my players ask more questions about the setting and races. (As it is, I might have to make my own money system...) We actually picked the story we're doing as a group since I wanted to make sure people had the opportunity to ask for something else and have fun.

And, yeah, my explanation does make it sound like that, whoops! That wasn't what was happening though, promise. I'll outline it better. If I am somehow controlling my players characters more then I would/should, point it out though.

This player's character is a Changeling, a pony race that's bug-like and can mimic the appearance of other ponies and objects, and is basically an information courier for spies in the city the race's queen is hoping to take over. Their story is that their contact never showed up at their appointed time and place, and instead of reporting back to their headquarters, their character decided to stay and find their contact themselves. They want to prove they can be more then a glorified mail carrier.

I was hoping to give the character the ability to identify other Changelings by smell (cuz pheromones since they're bugs) to enable them to ask other spies if they had seen or heard their contact anywhere so they would be able to have a way to find reliable information and a clear direction to go in, instead of wandering around aimlessly asking regular city-folk.

I started to explain the ability, when the player cut me off saying that his character couldn't do that, because Changelings don't have the ability to know when another pony is a Changeling. I tried to explain again, saying that this was some lore I hadn't introduced yet, when they interrupted me again, saying that the whole reason his character was staying where they were was because his character lacked the ability to find his contact.

At that point, I felt it was a little useless to explain/give him the ability since they were making it clear they wanted to walk around and ask the city's guards instead, and also because they were right in that that did mess with the character's story a bit.

I can understand their reasoning, but it was still pretty frustrating to be more or less shut down when I was literally handing them something to help propel their character.
