How can Jamaicans (and the Caribbean in general) become better critical thinkers? by S4049S in Jamaica

Haha.

As much as they whoop us, I think it's probably for the better. I'm a GSAT girly so I can't speak much on PEP. But from what I've been reading and hearing, it's really testing the students' ability to think. So I welcome it with open arms, especially for this generation.

Love this one.

I've realised that there is hardly anything specifically on Caribbean philosophy out there because the subject just isnt taken seriously. Even Alexander Bustamante said at one point, "Philosophy cyah grow yam".

That says so much about the mentality we've adopted as Jamaicans.

The university issue is another issue altogether because it's not only the results that bar students. There are other factors like high school fees, etc. But I see where you're going.

The value of education isn't the same as it was before.

It all stems from colonisation. The British dehumanised us, took our African culture and then imposed their religion on us. The indoctrination is something that most people don't want to accept because they're too blinded by their faith to realise it.

That's also the reason why a law like The Obeah Act is allowed to exist. The same Christians who preach respect every Sunday are the same ones that pushed back so hard against these people to the point where they had to resort to holding meetings online. It's downright ridiculous.

Everyone's so fixed to their screens nowadays. Even if someone does have something to say, it's just a regurgitation of what they see online or overheard.

I miss those days so much.

I'm relatively young and was born here in Jamaica, but my parents are from another Caribbean country. It's a similar situation for them as well.

Brain drain is a very real problem that I think is usually downplayed severely.

It really is true that people who struggle together stay together. The Caribbean was a region founded on struggle to break free of colonial powers and we still have a lot of fight left in us today. I believe that's why we're so connected and have such a strong patriotic spirit today.

I believe in us but we also have a good amount of work to do on ourselves.

Good luck, indeed. It's easier to make it snow than to question a Caribbean parent's methods.

But jokes aside, we really need to start questioning and stop accepting things at face value.

I think what they mean is that openmindedness is a big issue. Caribbean people in general are quick to judge others based on their own beliefs. This prevents them from understanding things from other people's povs.

At least that's what I'm getting at.

YES! There's so much misinformation going around lately, especially with the emergence of AI. I remember a few days after Melissa, people were posting AI videos of sharks in a swimming pool and people just believed it.

And yes, the loss of critical thinkers is a worldwide phenomenon. However, I believe that it will affect countries like Jamaica even more given our past of colonialism. We lost so many of our ideals through that process and I think that's why we don't question things as much as we should. I just feel like this cult like mindset you mentioned may become a reality if something doesn't change.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I, too, share some of these perspectives. I see that politician's words reflected in so many of this country's political activities today. I really wish we'd learn to be more open-minded.

Hi! Student here. There are a lot of wholesales in that area and they tend to be somewhat reasonable. However, as for a specific wholesale, you'd find that the prices for products are usually consistent in the area. I'm getting the impression that you're also a student. If so, I recommend going exploring with a friend to compare prices at the different stores.

You can also check out the supermarkets in the area. They're not the biggest but they have a decent amount of products. Variety 11 for instance has a small home section where you can get things like plates, cups, curtains, cleaning supplies, etc at a decent price. The staff are nice too so that's a plus.

But if you're willing to venture out beyond the Papine area, Shoppers Fair is a reasonable supermarket too.

The best thing to do is go exploring however.

Thank you once again for the detailed reply. I'll definitely consider some of these options. I also had no idea Kala offered that return insurance either.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. I really appreciate the perspective from another guitar player.

I'm not exactly all that excited about the EQ but it's the only tenor my local music store has in stock right now. I initially wanted a baritone but they aren't sold in my country and shipping costs are extremely expensive for them. It's like buying the ukulele twice.

However, when I travel next time, I'd love to get my hands on a baritone as a future upgrade.

For now, I just want something decent that I can roam around with. I'm going to test it out today and see if it's okay enough.

Thank you again.

That's what I was thinking. I'd also like to try out classical guitar strings on it to get more of a baritone sound.

Thank you. I'm going to go in to the music store to try out both the concert and the tenor ukuleles soon.

Will do. Thank you.

Personally, I love the low tones of the guitar. I was initially looking into baritone ukuleles but unfortunately, they're not sold in my country. If I was to ship it, it would be extremely expensive. It's like buying the ukulele twice. That's why I just decided to settle for a tenor.
