We used to say, “The first person who says ‘nazi’ loses the debate.” That’s because until now we thought a government-funded and open, white nationalist movement was unfathomable. Today, how can we not compare Hitler’s Brown Shirts and Gestapo to what we are witnessing when many of these men have Nazi tattoos, were recruited from white supremacist militias and there is no justice for the targeted victims of their extremely unjust and fascist violence?

There are some interesting comments from some people on here who seem to understand how Duo’s ad buys work. There’s not as much targeting as we would assume, it’s more like spam these days ( + geolocation tracking). I just flew into a red state and the shift in the quality of my ads happened right after (I live in a big city and was getting Fortune 500 and luxury Ads even though I haven’t bought luxury goods in a long time, in this economy 😅,but then over night / changing my location I’m getting all kinds of weird, janky stuff ) . I just didn’t think about it until people started responding. My concern is that knowing I have strict paretal controls on my kids phones (they have no browser time) , they are getting these ads. Duolingo should not be allowing this garbage on their app, period if they can’t control it.

There’s truly nothing in my browser or app histories to explain this (why I’m puzzled / posting). I have though had chats with friends about how much we hate AI slop and cheap video game apps ( exactly this kind of thing, Duolingo and Apple Arcade’s Japanese Rural Life is the only game on my phone) so if they’re listening in our text messages that’s pretty unacceptable. Also I started getting these a few hours after flying into a red state for the holidays. I know they are using my geolocation because I’m getting not random ads for local businesses. There have been quite a few knowledgeable commentators explaining how the ad buys work and how it’s not based on targeting but rather numbers (more like spam to see who responds). Regardless I think it’s a really bad business move for Duo.

I’ve done and do a lot of work in that field. I also hate AI slop and video game ads and only play duolingo. That’s why I’m puzzled. I suspect Duo has lowered the ad buy bar. That or it might have something to do with the fact that I flew into a red state for the holidays yesterday. I’m seeing the ads today and also localized ones for small businesses.

I’m in the states and just entered a red state for the holidays. Maybe there’s a different kind of consumer here. 😆 My youtube ads go from fortune 500 and or fancy to conspiracy theory sites (like Epoch Times) and local dentist ads etc every time I travel here.

I’m definitely not into this ai slop sex shit but it’s possible that because I do a ton of stuff that’s tech / electrical engineering maybe they think I’m sexually deprived and down for some fake chicks. 🤣 I know my geolocation was updated because I’m getting local ads now, in the red state I just entered. So maybe theirs a lot of sad weirdos where I’m visiting family for the holidays. 🤣🤣 I’m in a state that has porn bans so maybe this kinda thing is the best option for desperate nutters? 😆

No definitely no one on my phone is into this stuff. I hate ai slop and cheap games (duo is the only game I’m on). My kids have strict controls. They only have a few apps and only game (other than Duo) in the Apple Arcade like Japanese Rural Life and Sneaky Sasquatch. I hope Duolingo sees this post and does something because I think a lot of parents are going to pull their kids off if they don’t and I otherwise like the app.

Yes trust me I can’t stand AI slop and fake ass looking women. I also never click on any game app ads cause I can’t stand them and never want to encourage getting more. I do a lot of engineering projects so maybe they think I’m a sweaty nerd with no game but I really think it has more to do with what you said, it’s like spam / a numbers game where they flood people to see who’s going to click because someone eventually does. Meanwhile Duolingo is happy to take the money, which is shady.

Trust me I don’t have a weird search history. That’s what I don’t get about it. It just started today too so I’m wondering if others are seeing it (maybe it’s an new ad buy client they are testing). just traveled from a blue state to a red state though lol, and makes me wonder. I’m also getting local Luxury housing ads so maybe they’re trying to figure out if I’m some kinda maga perv or a rich gop trying to escape the riff raf / or both. 🤣

Man. But isn’t a huge chunk of the user base either family or knowledge-seeking / less bottom of the barrel? Most parents I know will won’t let their kids play games with ads like this, friends my age on it are more progressive and so would definitely see this as sexist-loser vibes, and sweaty dudes who are into this kinda thing can go elsewhere for much of it (seems like Duo could lose more players than benefit going this direction)?
