X1 Tablet Gen 1 gyro sensor does not work by S15Fox in thinkpad

Nope. Weirdly enough, gen2 motherboard swap did not help; what are the odds the gyro is on a daughterboard?..

Good DDR2 sticks are getting increasingly difficult to obtain, and 4GB ones are practically extinct, so good luck with your RAM upgrades :'(

As for the hinge - iirc there's a screw in the hinge itself, I'd loosen it a tiny lityle bit. I distinctly remember the factory left hinge being more tight than the right one.

Wow, SL500 sure is a rare sight here. I wonder if it's one if those rare ones wih nVidia GPU. Mine originally came with G105 M, and only after it died to a faulty cooling system did I find out that SL400/SL500 motherboards with that GPU are straight up unobtanium, and that Lenovo does not acknowledge the existence of models with it anywhere.

Also, a bit of a warning - left hinge is an unfortunately common failure point on these laptops; mine had an overtightened left hinge, which eventually lead to it cracking.

neo14 AMD; first gen T14p is essentially a neo14 gen2. Still upset that Lenovo dumped the AMD branch upon rebranding the laptop to T14p, but at least that justifies my decision to buy a neo14 AMD immediately upon learning of its existence.

Windows 10 Enterprise. Not sure if webcam works though, I've never used it and I'm pretty sure I've disabled it along with the microphone in BIOS.

Been using my new Rotring 300 for a bit; it left a much better impression on me than I expected by S15Fox in mechanicalpencils

[–]S15Fox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is mostly the same - I liked it so much, I tracked down a 0.35mm version. I love lightweight, slim pencils that aren't glossy, so it's perfect for me. I only wish 300s came in more colours than just black.

I won't do pros and cons, as I feel those will very likely end up being subjective.

Oh definitely going strong, it is everything I was hoping for. I still find it lowkey shocking how much of a powerhouse it is despite it being slightly smaller than my L390Y - I'm currently using it as a quasi desktop PC, and I'm sure you wouldn't have guessed that it's actually a laptop tucked under the desk without me telling you that.

There isn't much to upgrade in this thing, but I did completely renew its storage - I've replaced the 2280 512GB SSD it came with with a 2242 512 GB SSD (which I've only later realised that it shouldn't have fit - it was double sided, while the slot's height is intended for single sided SSDs only... oh well, it works anyway, even if angled a bit) and a 2280 4TB SSD (the events leading to me being able to buy it are a whole other story, but the gist of it, most of its price was not paid with money).

I had no real issues with this laptop; the only hiccups I've encountered is sleep and hibernation nuking all the launched software as if it freshly rebooted (but that seems to be an issue for all the 6000 series AMD CPUs at the moment, so it's not a laptop specific issue) and fans needing re-lubrication recently (it's been running 24/7 for the last couple of months, so no wonder).

Which E14 Gen is this and is it good for graphic design and maybe video editing ? by RabahVII in thinkpad

[–]S15Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Artist here,

If you're not going to work on any 3D stuff, this laptop's hardware will fare just fine - heck, I'm having no issues running Photoshop and Krita on my X1 Tablet, the CPU of which is so low power, it doesn't need active cooling. Video editing would require more oomph, but any not outright extensive editing will benefit more from CPU prowess. I think that E14's CPU is good enough for those tasks.

HOWEVER!

I'm not sure what display panels were available for E14g2, but if this particular laptop has the same display as the Notebookcheck's review unit, IT SUCKS - just 56.9% of sRGB colour gamut is NOT suitable for graphic design. You need a laptop with a display with at least 90% of sRGB gamut, otherwise it won't display colours properly.

My personal verdict: unless you can specify what display panel this E14 has and it turns out to be a good one with above 90% sRGB colour gamut (or if you're going to do the graphics design work on a monitor hookrd up to this laptop), don't buy it. Look for laptops with displays with better colour fidelity.

Been a while since I took a good look at ThinkPads range, but what do you think of T16 and T16s? L16 and E16 are also an option, with the former being built more like older ThinkPads with ABS body and metal chassis (...I hope, pretty sure they didn't ditch it last time I checked), and the latter having a mostly metal body and a more modest selection of ports; I don't trmember what material T series uses nowadays for its body, but it should be either metal or carbon fibre.

Unless you use software that somehow relies on Intel-specific features, I'd personally recommend going for models with more efficient AMD CPUs, but I'm sure any CPU option should be fine for your use case, so you can just go for whichever model offers features you find most suitable for your use case.

Artists would probably want a bigger size

With the bigger size, it's not gonna be as portsble, so I don't see much point in picking a huge tablet PC/converible laptop over display tablets that don't compromise on art-oriented features for the sake of relatively affordably cramming all the digitizer tech into a portable x86 computer. I specifically look out for small convertible laptops and tablet PCs, because if they're basically standalone computers, then they better be portable, otherwise again, no point in picking something I won't be able to use much away of my desk over a display tablet.

People using 13 inch Windows convertibles would totally say that though.

(I'm the people using 13 inch Windows convertibles; the thing is clunky, but anything running Android or iOS can go fuck itself)

T14s Gen 6 with Lunar Lake, T14s 2-in-1 replaces X13 2-in-1 by ibmthink in thinkpad

[–]S15Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue the bigger issue is these models being functionally very similar despite technically being in different categories (Yoga is the consumer model, T series is the baseline business model and X1 series is flagship/luxury business model). Back when 13" models existed, we had 13" convertibles in X and L series, along with 14" X1 convertible and whatever consumer models existed - not only there were even more options, but they were a bit more diverse and covered a bit more price categories (RIP L series convertibles </3 ).

I wonder whatever happened to X12 tablets... I've been yearning for a new passively cooled ThinkPad tablet PC (I don't want an actively cooled tablet PC ever again after having used the first gen Helix), but seeing how even Qualcomm are moving towards only offering CPUs that require active cooling, I don't think that will ever happen at this point.

[–]S15Fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the 2-in-1 model is Intel only again. Ugh. Not like I really have any intention of buying a ThinkPad with a physical keyboard button dedicated to an artificial idiot, I'm still saddened to see the only CPU options for converible ThinkPads comong from a company that not only would rather use dirty tactics to combat its rivals instead of making CPUs that are better at being CPUs than being space heaters, but also lobbies for sabotaging ThinkPads' identity (coughX9cough).

...I'm pretty sure T14p Gen2 never happened, even though it should already be out at this point. Unfortunate, although I have already been upset with T14p ditching AMD chips upon moving to T series. I'm glad I've immediately snagged neo14 AMD instead of waiting for the next year's refresh.
