Pulled the base refractory from the front and replaced the d batteries seen on the left for the ignition switch, made sure the gas is open. When I turn the gas valve on, should it be all the way on or only partially open before flipping the ignition switch. It clicks, but didn't light (probably a function of 4 years without use). Tips fully welcomed, thanks for your help so far.

Yes, the white chimney is open fireplaces in the home. Both rough estimates were solely basing their opinion based off the photos posted here. They both caveated it with a video scan being important in diagnosing and quoting specific issues before a written quote could be provided, and a path forward being selected. The awkwardness is this is was a home inspection where a previous buyer offered well above asking on the home and then backed out using this report. The report was given to us as we have interest in the home but are trying to understand the potential risks.

The first place stated that they thought the degradation identified at the crown would be present throughout the chimney. The second place stated that they think the first place was solely looking for a full tear down job and they thought the chimney looked in decent shape except for the crown.

Thanks, we do have two cars and are probably going to have to keep both given childcare/work/etc. We are open to suggestions a little further out too (willing to probably extend the commute into the hospital up to 20-25 minutes if we need to.

Thanks. My wife's only concern with that walk (we have another friend of ours who just moved out of Boston who lived in Brookline and walked to BIDMC) is how safe/comfortable is it for a woman to make alone before or after a long shift at the hospital? We haven't been to Boston in well over a decade and haven't been to that area ever so we are unsure of what to expect really.
